Hi,
Trying to think of the industries and companies that are taking the most hit right now, so we can ensure to support afterwards. Trying to give dd an idea of how much this actually affects.

Family businesses

  • theme parks
  • Trains

What else would be really struggling right now and losing money?

It can be anything from holiday resorts, to parks, amusement parks, public transport, family businesses

e1 loads of demand for delivery drivers I think taxi drivers should apply

Womencanlift · 19/03/2020 04:33

Not only airline staff but airport staff - check in, baggage handlers, those who work in the shops/bars etc

Those that work in gyms

Basically if you are in a job where you can’t work from home then you are in trouble. This is why it makes me laugh when you here the government say oh just work from home it will be fine. The vast majority of those in low paid jobs, who will suffer most from this, cannot wfh.

I am in a really privileged position in that I can wfh but across my family most can’t as they are in travel and hospitality and it is very very scary right now

My Dads a black cabbie, 4 jobs in 30 hours...

Mimishimi · 19/03/2020 05:09

Im in hair and makeup. 90% of my clients in the next few weeks have cancelled as the events they were attending (weddings, conferences, awards etc) have all been cancelled. The only ones remaining were having photoshoots (so no large gatherings)

It's pretty crap. SOOO glad we didn't buy a new home last year.

Empra123 · 19/03/2020 05:18

Music and theatre. One of my clients described it as gig armageddon yesterday

berryfull · 19/03/2020 05:36

Artists and musicians . Self employed and completely fucked

roundtable · 19/03/2020 05:39

Events and exhibitions

Everything has stopped. Most people involved out of work.

Heatherjayne1972 · 19/03/2020 05:49

At some point Dentists are only going to do emergency work
So that affects hygienists therapists technicians and the support staff dental nurses receptionists cleaners

In fact any business which relies on people coming through the doors and anyone who can’t work from home is going to struggle

BillThePony · 19/03/2020 05:49

TV and Broadcasting has taken a massive hit. Lots of camera operators etc with no work right now

Wiaa · 19/03/2020 05:53

I started my own business in December employing 1 member of staff we're a fire and electrical maintenance company mainly business to business all clients have cancelled non essential work. So my employee has nothing to do and as we're so new we've barely started to receive payments from invoices so no back up cash. The government are talking about assisting the obvious industries but almost all industries will be affected that aren't essential food/medicine. The list is endless: hairdresser, dog walker, cleaner, manufacturing, textiles, car sales, estate agents, skip hire, ice cream van, car hire and so on

Mimishimi · 19/03/2020 05:57

Making it the ripe time for a certain type to say 'it's all the fault of immigrants, X group, Y group) and , ta da, WW2 and extermination camps all over again.

It's like a nightmare I can't wake up from.

ivykaty44 · 19/03/2020 06:01

Someone up thread said bakery, my local bakery is still selling out of food each day, online orders available. They shut there tiny inside part but are delivering to people that need bread

Mimishimi · 19/03/2020 06:06

The ones who pretend they are businessmen but in reality make a living off theft and genocide.

LallaLand · 19/03/2020 06:09

I work in aviation and I'd say we are worst hit but I'm biased!

SuperMeerkat · 19/03/2020 06:14

Gyms. I called to cancel as i’ve been told to self isolate for up to 3 months. The woman on the phone was very sweet but sounded very sad that everyone was cancelling and said they’re might not be a gym to come back to soon. Got a similar and much longer email from the gym’s managing director basically begging me to stay. I haven’t responded yet 😥 I feel so awful that these businesses are potentially going to be lost but I shouldn’t have to prop them up. Pay as you go gym’s are a risky business model sadly.

SuperMeerkat · 19/03/2020 06:26

@e1y1 It’ll be because the taxis aren’t refrigerated i’d have thought 😓

LakieLady · 19/03/2020 06:32

DMum said she doesn't get why supermarkets aren't approaching taxi drivers to do home grocery deliveries considering in some places there is no available slots for 6 weeks

A friend who is self-isolating couldn't get a delivery slot, so she did click and collect and got a taxi firm to pick up her shopping and deliver it. She paid for the taxi over the phone when she booked it, and the driver left her shopping at the bottom of her drive for her to collect.

I bet most taxi firms would be happy to do this when there's so little work around.

PianoTuner567 · 19/03/2020 06:32

So many knock-ons. The car park at my commuter train station was practically empty yesterday and usually you can’t get a space. Their takings must suddenly be down 90% at least.

It will all come back once this is over though. It’s just how to get through it.

Witchend · 19/03/2020 06:48

I work at a church/community centre.
On Monday and Tuesday this week I saw our bookings go down from 40+ a week to almost nothing.
I can't implement the cancellation policy overall as a lot of these bookings will then go under-often charities and good works.
We have no income. We have switched the heating off and lights on minimum.

We have spent this week turning the church into a support hub. We will get no money from the government For this, nor will we charge.

We've already been dealing with cases like a lady in her80s who can't get her insulin, a mother whose baby has severe allergies and can not get the milk. People who have seen their business go under in a week.
It is going to get worse. Please donate what you can to your local support hub. (make sure it's legitimate tbough) Items, time and money.

We have a wonderful bunch of volunteers here that are working round the clock to help.

Please keep yourself safe. This is a huge crisis and is not going to go away quickly. 4 months is a conservative estimate. We are preparing for 18 months or more.

StillDisappointed · 19/03/2020 06:52

@LakieLady That's great for Taxi Firms; not so much for people like my dad who have to drive around London and wait for a hand to go up.

Again, zero support for him and others in his position.

Phrowzunn · 19/03/2020 07:06

Oil and gas industry - barrel price has halved in month. There are going to have to be redundancies. They were only just starting to recover from the last crash.

MarshaBradyo · 19/03/2020 07:08

Piano and music teachers and paid for outside school activities

ooooohbetty · 19/03/2020 07:10

Taxi businesses round here are laying staff off. A lot of their daytime trade is old people who are now not going out. Schools closing means they won't have the school contracts. Lots will go bankrupt.

Hoppinggreen · 19/03/2020 07:12

I’m a Relocation Agent
I help people being moved to The UK by their employers find homes, schools etc.
Brexit caused a downturn so I was supplementing it by working with a company that linked Businesses and schools
Guess how that’s going?

Bellossom · 19/03/2020 07:16

I've worked in a cinema 9 years and no idea what's happening to my job from Friday.

Have been told we'll get paid for the shifts we've already worked at least Hmm
