Hi,
Trying to think of the industries and companies that are taking the most hit right now, so we can ensure to support afterwards. Trying to give dd an idea of how much this actually affects.

Family businesses

  • theme parks
  • Trains

What else would be really struggling right now and losing money?

It can be anything from holiday resorts, to parks, amusement parks, public transport, family businesses

My partner and I run a small building company. The work will dry up for us in the foreseeable future, and I believe the way the economy is going, our type of construction will take a while to get going again. Very worrying times for us as this business is our sole income as a family of four.

Peccary · 18/03/2020 23:19

In terms of people I know:

Pet sitter
AV tech (no events happening)
Caterer

Nearly every Salon/beautician/barber round here has closed. It's so sad for them as they just have no idea if they'll ever be able to open again as rent etc still needs paid while they're not earning.

I think the pubs/restaurants/theatres might fare a bit better due to larger amounts of people returning as soon as they open their doors.

MorganKitten · 18/03/2020 23:25

After school club staff

PickAChew · 18/03/2020 23:30

Whether this is 3 weeks (unlikely) 3 months or 3 years, all attempts to get high streets to pull themselves up by their bootstraps have now been well and truly scuppered. I can't even joke about everything being turned into student accommodation, as is the recent trend, because I can see a few universities becoming unviable if they can't start new year in September.

I think Stockton has the right idea, wanting to demolish an ugly concrete shopping centre to turn it into park land, right in the town centre. (I won't be sad if the wanker run George pub, overlooking it, goes bust, mind).

blueshoes · 18/03/2020 23:34

Mass closure of schools, museums, pubs and offices will have a knock on effect on the suppliers to those entities, including catering and cleaning.

Counciltennantontheedge · 18/03/2020 23:34

@SeaGale actually we are using taxis rather than public transport now. One man is a lot less scary than loads of randomers. I thought taxis would be used more now- until lockdown that is

WatchingTheBears · 18/03/2020 23:35

My friend is a wedding photographer. All of her bookings cancelled in one day

Tonyaster · 18/03/2020 23:37

We have a family manufacturing business.

Noone will learn anything from this. It's nice that people think things will change, but this time next year everyone will be back to buying cheap shit made in China from the supermarket.

Pjsandbaileys · 18/03/2020 23:40

Basically everyone who isn't food manufacturing or online retailer, even then the reductions in income will hit them devastating for everybody.

contentedsoul · 18/03/2020 23:40

Just had new worktop and sink fitted - old one had been in 18yrs
Fitter called back today - prior to the outbreak he had 5 months solid work. In less than 1 week he’s down to 1 month and expects that to go too.
Had we forseen this coming we wouldn’t have replaced the worktop.

Aurora2020 · 18/03/2020 23:41

Salons

TheFlis12345 · 18/03/2020 23:45

Everyone I know in marketing and advertising is scared, and I know a few whose companies are already making redundancies as all future projects have been indefinitely postponed.

Titsywoo · 18/03/2020 23:47

Hotels, restaurants, bars, cinemas. So many. My parents own a hotel. They've worked so hard for 15 years and are ready to sell and retire. I'm so worried for them and their staff :(

Clevererthanyou · 18/03/2020 23:47

I work for a very very small local company that provides cleaners to the vulnerable and elderly as part of a package of care and we’ve had a day full of cancellations. Don’t know if we’ll come back from this.

Redcherries · 18/03/2020 23:57

Tradesmen, construction, plumbers, Electricians etc.

I know people are supporting hospitality, hairdressers etc as much as possible as am I but there are many industries that can’t work from home that will suffer. There’s also a huge risk of not being paid for projects completed due to clients shutting down, bear in mind one project can be tens of thousands of pounds.

Icare1234 · 18/03/2020 23:59

Any service that isn’t absolutely essential as well as hospitality, retail, travel, cleaners unless for hospitals/supermarkets, manufacturers eg cars/dishwashers and their suppliers. I wonder if some farmers will struggle- prices for produce will go up, but might be limited because we won’t have the cash to buy. The add on businesses such as farm shops/caravans will have closed.

happinessischocolate · 18/03/2020 23:59

I think it would be easier to list the jobs/businesses which will not be affected.

OLP2019 · 19/03/2020 00:03

Conference and event production !

Crunchymum · 19/03/2020 00:05

@Counciltennantontheedge

Where are you going in all these taxis? Given we aren't really supposed to be going anywhere?

user1464279374 · 19/03/2020 00:06

Most people in the arts are screwed. All freelancers whose jobs have now disappeared for the next few months, and little alternatives for making money.

Knowhowufeel2 · 19/03/2020 00:09

Construction, engineering (structural and civil), both most likely due to building projects/sites being cancelled or shut down.

Pubs, cafes, restaurants, travel firms, most self employed. Etc.
The supposed help is nowhere near enough.

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 19/03/2020 00:09

All of them, apart from utilities, pharma, food, and the likes of Netflix.

Practically everything depends on people in a country where you don't really do a lot of manufacturing. Worst hit is events, hospitality, and all the allied suppliers/freelancers.

Knowhowufeel2 · 19/03/2020 00:10

It's obviously not possible to work from home in these industries.

Penguin34 · 19/03/2020 00:11

I'm a beautician.
I don't know how I'll cope on £70 a week.
I'm not sure if I'll have to pay the rent on my beauty room (likely I will or will ah e to pay half) if we are on lock down but I won't get any help from the government.
On Tuesday I woke up to 12 cancellations for this week.
I'm still working till I can't anymore and I've put lots and lots of new measures in place.
I'm not going to lie I'm absolutely shitting it.
Even when we come out the other side I won't be going back to the thriving business I now have.
I feel so anxious and depressed
