Being overweight is a underlying condition

I had totally missed this.

If you have a BMI above 40 then you are considered to be at high risk and should self isolate for 12 weeks.

Anyone know why?

That's the thing, when you dig deeper it's possible to argue that many health conditions are ultimately to do with personal choices, so we have to draw the line at some point but where?

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/03/2020 14:19

@ Lily193 - the original post mentioned type 1 diabetes.

cavabiensepasser · 18/03/2020 14:20

The whataboutism is worrying. Obesity kills. So do other things, but the fact remains that obesity kills. If you want yourself killed, it's up to you. Nobody can force you to take precautions or make changes to your lifestyle. But the fact is still that obesity kills, and gives no shit about your feelings.

Many people have made a 'feature' out of being fat... it's their thing, their superpower, they are a BBW etc
but we are plunged into this crisis and there is now no mileage whatsoever to be made out of being obese

itsmorethanthat · 18/03/2020 14:24

I haven’t read the full thread but just for clarity, people with a BMI of 40+ don’t have to self isolate for 12 weeks. They are however advised to be particularly stringent with the social distancing measures.

Hope that helps.

Yup. Personally I view the FA/HAES movement as a suicide cult, but what can you do.

@DentalPatient I just want to say that I am not ignorant about the reasons people overeat (or have other eating disorders or mental health issues). Trust me on that one. But there are lots of steps people can take to improve their mental and physical health. For a minority of people these steps may be difficult to take for various reasons and they have my sympathy.

But for the majority of obese people, they just don’t want to/can’t be bothered to take the steps to improve their health (physical/mental).

No different to non-obese people who smoke or drink too much or don’t do enough exercise. We all prioritise things. And if you don’t prioritise your physical and mental health then clearly you will be at most risk when illness strikes, whether Coronavirus or other.

People must accept their actions and own their stuff.

Wildthyme · 18/03/2020 14:30

Anticoagulants don't cause weight gain ffs.

alloutoffucks · 18/03/2020 14:31

There is a lot of fat hatred. Criticise people just for trying to gain some self esteem in a world that treats them like shit.

And of course being fat for your health. You are not telling us anything new with your faux concern. Just sticking the boot into the fatties.

Duchessofblandings · 18/03/2020 14:32

Someone mentioned fat shaming. It isn’t, just medical fact unfortunately.

DentalPatient · 18/03/2020 14:32

909090Gertrude I would be interested to read the evidence behind your statement that for the majority of obese people, they just don’t want to/can’t be bothered to take the steps to improve their health.

managedmis · 18/03/2020 14:33

Not really news. If you're morbidly obese then yes, you are more susceptible to illness.

alloutoffucks · 18/03/2020 14:33

@909090Gertrude Why are you so sure they can't be bothered?

otterturk · 18/03/2020 14:34

If you have a BMI over 40, I would suggest Corona Virus is the least of your problems.

alloutoffucks · 18/03/2020 14:34

@DentalPatient There is no evidence. The evidence says the opposite. But the stereotype of fat equals lazy and thick is alive and kicking.

alloutoffucks · 18/03/2020 14:35

@otterturk Does that make you feel better?

ViciousJackdaw · 18/03/2020 14:36

And of course being fat for your health. You are not telling us anything new with your faux concern. Just sticking the boot into the fatties

So if people already know that a BMI over 40 is a serious health risk, why are they so surprised to hear that it's an underlying condition for CV?

alloutoffucks · 18/03/2020 14:37

@Duchessofblandings Of course being fat is bad for your health. Fat people are not stupid. But there is a lot of shitty comments on this thread about fat people. Sure middle class people say their shitty comments in "nice" articulate ways rather than oi you fat cunt, but they are all coming from the same place.

otterturk · 18/03/2020 14:39

@alloutoffucks it's a statement of fact. If you are morbidly obese your body is at huge risk of a massive range of serious health conditions. Not sure what your comment is about.

cavabiensepasser · 18/03/2020 14:39

faux concern - check
fatshaming - check

got my fatlogic bingo card ready.

alloutoffucks · 18/03/2020 14:39

@ViciousJackdaw I assume because some people know being fat is bad for cardiac health and cancer risks, but do not understand why it is bad for you with a virus. Is that really so hard to understand?

MichaelMumsnet · 18/03/2020 14:40

Just dropping by to ask for a little peace and love on this thread.

Duchessofblandings · 18/03/2020 14:42

I know. Two of the people I love most are morbidly obese/obese and poor health is/will be just a fact of their lives if they continue to be. Serious, sudden illness will only compound that, hence the classification of vulnerable. Not discrimination or judgement, sad fact.
I couldn’t love them more, fat or thin.

alloutoffucks · 18/03/2020 14:43

@otterturk And that is news to any fat people do you think?
Do you also go up to people that smoke and tell them that could give them lung cancer?

Anyone who is fat knows it is bad for your health. We get told it ALL the time. It is NOT news.
So please don't patronise fat people. Or tell them that they are fat just because they are lazy and thick - look at the research, it is invariably more complex than that. Just as alcoholics are not just alcoholics because they like the taste of alcohol too much and are too thick to stop drinking.
