Being overweight is a underlying condition

I had totally missed this.

If you have a BMI above 40 then you are considered to be at high risk and should self isolate for 12 weeks.

Anyone know why?

@GrumpyHoonMain Yes I do love that my 72 year old mother thinks that inspite of sustained AF, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a fairly recent hospital stay, she is "not high risk". She's also a size 18...

UYScuti · 18/03/2020 12:35

We've gone from 'body positivity' and 'no fat shaming please' to
'you're fat, go to back of the queue for the respirator, no ifs no buts' 😳

PeterPanGoesWrong · 18/03/2020 12:36

Think about it, if you’re obese, your lungs have less space to work properly but have to work a lot harder than someone who’s not carrying and extra 6 stone. you’re much more vulnerable.

DowntonCrabby · 18/03/2020 12:36

A lot of people might be encouraged to sort their shit out and take more responsibility for their health. Me included!

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/03/2020 12:37

@DentalPatient yes it can. That was how my DF’s condition was diagnosed.

I mean "luckily" I'm already practicing social distancing because of DS, he's almost 4 months and I don't want to take any chances. But I have no health conditions associated with my weight. My heart rate is normal and was the whole time I was pregnant. I have no issues with breathing and I'm starting to get back into shape after having PGP during my pregnancy. I don't know my BMI but I'd say it's probably over 40. It's really reassuring to hear that my family could be left without me because of my weight. That doesn't make me feel like a piece of shit at all.

GrumpyHoonMain · 18/03/2020 12:41

Nobody should receive that kind of encouragement with a refusal to be treated because their BMI means a lesser chance of recovery than someone else. Unfortunately that is where we may head in an Italy type scenario.

Bluntness100 · 18/03/2020 12:46

It’s clearly due to the strain people’s respiratory systems are already under due to being severely over weight. Think of someone seriously over weight and how easily they can get out of breath. It’s really to try to protect these people.

DentalPatient · 18/03/2020 12:47

Grumpy the link you post to talks about the pulse quivering, feeling irregular and different beats have different strength.
By your reckoning a fit person with a low resting pulse who goes for a run and whose pulse therefore raises significantly could be diagnosed with AF.

Iggly · 18/03/2020 12:49

Please don’t say shit like this without a link to evidence please.

Sorry, ignore me, I don’t think it says 12 weeks anywhere on that link. I’ve asked for my post to be removed.

I do think it will be a good thing though if this gives morbidly obese people a wake up call.

Jaxhog · 18/03/2020 12:55

40 bmi is morbidly obese. The clue is in the name.

At that level, many (not all) people's breathing will be compromised if they get a respiratory virus. I was surprised not to see hypertension on the list, as reports suggest this is a major risk factor.

ViciousJackdaw · 18/03/2020 12:55

Did you not realise that your BMI was seriously compromising your health anyway? Your family could be left without you because of your weight without coronavirus. Sorry to be harsh but I'm quite surprised at the number of people who don't seem to know that. That's science.

Iggly · 18/03/2020 12:55

Thank you - it says social distancing not self isolating?

Jerseygaly · 18/03/2020 12:55

It's not that surprising as if this gives a difficulty breathing so putting more stress on other organs, that will be worse if you effectively have a small child on your chest.
I'm sat here drinking slim fast.
I weight just over 10st 5'4 but have underlying health things asthma/pcos/thyroid so am concerned already. Pics means my blood sugar isn't under control.
I think it's a difficult situation I wouldn't want to be a Dr trying to decide between
A very overweight person
A smoker
An asthmatic
A t1 diabetic.
Obviously they will have to decide on who will recover more easily. But the asthmatic /t1 diabetic would rightly feel miffed at being left to die for something they haven't caused.

tiktok · 18/03/2020 12:56

makingmiracles - eh? But all those women will have different BMIs. All you have done is show that weight is a crude measurement.

alloutoffucks · 18/03/2020 12:56

I have no idea what my BMI is. But if 11 stone can put you in this at risk category then I am probably in it. I would have had no idea.

909090Gertrude · 18/03/2020 12:58

Yes, @Iggly it’s social distancing not self isolation. Here’s the link again for reference, in case they delete the post above.

Youhedge · 18/03/2020 12:58

@Iggly that was easy enough.

being seriously overweight (a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or above)

BMI of 40 is SERIOUSLY overweight

Her0utdoors · 18/03/2020 13:00

I'd wondered that and assumed it was on the list of underlying conditions. My bmi is 'only' 31 at the moment, but Ive lost a stone this year and plan in keeping it up.

cavabiensepasser · 18/03/2020 13:01

It's really reassuring to hear that my family could be left without me because of my weight. That doesn't make me feel like a piece of shit at all

Uhh. If you are mordibly obese you're more likely to die prematurely Anyway. It's the truth and it's not supposed to make you feel good. Excess weight can actually kill you. Think of the strain on your heart, liver, and lungs. Your joints. The general level of inflammation in your body.

Perhaps the effects of morbid obesity haven't caught up with you YET, but they will, sooner or later. That's not a moral judgement, that's a fact. A fact is the most stubborn thing in the world and no amount of bodyposi memes and soundbites can change it.

Onemorehitandillcrumble · 18/03/2020 13:02

Let’s not be too rude here, BMI is a crude tool for weight

No it really isn’t. It’s not about weight or how you look in your bikini it’s a health RISK indicator.

Being overweight is a underlying condition
DentalPatient · 18/03/2020 13:03

Jerseygaly, are your seriously saying everyone with a bmi over 40 has caused that themselves?
