Live in London- must be 7 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive of me, I went to 3 today- no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread- on top of no cleaning products.
What exactly are we supposed to do? I haven’t seen a restocked supermarket in weeks.
FYI I consider all preppers scum!

If your supermarket has stock, Where are you? What time are you turning up to shop?

Oh god the waste 😱

Grin

Ds2 had braces fitted in November 2018, he was told not to eat chewy stuff and as he is very literal he did exactly what he was told

The braces may be removed circa November 2020...and all he wants when that happens is a pack of skittles Grin

Slurpy · 18/03/2020 21:19

Rufus - the braces wearers in class were feeling very smug! The rest were up for eating them (I did not allow this!). Wish I'd bought a pack for myself now...

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 18/03/2020 21:21

The rest were up for eating them

We once used mini smarties as money for a card game

It was a really bad idea

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 18/03/2020 21:23

I think it's not even actually panic buying - anyone in a high risk group needs to stock up for 4 months so that they can self isolate. They're just following advice.

Knowhowufeel2 · 18/03/2020 23:35

I've been hoarding prepping since forever. SmileWink

I love a bargain/offers and can never resist stocking up on them when I see them.

My health isn't great so I've always kept several months worth of everything in and when I use one, I simply buy another one to take its place on my next shop.

I've always bought heavy/bulky and hygiene items in bulk (online), so I don't have to think about them more than once or twice a year.

I've also only been shopping for the last few weeks for fresh veg, fresh milk and sea salt, so I'm not contributing to empty shelves.

I've also been shopping for elderly relatives and friends, and again have just been trying to do their normal weekly shop for them, and when I've been unable to find their items (eg, toilet roll, tinned tomatoes) I've supplemented/ topped up their shop with items from my own cupboards.

I was in Basingstoke today (~11am-12 noon) and their Asda had plenty of wipes, nappies, baby milk, etc, but were out of eggs, bread, and toilet paper. They had some pasta and tins left though.

Yesterday (early evening) I was in Medway and their Morrisons was completely out of everything; no crackers, no fruit, no veg, no meat, no pasta, etc, etc.
I only went in for a sandwich, and was gobsmacked by it so I looked around, as it was like scenes from an apocalypse movie.

Their Tesco wasn't much better and didn't have the cream crackers I wanted and even the Poundland was out of toilet paper, hand gel, and pasta/rice. They did have ibuprofen though, but no sea salt, which is what I'd gone in for.

I've found the supermarkets in London to be fairly well stocked though. I tend to visit them around lunchtime or late afternoon.

Hopefully people will calm down soon and things can get back to normal.

ChillinInMyBacta · 19/03/2020 00:07

Just be thankful you aren't in the US where guns and ammunition are selling out - now that's panic buying.

userxx · 19/03/2020 06:27

@ChillinInMyBacta fair point! That is terrifying.

wondering7777 · 19/03/2020 06:33

Things will calm down.

When? There doesn’t seem to be any sign of it yet Sad

DennisReynoldsDuster · 19/03/2020 06:55

It’s because I prepped I could afford to take my 90 year old neighbour a shop last week and will be able to top her up with loo roll and tins and UHT if need be.
I haven’t been to the supermarket in two weeks. I’ve stayed away knowing that anything I don’t have at the moment I can do without and others need it more.
I’ve donated some baby formula on a community group. Same with nappies. Even though I didn’t have loads.
I intend to do the same with some baby food jars that were mistakenly picked up for me by a kind hearted relative.
Explain to me what part of my behaviour is scum and adding to your problem? I’m really sorry you’re struggling OP and hope the supermarkets get back on top of things soon

TravelDreamLife · 19/03/2020 07:00

Come to Australia... Where you'll get physically assaulted for a bog roll (that's made locally).....

Our PM called out panic shoppers in a blunt 'stop it, it's ridiculous' speech. Supermarket chains are showing pictures of full warehouses, local govt is relaxing curfews on trucks so they can restock 24/7. Nothing works. I'm actually afraid to go tomorrow.

As my DH says about panickers - 'you can't cure stupid'.

Menora · 19/03/2020 07:08

Everything I have in my Tesco basket on my order for Tuesday has been removed. So on Tuesday the shop I had booked will arrive with virtually nothing on it. It was only about £50 worth anyway
I tried going to store and they had no food in my local so I am unsure what I am going to do!

Rosehip10 · 19/03/2020 07:11

My local large sainsburys in SW london may as well close by evening. At 19.30 last unit. All food shelves were literally bare.

userxx · 19/03/2020 07:12

@TravelDreamLife Stupidity seems to be spreading faster than the virus! It's embarrassing.

userxx · 19/03/2020 07:16

hope the supermarkets get back on top of things soon

They are on top of it but they can't control the idiots who are panic buying.

Theodoreb · 19/03/2020 12:56

Asda have imposed a 3 item limit online hopefully it's in store too as this will slow panic buyers down and hopefully give chance to re stock.

jessicay · 19/03/2020 13:13

Check your local cash and carry.

VivaLeBeaver · 19/03/2020 13:28

I can see my local One Stop from my house and saw a delivery lorry pull up and start offloading cages of stuff.

I was on the phone chatting to a colleague and mentioned after the call I was going to go to the shop and see if there was loo roll. Chatted a few more minutes and then noticed cars pulling up at speed and people running in.

I ended the call and went round (2 doors away) and by the time I got there all the 9 roll packs of Andrex had gone but there were a few 4 packs of cheap stuff left. I got one. Some people apparently had been getting 3 packs. Guess they could have big families though.

Wannabangbang · 19/03/2020 13:33

Loads of fruit in my local tesco
Milk too
No loo roll
No dettel
No meat, any flipping meat
No potatoes
No eggs
There was a few loaves if brown bread
No frozen meat
No frozen vege

Hoarders if you are reading this, selfish, selfish, selfish hope you get looted

Alsohuman · 19/03/2020 14:18

In a couple of weeks I reckon there will be loads of food going in the bin. People are so fucking stupid.

adiposegirl2 · 19/03/2020 15:51

So this is my theory-
supermarkets supply chain cannot cope with demand of some lines that's why they have all imposed rationing as a way to buy them time to replenish their supply chain.

Dettol anti bacterial spray for example. Methinks the manufacturers cant source ingredients.

Fresh meat stocks I dont think the slaughter houses can just kill animals to order. I'm sure someone on here knows the procedure better than I.

NeckPainChairSearch · 19/03/2020 16:09

I'm not a vegetarian, but buying meat hasn't even occurred to me. I feel a bit surprised at so many people rushing to buy meat, but I can't really work out why I feel like that. Grin

It's not essential to health in any way; it needs refrigeration or freezing, and I dunno...it seems a bit superfluous somehow.

What are you all doing with all that meat then? Grin

Leflic · 19/03/2020 16:25

Meat is fresh. So once all the frozen and long shelf life stuff has gone obviously meat us next.
You can do so much with it using very little of the longer shelf life ingredients and then freeze other portions.
How do you bulk veggies out? Aside from soup its all about rice and pasta which people won’t be in a rush to use.

Alsohuman · 19/03/2020 16:27

How do you bulk veggies out?

Lentils, dried beans, all the things vegetarians and vegans eat all the time.

Peaseblossom22 · 19/03/2020 17:03

I’m really worried about the food waste quite frankly .

People are buying all sorts of things which they are probably not going to use within date and will end up chucking out. Even lentils were sold out in our local supermarket when usually see hardly any being bought .

NeckPainChairSearch · 19/03/2020 17:05

How do you bulk veggies out?

As Alsohuman said, beans, lentils, plus tofu, barley etc. I've also got a big noggin of chorizo I can eke out. Grin
