Live in London- must be 7 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive of me, I went to 3 today- no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread- on top of no cleaning products.
What exactly are we supposed to do? I haven’t seen a restocked supermarket in weeks.
FYI I consider all preppers scum!

If your supermarket has stock, Where are you? What time are you turning up to shop?

I hear there's now a run on alcohol

I'm amazed it's taken so long!!!

bumblingbovine49 · 18/03/2020 16:01

"to all preppers are you still shopping?,,*
I have bought fresh vegetables and milk and bread etc but have not needed to buy anything like pasta, rice runs ,loo roll etc for about 2 weeks.. This week we have a normal delivery arriving and even if half of it is missing we will have plenty to eat. Neither DH nor I have had to worry that we can't feed ourselves so I am. It angry with the panic buyers. I know that would be me if I had not already had enough food in to feed us for several weeks. I have have that level of food in for about 2 years

bumblingbovine49 · 18/03/2020 16:01

I am not angry with panic buyers

Alsohuman · 18/03/2020 16:04

I am and we all should be. They’ve created shortages.

bumblingbovine49 · 18/03/2020 16:08

anybody working in the food chain - farmers, processors, delivery drivers - should be considered an essential worker. Likewise those producing medicines. And I didn't think at the time, but also power station staff, etc.

Absolutely this. And don't forget sanitation workers . We need water and for the rubbish not.to build up ,.otherwise we will get other diseases to add.to.covid19

sueelleker · 18/03/2020 16:39

I'm not an official prepper, and always felt faintly guilty that my cupboards and freezers were full of stuff I hardly used. I'm very grateful now
To the person who mentioned yeast; you can make soda bread with ordinary flour and buttermilk/soured milk.

Devlesko · 18/03/2020 16:54

to all preppers are you still shopping?

Just perishables like milk, eggs, cheese, bread.

Not bought toilet rolls, antibac hand wash or gel. household cleaners, Pasta, Rice, tins, or anything that carries a long use by date as already prepped.

KahlanRahl · 18/03/2020 17:00

As a prepper I (well actually DH) bought cheese, selery, salad, tomatoes, lemons and cucumber. Which was all available in our store. He was supposed to get bread as well but people here were panic buying that so I made my own. The rest of the weekly shop will come out of our stash. So there is more for the rest because of the prepping.

You're welcome.

In my country they are, along with bin men and health care workers. I'm unpleasantly surprised that the UK doesn't see them as essential Confused

To the person who mentioned yeast; you can make soda bread with ordinary flour and buttermilk/soured milk

You can also make sourdough loaf with strong flour and water, once you've got the starter going. No yeast required.

sueelleker · 18/03/2020 17:57

All you need is a bit of ketchup and some toilet paper...
Nooooo-don't waste the toilet paper!

Why not? It seems that everyone has at least 1000 rolls anyway

Gronky · 18/03/2020 18:13

Strangely, today, there was plenty of brown bread but all the white and most of the 50:50 was gone.

VivaLeBeaver · 18/03/2020 18:27

Opposite here, no brown but plenty of white.

Gronky · 18/03/2020 18:34

I wonder if the people in my area have plenty of toilet paper that they want to make good use of or if the people in your area are trying to conserve supplies, VivaLeBeaver Grin

H1978 · 18/03/2020 18:58

It’s definitely a matter of cutting back and learning new eating habits to stop all this ridiculous behaviour Sad

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 18/03/2020 19:05

Is that not Mummies, though? Surely zombies would be more a brown sauce scenario?

DailyKegelReminder · 18/03/2020 19:05

You only have to look at the thread in AIBU at moment where posters are saying they have stocked up, yet are still scared to eat in case "they run out" to realise people are going to continue to buy, out of panic, greed and not being prepared. Whilst most of it is due to panic buyers buying crates of pot noodle (seen today in my local tesco) some of it is due to people fending for themselves so to speak. Its shit, can't tell you how many times I have been out looking for baby essentials this week. No matter what time you go it seems to be empty.

MulticolourMophead · 18/03/2020 19:11

I did see them included as essential workers on the BBC website, in the article about some schools being kept open with skeleton staff for children of essential workers.

theflushedzebra · 18/03/2020 19:44

I panic-bought 2 bottles of wine tonight. It was like the end of the world in that corner shop.

Tesco are now rationing to 3 of any item now - that will maybe calm things down a little.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 18/03/2020 19:53

We panic bought 3 packs of skittles

Not even joking...i made dh leave the house for them immediately

Someone told me that they are stopping producing them and i was not taking the chance that it was fake news

lynsey91 · 18/03/2020 20:07

I am not fortunate that I could get a good stock of food. I am though sensible and prepared.

I have had a good stock for years but never went and bought it all at once. It was bought gradually. Something almost everyone can do. 1 or 2 extra tins or bags of pasta, rice, lentils etc. Hardly breaks the bank - a tin of tomatoes is around 30p, a bag of pasta around 50p

Most people also have some storage space - under the bed, on top of cupboards, wardrobes, even in the loft

theflushedzebra · 18/03/2020 20:38

Things will calm down. Some people have gone on the panic-buying frenzies, no doubt about it - the mistake OP made was confusing preppers with panic buyers.

Slurpy · 18/03/2020 21:12

Rufus- that's really tickled me! I teach, and was doing an exercise with my class on Monday using Skittles. I had to buy 4 big bags, but then bumped into practically everyone I knew in Coop, with my basket full of Skittles. I felt the need to explain!
FYI - I told my class to treat them like a biohazard after being handled and binned them all. 6 quids worth!

DBML · 18/03/2020 21:14

And crumpets. Why crumpets!
I love crumpets and was looking forward to some with a bit of cheese toasted.
