Live in London- must be 7 supermarkets within a 10 minute drive of me, I went to 3 today- no meat, no veg, no fruit, no bread- on top of no cleaning products.
What exactly are we supposed to do? I haven’t seen a restocked supermarket in weeks.
FYI I consider all preppers scum!

If your supermarket has stock, Where are you? What time are you turning up to shop?

OP posts:
puds11 · 17/03/2020 22:31

Fucking yes @BanKittenHeels! You hero! Flowers

puds11 · 17/03/2020 22:33

@GreytExpectations how’s it risky? Breast milk donations are received by hospitals all the time, how is this different?

RedToothBrush · 17/03/2020 22:34

The flush when it appears on social media you know where the idea originated from...

If anything, preppers have actually made more available to the panic buyers by giving retailers the impression that demand was higher and they needed to buy more stock than they need to, since preppers tend to buy a little each week in the months leading up to an event like this. If preppers didn't do that, then the shelves would have been even more empty.

This.

Was speaking to friend whose job is supermarket supplies. They knew there was going to be a panic before it happened because of the news and people already acting on it. So they increased orders anticipating even more demand when the virus became widespread enough to scare them.

They knew it was coming because the sales data was there.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 17/03/2020 22:35

Weird and risky? I take it you haven't ever known any premature babies? Someone is doing something genuinely life-saving, and you are sneering at them?

You really seem to be in a bad place, Greyt. I hope you feel better soon.

Alsohuman · 17/03/2020 22:36

just think the "sneery better than you attitude" is immature and not helpful at a time like this

Bit like the hysterical “you’re all scum” attitude really.

MigginsMrs · 17/03/2020 22:36

So to all preppers are you still shopping?

I’m not a prepper but there was someone on a thread the other day saying she had a month’s worth of food but complaining she had to wait a week for a delivery slot for a top up shop 🙄

BorsetshireBlueBalls · 17/03/2020 22:37

Oh, and the bog roll thing...if necessary, I will wash my bum!

Macaroni46 · 17/03/2020 22:38

Spare a thought for those of us who can't get to the shops when they first open in the morning as we're in jobs that can't be done from home.
I'm getting really frustrated by this.
I'm in work by 7.30 and am currently averaging 10 hour days. By the time I get to the shops there's nothing left.

BanKittenHeels · 17/03/2020 22:38

That seems quite weird and risky of a "favour" at a time like this

Weird how? I donate to a milk bank regularly, I’m not sure how that’s weird?

Good luck to you, seem like you would hate preppers if we came to your house a furnished you with a week of home cooked food in an emergency. But you do you.

RedToothBrush · 17/03/2020 22:39

My son has been really disappointed with the apocalypse so far. He was hoping for more zombies.

Make him a zombie costume.

All you need is a bit of ketchup and some toilet paper...

GreytExpectations · 17/03/2020 22:39

*and you are sneering at them?

You really seem to be in a bad place, Greyt. I hope you feel better soon.*

How patronising. I'm actually really good, thanks for asking, even though you clearly were just being goady. That breast milk poster clearly is showing off so she can have everyone fawn over her. But hey, it's mumsnet and that just the kind of thing that happens on herr

Willow2017 · 17/03/2020 22:40

preppers are the ones who will happily eat their beans whilst they watch the rest of the world struggle. Now, of course they let their anxiety lead to their hoarding and I think that behaviour should not be encouraged but it's quite sad to see humanity would be so selfish
What utter shite!
I cant see anyone i know struggling with anything.
Just because i have had the presense of mind to ensure i can feed my family for two weeks in a crisis i am suppised to share it with everyone who couldnt be bothered to do it themselves and says we are mental, selfish, smug scum?
Jog on. Nearest and dearest yes. Food banks yes. Some arse who has been.taking the piss for weeks nope.
All the horrible posters in the last few weeks saying how they didnt see the point in having any food in because "You idiot preppers, havent you heard of supermarket delivery? I will just do a delivery order and it will be dropped at my door the next day". Hope none are having to self isolate today as many shops are not taking orders for 3 weeks. Thats is a long time to wait for your food!

theflushedzebra · 17/03/2020 22:40

I'm only shopping for stuff I need now - either fresh stuff, or stuff I didn't stockpile - or stuff I did and has been eaten/drunk - like the chocolate and wine Wink I have not bought any soap, pasta or loo roll since the panic buying began. I can't get paracetamol or hand sanitiser - haven't been able to for weeks.

NathanNathan · 17/03/2020 22:41

@BorsetshireBlueBalls care to narrow down SE London? I'm zone 2 SW/SE borders and it pretty ridiculous.

When is this going to bloody end? Surely peoples houses are full/ they must run out of money at some point?

It's the supermarkets can't keep up with demand I really would like to see some accountability. Stopping people buying ridiculous amounts.

userxx · 17/03/2020 22:41

@MigginsMrs Unbelievably selfish attitude.

GreytExpectations · 17/03/2020 22:42

I'm getting really frustrated by this.
I'm in work by 7.30 and am currently averaging 10 hour days. By the time I get to the shops there's nothing left.

I feel sorry for you and that's an awful situation to be in. Sadly you won't get much sympathy on this thread as its full of preppers who will likly say you should have been like them and prepped. But I will sympathise with you in being in a shit situation

BanKittenHeels · 17/03/2020 22:44

How patronising. I'm actually really good, thanks for asking, even though you clearly were just being goady. That breast milk poster clearly is showing off so she can have everyone fawn over her. But hey, it's mumsnet and that just the kind of thing that happens on herr

Oh away and shite.
We get told we hoard it all and don’t help and when I say that me and the preppers I know do quite the opposite, I’m showing off?
God you’re hard to please!

Catch yourself on.

GreytExpectations · 17/03/2020 22:45

i am suppised to share it with everyone who couldnt be bothered to do it themselves

Not what I'm saying at all. I am referring to a worst case scenario situation where we go in lock down and there are no food supplies available. That's when I'd like to think everyone pulls together but if mumsnet is anything to go by, it's going to be every man for themselves. Oh and also don't assume everyone is capable of prepping

RedToothBrush · 17/03/2020 22:46

The time to buy hand sanitiser was when Aldi and Lidl were promoting it by having them on a sales point by the till so that anyone watching the news went "oh yes, I'll get one. That's a good idea"

Because the supermarkets place things based on psychology and making people think about certain items because of the time of year or because there is a certain event.

The supermarkets were doing bogof deals on antibacterial wipes AFTER panic buying had started in some parts of the UK.

Why would they do that, but to help drive sales?

Tbh most preppers get the piss ripped out of them a lot...it must be nice to now feel vindicated

Yep. I'm not a prepper as such, but I have honed my off-grid skills (for living in places where electricity isn't guaranteed/available) and I know a fair few preppers. They've long been mocked and now is their moment Grin

I also hope that all of us - including the preppers who have been enjoying telling MN how incredibly well-stocked they are - are remembering to drop a few things into the food banks. They're running on empty in many places.

I've seen LOADS of preppers on here - and heard them in rl - saying how they have months of supplies. I've yet to see/hear one say that they've therefore made a donation to a food bank.

Bet they do now Grin

SwerfandTurf · 17/03/2020 22:48

Woolwich here.

Shops pretty full, with the exception of loo roll, hand gel, pasta, and baked beans.

I went into Iceland this morning (checked Lidl first - tons of bread and fresh produce; no tins - couldn't face the queues) and it was very well-stocked. Loads of eggs and meat and of course freezer stuff, and not too busy. Stopped by the greengrocer stalls in the market on my way home and got all my fruit and veg. Plenty of cheap berries!

Popped into my local M&S Only Food right before they closed and they were still well stocked, only loo roll absent. They had four tins of no-sugar baked beans left, of which I snaffled two. Oh they had sold out of those salted caramel hot cross buns but pretty sure that's just normal shopping, not stockpiling. They still had plenty of their cheese and chilli hot cross buns but we have to draw the line somewhere.

Gronky · 17/03/2020 22:51

I do hope those calling for wartime-style rationing aren't preppers: thanks to wartime powers, homes could be searched without a warrant and those found to be in possession of 'excessive quantities' fined for their hoard and prevented from purchasing more until they'd used it up.

theflushedzebra · 17/03/2020 22:52

I don't think anyone deserves this, thank you. I just think OP is confusing preppers with panic buyers. The former did cause this.

tobermoryisthebestwomble · 17/03/2020 22:52

Prepper here, and no, not shopping. I went on Friday for fresh fruit, milk, and meat (and wine!). I didn't need to buy loo roll or hand wash or beans or pasta though. Because I've had all that in for weeks. Forward purchasing not panic buying.
