I can’t believe what I’m seeing... a few pubs on FB are sharing this post encouraging people to keep coming. I don’t know where to begin with the stupidity here... (see attached pic) Yes in times of “crisis” we usually all go to the pub - arguably unless that “crisis” is a viral disease?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Am I being unreasonable, is this completely irresponsible?

The government will have to step in with support for these businesses.

Sonichu · 17/03/2020 18:23

How dare businesses want to stay open, selfish bastards. If you don't want to go, then don't!

Bimbleberries · 17/03/2020 18:23

giving businesses loans, and giving people rent breaks or mortgage holidays, isn't really going to help them much though, as everything will be worse when they try to come back - building up a business again is so hard, and when you then have to pay increased rent/mortgage to make up for it, or all the deferred taxes ,or loan repayments - especially if you were just making ends meet before, means that small businesses and particularly self-employed people will still be very worried.

Irresponsible, but understandable not wanting to lose everything I guess.

todayisnottuesday · 17/03/2020 18:25

Wow. Even worse than the footage of all the twats on their hols in Spain refusing to leave the bars when they were trying to close. They'll be the first to loudly demand medical assistance when they do get it though I bet.....

Coronavirus has certainly brought out a LOT of contenders for the Darwin Natural Selection prize for stupidity hasn't it?

Don't be angry at the businesses. Be angry at the gov who refuses to shut them down officially and because of that they can't claim on insurance 🤷

Cam77 · 17/03/2020 18:38

The government is now frantically backtracking away from the disastrous policy of the last couple of weeks which would have likely led to six figure mortality towards a rational policy of suppression/containment. See links below from today if you can’t see it. How costly will the dithering prove to be? How many now in the UK already, possibly 50,000 I heard touted earlier today. Johnson will have a lot of explaining to do when this is all over. Seems some of the experts weren’t so expert afterall and “timing is crucial” was a load of nonsense.

It's not just pubs and bars. Local, independent cafes and restaurants have been imploring people too.
The govt left them high and dry yesterday. not closing them but telling people not to go.
Hopefully today's announcement from the chancellor will help.

Unhomme · 17/03/2020 18:42

The government has just announced a massive support package. Once this has all blown over.

Ilovemypantry · 17/03/2020 18:43

@Pieceofpurplesky
You mean a Coronavirus Party!

afrikat · 17/03/2020 18:46

Today I have been invited to a soft play party next week, been sent a voucher for a piercing to be used this month and seen several pubs advertise they are still open. I'm working from home, as are the rest of my team, but we have been told by a senior manager we should have 'presence' in the office and should sort out some kind of rota. We have refused

I fucking despair

Ilovemypantry · 17/03/2020 18:48

@ToelessPobble
I’m not convinced that pubs and restaurants offering takeaway food is a safe option. How do we know who has coughed/sneezed/handled the food ?
.

BeAnythingBeKind · 17/03/2020 18:49

Just because a pub is open doesn't mean you HAVE to go, if people want to go, that's up to them. I'm not stopping my normal day to life, if I want to go to a pub, I will

LookCloser · 17/03/2020 18:50

Ridiculous and yes very irresponsible OP.

You could be sparkling clean, but people are still going to congregate, food is handled, surfaces aren't going to be wiped straight after someone's touched them, people will cough, sneeze, talk in close proximity.
The measures put in place are to avoid the complete collapse of society and businesses in the long run.
If everyone just fucking stuck to it then we'd all be out of this a lot quicker with much less deaths and economical damage.
Short term pain for a longer term gain. I won't have much sympathy if they're struggling to run their business if they're not going to take the steps needed.

solarisbabe · 17/03/2020 18:53

And yet they're not closing schools
I think that's coming soon - my eldest DCs school have now had to close two year groups because of staff shortages and the youngest's school has half of the teachers off now, they are a one form entry school so unless they merge classes and have one class for years 1-3 and another for 4-6 and one for Reception they won't be able to stay open.

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/03/2020 18:56

@Bercows probably the same people whose kids are at school still and spreading the infection everywhere.

DGRossetti · 17/03/2020 18:58

businesses in hospitality and leisure NEED to watch todays update from Rishi Sunak just on the BBC

Well more than that. They need to trust it.

If people are having a hard time believing politicians, it should hardly come as a shock. This is where years of unchecked lies and posturing gets you. Maybe someone could write a cautionary tale about it ? Using a wolf as a analogy for a crisis ...

PlainBritishFlour · 17/03/2020 18:59

You think pubs are bad. I work in a nightclub. Think about exactly what goes on in a bloody nightclub. How close everyone is. How much touching goes on.

Because of Boris not just telling us to fucking close we'll be open for tonight (St Paddy's Day) and for the foreseeable future. And so will most the nightclubs around the country!!!

And don't think that the British people are smart and won't go. Oh no. We've been a bit quiet but I wouldn't say dead or able to close by a long shot.

So this will be fun to watch.

MyDcAreMarvel · 17/03/2020 18:59

How dare businesses want to stay open, selfish bastards. If you don't want to go, then don't!

Jane follows advice and does not go to the pub, Peter does go the pub, catches Corona and infects Jane in Asda. See the problem!

TheYearOfTheDog · 17/03/2020 19:00

Crazy. I'm in Ireland and our pubs are shut.

TheYearOfTheDog · 17/03/2020 19:02

@Ilovemypantry I agree, if I order anything I will put it in the microwave for a minute to try and zap any droplets, but even having thought about that has put me off ordering food.

emmcan · 17/03/2020 19:02

Many of these are not small though.

M&B (Ember/Sizzler/All Bar One/Miller and Carter) have sent out a blanket email today saying that unless the govt forces them to close they must remain open.

Staff that do not wish to work can take holiday or unpaid leave, but are not entitled to SSP unless sick. Nice.

Small business deserves support though, maybe in the form of vouchers bought now to be used at a later date?

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 17/03/2020 19:02

if we close without it being mandatory we are up shit creek without a paddle

Explain what difference mandatory closing will make @Barmaid101 ?

ArgumentativeAardvaark · 17/03/2020 19:03

M&B (Ember/Sizzler/All Bar One/Miller and Carter) have sent out a blanket email today saying that unless the govt forces them to close they must remain open.

Shockingly irresponsible.

PlainBritishFlour · 17/03/2020 19:04

@emmcan Stonegate have sent out the same email. We will work until the Government tell us not to.

And again. That's not just pubs.

NIGHTCLUBS ARE OPEN AND BEING USED!!
