To think this FB post is incredibly irresponsible!

I can’t believe what I’m seeing... a few pubs on FB are sharing this post encouraging people to keep coming. I don’t know where to begin with the stupidity here... (see attached pic) Yes in times of “crisis” we usually all go to the pub - arguably unless that “crisis” is a viral disease?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

Am I being unreasonable, is this completely irresponsible?

Not if it's the Winchester.

ShirleyPhallus · 17/03/2020 17:31

It’s not really irresponsible in the same way that spreading incorrect medical advice is.

I really feel for local businesses, I cant get her up on blaming them for doing what they can do get some business in when possible really.

MysticWytche · 17/03/2020 17:32

Well... as long as they're doing their "upmost" eh?
Idiots!

lubeybooby · 17/03/2020 17:32

businesses in hospitality and leisure NEED to watch todays update from Rishi Sunak just on the BBC

They are going to be propped up and be ok. Measures in place from next week

Measures also coming for business rates and Mortgages

RickSanchez · 17/03/2020 17:32

This is what comes of half arsed measures by the government. Close pubs or don't.

WeakAndWeary · 17/03/2020 17:32

These people are trying to save their businesses and the livelihoods of their employees. Just imagine if that was you staring down ruination instead of being outraged on Mumsnet. I completely understand how they feel and I would support them. The pub is no more dangerous than the supermarket or walking past a carrier of the virus in the street. Nobody is forcing YOU to go.

Jespers · 17/03/2020 17:33

Yeah, that’s not in the public interest is it, they just don’t want to go bust.
There was a landlord on the news today banging on about how important pubs could be to the community in these dire times, and then he sort of broke down and went on about how they were done for... I’m sorry he might lose his business but in times of social
Exclusion pubs are not the place to be...

RhymingRabbit3 · 17/03/2020 17:34

They're closing churches. I dont think you can argue that places of sanctuary must be kept open if they're closing churches!

IceBearRocks · 17/03/2020 17:36

Our local village pub is closing but will be doing take away food for people !

#Community

Kit19 · 17/03/2020 17:38

I completely get how awful it is for pubs most of whom are barely surviving as it is

But yes it’s irresponsible to encourage ppl to use them And god knows I could do with going to the pub right now

CakeAndGin · 17/03/2020 17:48

A couple of local cafes have made similar Facebook posts today - they’ve reduced their small number of tables to ensure more space between people, they’ve posted about their cleanliness, they’re offering takeaway menus. These places are just trying to survive. The chancellor is saying they will prop these business up but this came 24 hours after telling everyone to avoid pubs and cafes. This has also come as the last few weeks people have been going out less and less. These small businesses have had no support from government. They are doing what they need to survive.

Whilst pubs might not the ideal place at the moment, they (and cafes, restaurants, independent shops) are the lifeblood of a community and they shouldn’t have to fight to survive. My village may see the closure of its 3 small cafes, 2 small hairdressers, 3 pubs and 5 independent shops. Those are probably employing about 70 people between them, 70 people from our village, some of whom aren’t able to travel elsewhere and will be unable to get other jobs. Those closures will kill our high street that has already lost its bank, its ATM, it’s post office is on reduced hours. Our village needs these community spaces and employers. I don’t begrudge then trying to save themselves, in the same way I don’t begrudge someone self isolating to save themselves.

What nobody is talking about in all this is the indirect lives lost through CV. Job losses, diverted NHS services, already woeful MH services - we are heading to a MH crisis on the back of CV and that will also cost lives.

wouldyouadamandeveit · 17/03/2020 17:50

What @WeakAndWeary said.

Sirzy · 17/03/2020 17:52

I think the announcements today about support for businesses will change things and lead to more closing. However today I can fully understand the pressure that must have been felt by owners of such establishments trying to do what is best whilst also keep their business afloat.

Even with today’s measures though if some close and others don’t then we will end up seeing more people in the places that stay open so increased risk. that’s why decisive action is needed

FAQs · 17/03/2020 17:54

@Unhomme that was my first thought ha.

stouffer · 17/03/2020 17:56

@Unhomme. Yes, but dogs still can’t look up.

LHMBF · 17/03/2020 18:02

Agree with WeakAndWeary

lamppostdog · 17/03/2020 18:07

And yet they're not closing schools

ToelessPobble · 17/03/2020 18:13

Some of the pubs are doing takeout and food delivery as a way of keeping some money coming in. Much safer idea.

Barmaid101 · 17/03/2020 18:14

I’ve not seen today’s update yes, but if we close without it being mandatory we are up shit creek without a paddle and you know we have still had customers who are in holiday. If we close we cannot pay our staff, suppliers, rent, bills....
We have a 5star hygiene rating and have taken extra precautions.
Also we have a shit load of food in the fridge that needs selling and a shit load of beer in the cellar that’s been paid for that we want to sell.
There are no confirmed cases anywhere near us currently.
As long as I am well and we are still open I will still be going into work.

QueenLucyPevensie · 17/03/2020 18:17

I totally feel for these small businesses, it must be awful - but surely social responsibility comes first. If people keep going to pubs, the virus will keep spreading, and this will all go on for much longer, causing even more disruption...

They are going to be propped up and be ok

Ha!

Pieceofpurplesky · 17/03/2020 18:19

A local pun here is having a 'closing down for a while' party tonight. Hopefully they will make plenty of money for the staff.

Sirzy · 17/03/2020 18:19

But doesn’t social responsibility also involve making sure people have a roof over their heads and food to eat?

Pomegranatemolasses · 17/03/2020 18:21

In Ireland we saw these messages on Saturday. By Sunday night the government had forced all pubs to close, and by yesterday almost all cafes and hotels have followed suit.

I've posted this on various threads, but seriously? When is the UK going to wake up?

SistemaAddict · 17/03/2020 18:21

A closing down party? What part of social distancing are people finding so hard to understand?
