British shops please take note

Ontario, Vancouver, Newfoundland and Labrador and some places in the States are aranging early hours from 7am-8am as shopping exclusivley for the elderly and the vulnerable in both grocery shops and pharmacies. In Edmonton, they have been saving 50 percent of loo roll stock for the elderly also. It looks like there are ways to do this to help the elderly, so please consider it UK stores.

Unfortunately from what I’ve seen in the last couple of weeks, a large proportion of Brits are so inherently selfish that those early hours would be swamped by healthy people wanting to avoid others, and therefore infecting a lot of vulnerable people at once.

Local Iceland is doing it here. Admittedly it's quite out of the way and bus passes aren't accepted until after 9, so most probably won't be able to utilise it, but it's a nice thought. It would be good if something was done maybe in the evening for those younger people with mental health conditions which make busy places problematic.

All Lidl stores in Northern Ireland are doing it too (9am -11am) as are a few Icelands.

We have it here in Ireland. Each big brand supermarket set hours for over 65's, medical staff and emergency service personnel. Local stores are offering to take orders over the phone and deliver to the people who cant or are afraid to go out

Well Peter, my post was about more people than just your MIL, and there are certainly ones that don't have anyone to do pick up for them. But as long as you and yours are ok, I guess you don't have to give a shit about anyone else, and can be annoyed at me passing on an idea that I was pleased to see in action. I certainly wasn't taking credit for coming up with it. I'd noted many saying they wished it was happening, and now it has started. A happy note in an other wise shit situation, but if you'd prefer to shit all over it and me, well crack on you must be a joy!

That’s great for your MIL @PeterPanGoesWrong but what about the thousands of elderly or disabled people who don’t have relatives nearby to help them? Should they just fuck off out of sight for the next 12 to 16 weeks as so many MNers seem to think is ok?

It’s a good idea, one that’s been taking off in parts of the UK and elsewhere, so it’s no harm for OP to post about it. It might encourage people to push the supermarkets who aren’t yet doing it to put something in place.

Australia is doing this too. A great aunt went at 7am yesterday though and the shelves were still empty!!!

Yay! I'm so pleased to hear that it's even more widely spread, this is such a fantastic plan! I've been looking after my elderly mum, who's been shut in (due to power outages in her building for almost three weeks now, so can't use the lift), but worrying about the other vulnerable people out there. I've dropped loo roll and food in the food hampers, but I know many elderly don't use the food banks. I keep looking for the good in this situation, and get so pleased even with the little bits people are doing to help. Thank you to everyone that is helping and thinking of others!

The trouble is that the big supermarkets here are being emptied within the first two hours of opening so is it the older generation bulk buying the majority of the food?
