I was in my local Tesco at 9am
There was no meat (no chickens or bacon)
The toilet rolls gone,no pasta (basically the obvious things )
At 9am you would think there would be some available.
Is this the same in your area?

Agreed. There is no way the government is restricting the amount of product we can put out! We're not hiding it out the back! Some idiot asked me today if we had loo roll out the back and when I said no sorry he said could you just go and check ? As if we would have great pallets of the stuff and just leave it in the warehouse. Give me strength

mindproject · 17/03/2020 23:49

Usually when something is really popular the shops become awash with that product. I remember when loom bands came out, you couldn't move for them all of a sudden. How come now is different. The things people really want and think they need are the things people can't get. Again, I smell a rat.

Again, I smell a rat.
Err lets see there was no lockdowns in the country producing them nor a world wide pandemic when loom bands were a kids craze.
We can sell 50 pkts of loo rolls in half an hour what chance have we got of keeping up with that?

BlackForestCake · 18/03/2020 01:07

Are people suddenly going to start baking when they don’t normally do?

It's the flour that I don't understand. I understand the pasta and tinned soup and so on. But there must be millions of people who've never baked a thing in their life buying up tons of flour.

Stellaris22 · 18/03/2020 01:18

I do bake bread, not as often as I'd like, but I can. I planned to buy one pack of bread flour, but no, that's not going to happen

SushiGo · 18/03/2020 05:56

I'm deeply grateful that we are bakers already because we've already got bread flour and yeast etc. We're in isolation as a family of 5 and bread does not last long!

If anyone can't get bread Jack has a recipe for making it with plain flour and yogurt that works really well.

I know the peppers are feeling defensive but in the first few days of stocks running low there were peppers posting on MN - should I still buy pasta or should I use the stash and being told to keep buying because we aren't 'there yet' and I'm sorry but we were obviously there already. It was blatantly obvious what was going to happen next, which is millions of people now self-isolating at home can't get basics at all while peppers who could have switched to their stash last week and relieved some of the pressure on supermarkets didn't. Everyone has a hand in this and unless you as a prepper can honestly say you haven't brought anything essential since the crisis started you have contributed to the problem.

In the meantime. Yes I agree we should have rationing. I don't know if it could be organised as quickly as needed but otherwise some people will starve.

AnneKipanki · 18/03/2020 07:47

People had already prepared for Brexit.
Most preppers are fully prepped months in advance.

SushiGo · 18/03/2020 07:52

You haven't read what I posted.

Excuse the prepper/pepper typo HmmGrin

The point remains. Go back and read threads from last week. People who were well prepared with large stashes last week were being advised by other preppers to keep 'shopping normally' and not do into their stash yet.

That advice and the preppers that followed it contributed to the problem as it was obvious at that point that there would be issues with supply.

Thisisworsethananticpated · 18/03/2020 07:59

Jesus why do you think ?
Are the food sector meant to be immune from the issues facing everyone else ??

So their staff (and supply chain ) don’t
Self isolate
Get sick
Have kids
Have family to care for
Have transport issues

Jesus - it’s so entitled

FrankieManca · 18/03/2020 07:59

Do people not think the endless threads about empty shelves just add to the frenzy?

Aesopfable · 18/03/2020 08:41

Frankie absolutely. The panic buying has been media driven not Corona-driven. Sensationalist reports of empty shelves early on has just driven more people in. If you see a toilet roll now you need to be very restrained not to buy it just in case you can’t find them when you do need them in four weeks time. Same with other products.

Weregoingonanadventure · 18/03/2020 10:00

I have never panic bought in my life. I got shopping every Thursday morning, so I havnt been on a shop since last Thursday and I will do my usualy by going tomorrow.
I always buy a little extra, so it doesnt impact supply because it's what my tesco would consider normal sales and would be included in their calculations for re-ordering. It means I have a couple months if pantry food and meat in the freezer but it's never caused any issues with food supply; it's just my normal shop (so it's like I shop for a 4 person household, when we're a 3 person household).

The only things I dont "keep in stock" are fresh things and bread etc, but because of everyone else shopping like idiots, I'm starting to feel that tomorrow if there is bread available then I should buy 4 loaves instead of 2 and freeze the extra. And I should get extra veg to freeze etc. I only think I will need it because if I dont, other people will clear the shelves. If the shelves are clear when I go in the morning then we wont have any of that stuff so if they have it, I will want to stock up.

The panic buyers and turning the normal shoppers into more panic buyers!! I'm trying to talk myself down so I dobt become part of the problem.

Itwasntme1 · 18/03/2020 10:08

I cleared out my cupboards to see what exactly I have. Was horrified, I had things five years out of date😊😂.

I am trying to to be too fussy with dates, pasta keeps longer than best before dates right? And tinned tomatoes.

I will be honest, the media coverage is starting to get to me. I am worried about my parents and have an urge to buy loads of tinned food incase the supply chains collapse. But I am resisting.

Ventilatorshortage · 18/03/2020 10:11

You'll have to get out early.

My tesco had stock.
So did marks and Spencer

Zaphodsotherhead · 18/03/2020 10:17

I love the idea of the cashier saying that the government has limits on what they put out! Sounds to me like a cashier who's been abused once too many times about the shop not having loo rolls and has decided to move the blame to the government rather than tell the customer that it's the bloody CUSTOMERS that are doing it!

Government! Even the high-ups in our shop can be overridden by the manager who's on the floor at the time, trying to keep stock moving.

Weregoingonanadventure · 18/03/2020 10:17

My tesco opens at 7. I usually drop the kids at breakfast club at 8.10 then go shopping.
We usually go a walk round the local woods from 6 till 7, then get home and they shower and dress for school. I think we will skip the walk so they can shower and dress for 7 and we can get to Tesco for it opening.

Weregoingonanadventure · 18/03/2020 10:18

@Itwasntme1
I live by the "if I open the tin and it smells ok then its fine" rule. The dates mean nothing to me! And we havnt died yet from poisoned food.
