Tesco bare....why aren't the shelves being restocked ?

I was in my local Tesco at 9am
There was no meat (no chickens or bacon)
The toilet rolls gone,no pasta (basically the obvious things )
At 9am you would think there would be some available.
Is this the same in your area?

Our Iceland opened at 10 today to stock up. Asda were closing for a few hours this afternoon to restock shelves. Local butchers was really busy.

Loppy10 · 17/03/2020 14:38

Aldi was fairly well stocked, but are limiting customers to 4 items each

Charlottejbt · 17/03/2020 14:38

I don't think the lack of chicken can last very long (unless there are supply problems). People have limited fridge/freezer capacity and at some point will have to stop buying.

LittleMonstersMummy · 17/03/2020 14:47

Saw a woman buying about 50 boxes of eggs yesterday but she can't possibly go through 50 boxes of a dozen eggs that quickly!

Rosebel · 17/03/2020 14:47

Asda 4am shelves full.
Asda 9am no toilet roll, no pasta, no pasta sauce, no sausages....
It probably is getting refilled but then, sells out.

JudyCoolibar · 17/03/2020 14:47

I really wish they would ration people strictly. I think one of the big stores was limiting people to four each of essential goods, which simply meant that shelves were stripped bare within an hour instead of half an hour.

Surely all those people who have been piling their trolleys high with loo paper now have enough for the next five years and could leave one or two rolls for the rest of us?

listsandbudgets · 17/03/2020 14:47

Went to Lidl yesterday - one bag of pasta (left if for someone else) No toilet paper, limited fruit and veg, no tinned pulses, hardly any baked beans, no frozen potato products, hardly any eggs, no anti bac stuff...

but hey the chocolate aisle and the bakery had loads - I'm going to be very happy in isolation!!

Baboomtsk · 17/03/2020 14:48

I went into my local Sainsburys at lunchtime today, almost fully stocked, including plenty of fresh produce.

Went into both ASDA and Morrisons at the weekend. Morrisons was much better but neither had pasta or rice.

Why is it panic buying. I'm late 60s with a disabled husband in his 70s. We are supposed to be isolating or distancing or whatever it is. I can't get an online shop, tried them all and nothing available for three weeks. Maybe I need to try at midnight and book a slot for 3 weeks? Meanwhile what do we eat. I have some stuff in but not 3 weeks worth of everything, funnily enough I probably have enough loo rolls as when I bought some last week they only had bags of 24 and I normally buy a bag of 9 so hooray it won't be let them eat cake it will be let them eat loo roll.

I wish I'd bought more stuff last week, maybe I should have panicked.

Justaboy · 17/03/2020 14:49

The thin veneer of civilisation eh?.

Bet the supermarkets must think christmas has come early;)..

Bargebill19 · 17/03/2020 14:50

Maybe she bought eggs so she didn’t need loo roll....?

Icecreamdiva · 17/03/2020 14:50

I think they are hiding the available stock in the warehouse as a evil joke on innocent customers.

Homkaismycat · 17/03/2020 14:52

I went to my local Sainsbury’s.
Absolutely bare.
Nothing.. I mean nothing.

Lulu1919 · 17/03/2020 14:53

I've just benefit to a big Tesco Extra
Freezer empty of veg etc
No tinned veg or tomato
No rice pasta noodles
Etc etc
Was really odd and made me feel a bit anxious !!

cologne4711 · 17/03/2020 14:55

Same in my local Sainsburys. I was able to get some fresh fruit, and they had plenty of milk (and chocolate!) but no bread. Waitrose not much better for bread.

There is going to be so much food wastage. You can use non-perishables any time but there's a limit to how much bread you can fit in your freezer!

HiDuggee · 17/03/2020 14:56

I work in a Tesco express, we seem to run out of things slower than big supermarkets, worth a try?

turdtimelucky · 17/03/2020 14:57

If you're big rice eaters - the Asian grocers on high streets usually sell massive bags of rice. Cheap as chips too. I'm in a multicultural part of London however, so might not apply to all regions.

DitheringDoris · 17/03/2020 14:58

I’m pretty much in the sticks and CV panic has only reached our nearest town today, popped into the supermarket yesterday, mostly full shelves apart from the obvious, loo roll, pasta etc. Had to queue to park today and the shelves are bare, no milk, bread, eggs, any sort of tissue including napkins, biscuits all gone, freezers mostly bare. It was busier than Christmas, we have a lot of elderly here, it looks like they will be taking isolation seriously here. I’m pleased.

turdtimelucky · 17/03/2020 14:59

The big sacks of rice they have though - fuck knows where you'd store them in a normal flat. They're massive. £10 and you'd have enough rice for 2 years I reckon.

countrygirl99 · 17/03/2020 15:07

DH went to Sainbury's mid morning and it was bare. The checkout lady told there was a big queue when they opened at 7 and she had several loads over £300, a few over £500 through her till.

Lucylou37 · 17/03/2020 15:10

If you are able to, I'd look at what your local restaurants and cafes are doing too! Lots of places are offering takeaways and deliveries! That might be an option? My brother has a small business supplying wine to bar and restaurant trade, his orders are running dry at the moment! I'm hoping he can get some orders from local public, and will driver straight to the door! The big chains aren't always the best place to go in times of crisis!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/03/2020 15:19

The panic buying scares me more than the virus to be honest. I’m certain people are taking more perishable food than they can store which will end up thrown away. This greed just disgusts me.

I agree - and the ones who suffer are the people who live week-to-week, with no cash spare even to buy an extra tin of beans to put aside for emergency rations. It's selfish, and it's cruel - I can't imagine how stressed some people on low incomes must be.

no loo rolls, soap, cold remedies, pasta etc (all the usual). Some people must have VAST stocks of these things

Or are making a fortune on e-bay . . .

Melroses · 17/03/2020 15:19

There must come a point where the supermarkets' algorithms mean that the shelves are choc-a-block with pasta, and everybody's cupboards will be full of the stuff as well Grin

Lynda07 · 17/03/2020 15:20

I haven't been out but my son has visited a 24 hour Tesco near him in the early hours of the morning to avoid many people and he has been unable to buy lots of things including toilet rolls, tissues, kitchen rolls, tomato soup and the like. Luckily I have plenty and can supply but it is a problem everywhere.

It's not a bad idea to visit handy and corner shops, they seem to have them and will find one packet for a customer at normal price.

I've managed to get quite a lot from online deliveries, including the milkman, and some things from ebay though you have to be careful, a lot of sellers put their prices up astronomically. The ones I bought were reasonably priced. I'm not stockpiling or panic buying but have always bought some things in bulk.

I was told tomato soup is being sold in packs of four in 'Poundland' - I don't have one near me but it's useful for people to know.

This will come to an end eventually but it is so hard and worrying. However we can exist without toilet rolls if it comes to it - not a nice thought - but not food.

Yesterday someone decided to walk off with my 90 year old dad’s shopping trolley while his back was turned. Unfortunately it also contained his walking stick and shopping bags. Maybe it was a genuine mistake and someone thought it was their trolley but the way people are behaving it wouldn’t surprise me if some entitled idiot just decided to help themselves.
