To think that China needs to act

From what I understand, the coronavirus originated in a wet market in Wuhan that sold animals both dead and alive. According to the Telegraph, these markets "pose a heightened risk of viruses jumping from animals to humans because hygiene standards are difficult to maintain if live animals are being kept and butchered on site. Typically, they are also densely packed."

Also: "The animal source of the latest outbreak has not yet been identified, but the original host is thought to be bats. Bats were not sold at the Wuhan market but may have infected live chickens or other animals sold there. Bats are host to a wide range of zoonotic viruses including Ebola, HIV and rabies."

When this latest pandemic dies down, the Chinese government needs to ban these wet markets entirely. Will the rest of the world be putting pressure on them to do so or will we simply continue as before until the next pandemic breaks out?

They have already acted and introduced a ban.

@ShanghaiDiva introduced a ban on what exactly - wet markets?

This is what we are talking about, for those of you thinking the concerns about live animal markets are not justified

Christ almighty - what in god's name is that?!

Do you think all animals are wild though, we eat birds, cattle, sheep, fish. Aren't they all a risk. I wonder how many people will stop eating meat now. That photo is horrendous, it's bad enough seeing ducks in the windows in restaurants here. I think there will be a lot of anger when this ends.

ShanghaiDiva · 17/03/2020 21:35

@Dongdingdong sale and consumption of wild animals.

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 21:40

I think it’s very clear wild meat is sold in these markets and not controlled.

And secondly introducing a ban is one thing.

Enforcing it is a different matter entirely.

DrSheldonCooperPHD · 17/03/2020 21:42

They introduced a ban before and then reinstated them which is what the above video is about - the history.

HappyHammy · 17/03/2020 21:43

Even if they try and enforce it there will always ve a black market. Tine to stop killing wild animals for so called herbal medicines thst dont even work.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 17/03/2020 21:46

What bluntness just said

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/03/2020 21:47

China has acted!
What more can they do, it’s already illegal.
You can’t sanction a country over one crime committed by one person within that country.

Besides, I read the wet market was actually a seafood market, which is run no different from a European fish & seafood market.

YgritteSnow · 17/03/2020 21:48

Yes we need a worldwide ban on fresh food and should only be eating processed sterilised food. Everything grow in a lab and chlorinated before consumption

That is literally one of the stupidest things I have ever read on here.

Russellbrandshair · 17/03/2020 21:50

I agree. If Chiba can lock down millions then SURELY they can stop these markets. This isn’t even the first bloody time is it? SARS etc
Why haven’t they done anything?!!!

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/03/2020 21:50

I think there have to be restrictions on travel out of China until this is sorted. Because the virus originated there but the big number of Chinese tourists helped spread it, so until these practices are stopped it can all happen again.

But it's not going to happen, because tourism brings money.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/03/2020 21:52

Found it, WHO situation report #1
“On 11 and 12 January 2020, WHO received further detailed information from the National Health Commission China that the outbreak is associated with exposures in one seafood market in Wuhan City.”
www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/situation-reports/20200121-sitrep-1-2019-ncov.pdf?sfvrsn=20a99c10_4

It was a seafood market. As in fish, lobster, shellfish sold wet and dead or wet and alive. No chickens, no pigs, no cows, no bats FFS, that’s fake news.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/03/2020 21:52

You can’t sanction a country over one crime committed by one person within that country.

What are you on about? The cover up, the denials, the lack of action when there was still a chance it could be contained?

No one is talking about one person.

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 21:52

You can’t sanction a country over one crime committed by one person within that country

Are you seriously trying to get people to believe that wild meat is not sold in markets and this was one rogue trader who did an act no one else has done or did, and sold wild animals like bats and snakes? Seriously?

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 21:54

No chickens, no pigs, no cows, no bats FFS, that’s fake news

Are you having a laugh?

Russellbrandshair · 17/03/2020 21:54

China needs to crack down on this or face international sanctions

Totally agree. I’m livid as I’m sure we all are. This has affected the entire world. They MUST be made to stop this happening again

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/03/2020 21:56

I’m relaying what the WHO reported. You are all just posting gossip. Unfounded claims that it came from a wet market for animals (fake news) when it was traced to a seafood market. And there is zero evidence of any cover up or denials...post it if you have it.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 17/03/2020 21:56

So because it calls itself "seafood market" then it must sell only seafood.

Of course.

ShanghaiDiva · 17/03/2020 21:57

Agree. Given how they have managed with measures to control the virus, controlling the sale and consumption of wild animals is simple in comparison.
China has suffered a huge loss of face over the virus and I can’t see them allowing this to happen again. They should have taken more action after SARS.

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 21:58

Your argument is the terminology used to describe the market?

Where do you feel it originated from then if not this market, what caused it in your view? Do share...

Russellbrandshair · 17/03/2020 22:00

Good grief I dont give a flying fck where it came from or what the market sold or was called. This is the second time a virus has evolved from the same place due to the same reasons. It’s killed enough people and will bankrupt and destroy lives and families in every country in the world. China need to STOP this now. Sanctions are the only way to force this.

PlanDeRaccordement · 17/03/2020 22:00

Where is the cover up and denial? The WHO reports that China informed them as quickly as required and took all necessary steps:
“On 31 December 2019, the WHO China Country Office was informed of cases of pneumonia unknown etiology (unknown cause) detected in Wuhan City, Hubei Province of China. From 31 December 2019 through 3 January 2020, a total of 44 case-patients with pneumonia of unknown etiology were reported to WHO by the national authorities in China. During this reported period, the causal agent was not identified.
• On 11 and 12 January 2020, WHO received further detailed information from the National Health Commission China that the outbreak is associated with exposures in one seafood market in Wuhan City.
• The Chinese authorities identified a new type of coronavirus, which was isolated on 7 January 2020.
• On 12 January 2020, China shared the genetic sequence of the novel coronavirus for countries to use in developing specific diagnostic kits.
• On 13 January 2020, the Ministry of Public Health, Thailand reported the first imported case of lab-confirmed novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) from Wuhan, Hubei Province, China.”

Bluntness100 · 17/03/2020 22:02

So what caused it in this one seafood market then!

Russellbrandshair · 17/03/2020 22:02

Oh well that’s cool then. We”ll get through this and go through the very same thing with another virus next decade eh? All totes fine!
