Social distancing, reckon we'll comply??

Just wondering really. It's all so weird and confusing and on this site I have seen people ask if they should attend parties this weekend. No. We need to stay away from others unless necessary. I believe that if we don't comply the government will order the closure of venues and we may even end up ordered indoors. Come on people, we can DO this. We have social media, FaceTime etc. Think of the vulnerable.

this virus isnt going anywhere until

  1. enough people have caught it and it has no new host to infect
  2. there is a vaccine - 12-18 months off.

lockdown for 2 weeks is going to do fuck all. its widespread in the community. You could isolate London, but that wont stop it popping up in a dozen other places. And you cannot have a world wide lockdown for a month. Not without power, food, hospitals.
Until we develop immunity IF thats possible, we are as a planet, going to have to ride it out. Plus now there is a big swathe of China which is still vulnerable and will remain so, and could burst out again once they loosen their restrictions.

adiposegirl2 · 17/03/2020 14:34

We all must comply.

Those in breach should be sectioned under the mental health act.

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 14:36

That's what people don't get, @NettleTea

As I said, the Black Death went away eventually and so will this.

You don't know what the mental health act is, do you?

Underhisi · 17/03/2020 14:45

Not from what I've seen this morning. People constantly getting in your space when there is no need, cafes full of over 70's ( from window I didn't go in) and a school aged child ( with parent)persistently coughing their way around Asda.

😕

bestbefore · 17/03/2020 14:53

Judging by the 3 old girls I saw sitting outside the pub sharing a bottle of white this lunchtime I don't think so. 100% sure they were all aged 70+. Half of me thought good for them but in reality it's not good...

Titslikepicassos · 17/03/2020 14:56

As I said, the Black Death went away eventually and so will this.

Fucking hell - people in the 1300s walled themselves into their towns and villages, abandoned their children and burnt down cites to outrun the plague and it still wiped out over 60% of Europe’s population... and came back in waves for over 7 years!

adaline · 17/03/2020 14:57

As I said, the Black Death went away eventually and so will this.

Yeah, after killing 60% of the population!

Jesus.

I agree but they aren't talking lockdown for 2 weeks, the government has already said the measures will be in place for several months.

RedskyAtnight · 17/03/2020 15:03

Just seen a post on a local facebook group from someone who is asking for recommendations for someone who can do her nails on Thursday night for a hen do on Friday.

She's had quite a few recommendations and not a single WTF!!!

... so I really don't think people get it.

NettleTea · 17/03/2020 15:03

@FollowingNow I agree, but at the other end of the 'Im Ok and going out with my mates, I see the 'Im going into lockdown / self isolation' for 2 weeks which is simply pointless if you have no symptoms.
some people seem to think that a 2 week isolation somehow makes you immune too.

fivesecondrule · 17/03/2020 15:05

Has anyone seen the clip of the British woman in the hotel pool in Tenerife?

winterbear990 · 17/03/2020 15:05

I don't think a large enough number will comply, no.

I have a small family and social circle and so far I've had my DP moaning about not being able to get the bus to work, and my elderly DM assuming she can flit between her sheltered housing complex and her sisters house on the bus a few times a week.

I saw a post on social media last night from a woman I know, she posted a picture of her sat in a pub with a beer doing a thumbs up and had a triumphant grin on her face. The caption said along the lines of "Fuck this coronavirus I'm going to enjoy myself because people are dying of worser (sic) illnesses"

It is angering, disheartening and stupid.

I think the conclusion is that there is no clear path here. Some are just getter on with life and who can blame them. It's all advisory and seems to only apply to at risk groups, or at least be perceived to. People aren't daft, they're not going to self isolate or whatever for no reason.

We need either lock down or we just get on with it.

@TellItLikeItReallyIs

I know (studied it at uni) so I fail to see how hiding in small forts built out of bog roll and pasta is going to stop this.

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 15:10

@adiposegirl2

Which section would you apply then?

FloconDeNeige · 17/03/2020 15:11

~£20,000 fine for people ignoring the rules here in Switzerland.

dkanin · 17/03/2020 15:14

I think a lot of people won't. I know young people who are carrying on very much as normal and just outraged by the inconvenience. They don't seem to be thinking about the frail people who they are putting at risk. I know a young man who is furious his skiing holiday has been cancelled and took a journey across the country using public transport to visit his elderly parents to scrounge toilet roll from them!

wouldyouadamandeveit · 17/03/2020 15:18

My DS works in retail so has no choice but to go in. My DH is part of a small family run business, he has no choice but to work or the company goes under.

Neither of them have underlying health issues though, so I can only cling on the fact that even if they do catch the virus, it will be mild.

I don't see the point in telling pubs etc to close unless you're going to close the supermarkets or implement a one person per family rule and only let a couple of people in at a time. Just as much chance of someone spluttering on you in a queue there as you are anywhere.

BonnesVacances · 17/03/2020 15:20

I don't think many people will, but they'll be the ones spreading it between themselves so it's on their heads if they get it. The sensible ones who are taking precautions should hopefully come out of this unscathed.

adaline · 17/03/2020 15:21

I'm pretty sure the point is that supermarkets are essential whereas the pub isn't!

ZaZathecat · 17/03/2020 15:29

I would love to see some advice on having to use packed commuter trains/tubes to get to work at my (non-residential) job. It feels like the worst place to be for spreading infection, but I'm told I have to come in or take unpaid leave. It is perfectly feasible to work from home.

ZaZathecat · 17/03/2020 15:30

*non-essential

Connie222 · 17/03/2020 15:47

Having lived in London during the riots a few years ago, I’m scared that if we do go into lockdown that there will always be the idiots that decide to rebel/riot/loot. That scares me.
