Social distancing, reckon we'll comply??

Just wondering really. It's all so weird and confusing and on this site I have seen people ask if they should attend parties this weekend. No. We need to stay away from others unless necessary. I believe that if we don't comply the government will order the closure of venues and we may even end up ordered indoors. Come on people, we can DO this. We have social media, FaceTime etc. Think of the vulnerable.

The advice is really confusing. People still need to go to work and drop kids at school yet are discouraged from buying essential food items and going anywhere else, but yet the pubs and theatres can stay open if they feel the need to. I have an event coming up and as they won't cancel it, I will lose my money because the government are too afraid to risk upsetting businesses or have to compensate them.

Everything is motivated by money. You wait, the only people they will bail out is the large corporations that are dropping like flies while the rest of us suffer. They are cowards.

Connie222 · 17/03/2020 09:47

No. There are a lot of selfish and stupid people around. And I’m not speaking about the people who are scared of not working and needing to put rent.

I’m talking about the selfish idiots who were packing out the pub down the road last night and will continue to do so.

adaline · 17/03/2020 09:48

Perhaps one of the only times in modern society we'll see Darwinism in action.

But we won't. Because generally it's not the young who will die - it's the elderly and vulnerable who don't necessarily have the strength to tell people to keep away.

pigsDOfly · 17/03/2020 09:49

There seems to be a strong 'it won't happen to me' mentality, certainly on mn with people still talking about going to weddings and children's parties.

However, all the time children are going to school, sending them to a party, or any other activity, seems just more of the same.

I've been pretty much social distancing for a while now as I've been really unwell with an upper respiratory infection that's into its third week; thankfully it's on its way out now.

I think the government should start shutting pubs and restaurants. What's the point of telling people not to go to them when they remain open. Are people going to go to the pub and stand two metres away from any other person there. It's nonsense.

A great deal of the information is unclear; on the one hand we're told by the prime minister that all over 70s, the category I come in to, should self isolate, but following a question asked by Theresa May it seems that that only applies to over 70s with particular illnesses, all others should keep social distance. Or should we, as the information is still saying all over 70s should self isolate.

The government needs to give more orders instead of asking people to play nicely.

Its a government, bloody well govern.

BovaryX · 17/03/2020 09:49

It's the economy, stupid!

Er, do you have any comprehension about the economic impact of this? Any clue at all? The UK is already in the situation where more people claim benefits than pay taxes. I know you think all that is required is the government just open its printing press, but where do you imagine the financing is going to come from? Who is going to police a lockdown in a country where burglaries are not investigated?

Nquartz · 17/03/2020 09:49

No, one of my friends is talking about booking a cottage for a week at Easter & she's usually very sensible 🤦🏻‍♀️

Connie222 · 17/03/2020 09:50

And fwiw we’ve been social distancing for a while. No intention of seeing elderly parents and in-laws, dc off school/college. Luckily Dh can work at home though.

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 09:52

Yes I do.

The economic impact is why we're not doing a lockdown. We couldn't cope. The just in time, gig economy would collapse like a house of cards.

However it does make all these half measures somewhat pointless.

Seeline · 17/03/2020 09:52

Just spent half an hour on the phone trying to persuade my 80+ year old mum that the restrictions are in force now, not at the weekend. She and her mates have been arranging last get-togethers before they have to hide away a the weekend.

She is adamant that this is the case - I can't find it anywhere. She even went swimming as usual this morning FFS!!

Mrhodgeymaheg · 17/03/2020 09:54

i know you think all that is required is the government just open its printing press

That is exactly what they will do.

Moomin8 · 17/03/2020 09:54

Who is going to police a lockdown in a country where burglaries are not investigated?

The army. So I hear.

Connie222 · 17/03/2020 09:56

@Seeline I’ve just had to have a very frank conversation with my 84 year old dad. He thinks he’s invincible as he’s beaten 3 cancers in the past four years. I told him that if he gets it, he won’t be treated due to age and past conditions. He’ll be left to die.

His response was, “but if I get it, you’ll come and look after me”. Well, no. I’m pregnant. I’ve just got over pneumonia I had at Christmas. My priority is my health and that of my children.

Yet he still thinks it’s ok to pop to Asda everyday. I give up.

EarlyMorningStart · 17/03/2020 09:56

No, as a country I don’t think we’ll comply. Just reading the posts on MN - still going to yoga, still going to the gym, still meeting ‘mummy’ friends etc etc. People are incredibly stupid.
Everyone thinks it doesn’t apply to them.
I think we’ll be on a serious lockdown by next week.

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 09:57

But it's pointless...

Why call someone stupid for not doing something pointless?

ShowerTheHorse · 17/03/2020 09:57

Nope. A woman on my Facebook has announced her and her children all have temperatures a cough and sore throats but she’s sending them to school and doing the food shopping afterwards. I despair.

purpleboy · 17/03/2020 09:59

@bingbangbing you seem to be missing the point, it's not about going to work it's about limiting social activities.
There will be a huge economic fallout, there already is, but the guidelines are there to do as much as we can to reduce social contact.

HathorX · 17/03/2020 10:00

My mum's elderly neighbour sent her a "reassuring " email saying sorry she hadn't been in touch, she has picked up a cold but "don't worry it's definitely just a cold" and asked if my mum wanted anything as she was popping to the supermarket.

Twenty minutes later mum saw the old lady driving off to get her shopping.

We are all doomed.

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 10:01

And that will help because?

It won't. We're still in tube trains, air conditioned offices, bars, cafes, buses, taxis...

This is piecemeal nonsense.

adaline · 17/03/2020 10:01

But it's pointless...

It's not at all pointless if it's done properly. But the UK seem reluctant to anything serious about it - they just hope they can tell people to stay home and everyone will automatically comply like good little citizens Grin

bingbangbing · 17/03/2020 10:02

In fact, it's virtue signalling piecemeal nonsense by those who can afford to do it.

TiddyTid · 17/03/2020 10:05

There's a family where one member has CV who live in a tiny village. They posted on FB for others to be aware as they need to walk their dogs and to avoid them.

Shit for brains, I tell you.

I'm not sure if your being obviously obtuse or you just really don't get it.
The more social distancing we as a nation can do the less chance of spreading the virus.
If you work in a office, your office has a case of corona, if everyone in that office goes out to pubs, cafes, etc... your at risk of spreading the virus, if those people reduce their social activities there is much less chance for the virus to spread.

BovaryX · 17/03/2020 10:11

The army. So I hear.

Yep. And then the same people demanding a lockdown before they cancel yoga will be crying about the police state....
