I am - my role is difficult to do from home and our work needs to be going during this situation.

What about other people?

My firm are clueless. They are now running around like headless chickens. I'm currently on the bus going into work. Bus is usually packed but only about a third full.

Yes. I manage a residential home for adults with mental health needs. I already have staff self isolating, I have no idea how I am going to keep the home staffed safely going forward. I have several staff with long term health conditions and one that is pregnant who may now be off for 12 weeks. We are a team of 12. I could cry right now.

Yes - I work for a large insurance company and they did two test days last week, where everyone who could work from home did so. All went fine so from today, after Boris's announcement, all those will work from home. Those left in offices are to spread out as much as possible. Hand sanitizers and wipes for desks etc have been provided for the last few weeks. I think they're handling it pretty well with regular emails to all staff.

Work in pub/restaurant so going in but expect it'll be veerrry quiet. Don't expect I'll have work by the end of the week. 😞

Yes. I could work from home, but our top management aren't allowing it because they don't trust people to actually work. It's an open plan office of about 100 people (though funnily enough the two people who have made the decision that everyone needs to come in are the only two who have their own offices...). And we've run out of hand sanitiser.

Yes.

Although today I am being sent to work at a different location as part of our disaster recovery plan, and to minimise the risk of everyone in my role being off in the event of my office closing down.

Dp is WFH on the orders from his boss for the foreseeable future.

Yes. I work in a small college. Students still coming in, unless they have even a cold. I’m fairly isolated where my office is though.
DH is a scientist- can’t bring his lab home! They can’t WFH except for a few days.

ilovecakeandwine · 17/03/2020 07:45

The office I work in I'd say 80% could wfh so if some of us come in we have less risk .
I really hope this will start to be encouraged from today . I know profits are at stake but health is more important and provisions need to be in place .
Pubs / restaurants / non food shops I feel for but we are all going to feel the effect from today most definitely.

ilovecakeandwine · 17/03/2020 07:47

Just also wanted to say I want to carry on working to take my mind off all this . I wasn't worried until yesterday but you'd have to made of strong stuff not to be worried.

Not going to the office. "Soft close" was implemented yesterday and come 6pm on Wednesday the office will be locked / inaccessible (for security / insurance purposes)

We have no idea if our VPN will hold up, we have no idea how long this will go for, we have no idea what we'll do when schools close, it's a very vague plan Shock

  • to be fair my company have been very proactive about this and we've been advised if schools close then we'll still be able to WFH but senior management are aware it could be at reduced efficiency and we will be expected to "make up" hours etc

Well going in for the moment but think if schools are shut I may be laid off.

Irish schools shut so all orders on hold

Going in, been told decision to be made later this morning which seems totally stupid. Go in, potentially catch something only to be told to work from home!

DelurkingAJ · 17/03/2020 07:55

We had a text last night to WFH but although I have my laptop I don’t have a pile of useful stuff so I’m going in for the morning and then WFH indefinitely.

Yes I am, I work in a shelter for homeless people. We are short staffed because everyone with a cold is self isolating, as our serve users are very vulnerable.

DH has been told to WFH as much as possible. About 10% of his job is visiting sites in other parts of the country and he’s been told to drive instead of using public transport.

I work at in IT for the NHS

We regularly test wfh so this is a rehearsed situation for us.

We are all working from home, including IT support service desks.

Yes work in a care home admin role but staff need to be paid and families need to be updated daily so calls to be made etc. Will keep working until need to isolate or children are off.

I don't work anyway as I'm a SAHM but my husband is a chef so he can't work from home. He has no option but to go to work. It's all well and good saying work from home but what about those who can't do that

I was until we got told to self-isolate as DS has a cough.

I'm now going to WFH on reduced hours to fit around childcare. Once our IT guy sorts out my email that is...

I work in retail security. Luckily we work remotely but crimes gone right up so it'll be busy.

Thank you to all of you doing essential work like nursing, caring, teaching, police and fire service. I am very shocked though that some people who could work at home are still being expected to go in by their employers. That's immoral. The government guidance is clear.

My office is closed and we are all WFH. We are in London and apparently the virus has taken off here but that's not an excuse for any employer. It is odd that my son is still going into the centre of London for school though. At least he will get a seat on the tube!

I imagine a lot of the offices that aren’t allowing people to work from home yet are making sure that their remote access systems are beefed up to be able to cope with the increased demand.

I am off this week anyway, I expect that I will be collecting DH from work this afternoon with any necessary equipment that he needs to bring home and our dining room will be turned into his home office for the foreseeable future. I take my hat off to his employers who have been incredibly pragmatic and supportive of the situation.
