Yes @tobee and @Orangeblossom it’s sad isn’t it, although it feels silly to be upset in the grand scheme of things obviously people are in much worse situation but it’s only natural to feel this way.
Hopefully your DS will have a graduation at a later date @tobee
What have you got planned for your wee ones birthday @Orangeblossom?

My birthday is next week and DH and I had booked the day off work while DD is at nursery to go for afternoon tea which I was really looking forward to but im not so bothered about mine, just upset for my DDs in a few weeks! I’m sure the pregnancy hormones aren’t helping I’m just feeling emotional and sad that she won’t have a special birthday with all her friends before life turns upside down with the new baby arriving.

Lovely dog @Spudlet

VoyageInTheDark · 17/03/2020 16:16

Hi joining you all if that's ok.

I have been self isolating since Sunday as I have a cough, though otherwise well. I suffer with anxiety and OCD and starting to feel really panicky. Not worried that I have it, just don't like the lack of normality and general cabin fever.

I have a 2 year old at home to entertain too. Luckily we have a decent size garden for her to play in. Yesterday we looked for ladybirds, kicked a ball round and pretended to fly like birds :)

Orangeblossom78 · 17/03/2020 16:16

Well my wee one's 15 Grin not sure yet. Probably a takeaway from Wagamamas, something on Netflix and some obscure computer related thing he is into atm. He's quite laid back..

DC both report less kids at school today in both secondary and primary, around 8 off in each class. A teacher emailed saying not doing after school club as got DC home with symptoms.

Also Mothers day this weekend anyone any nice plans for that?

LaneBoy · 17/03/2020 16:16

Are you in any FB groups for the school closure home ed cally as I’m in one as a HE parent (to share ideas etc)

It’s honestly fine to not to do “proper” stuff though x

Metagoth · 17/03/2020 16:20

Thank you for this thread. I am a big ball of anxiety and keep bursting into tears. I am the type of person where social interaction is vital for my wellbeing and seeing threads about being in lock down for 7 or even 18 months makes me almost feel suicidal.

I worry about my partner and the effect on him and his job (he's admin for a university so I highly doubt he'll lose it!). I'm a care home manager and I have no idea how we will run services. The thought of not seeing my friends and family has left me bereft. I know it's for the best but I worry how they will be. I also worry about pubs and businesses shutting and the loss of jobs and peoples incomes.

I know though I can't be like this for all the time. I don't want me and my partner to suffer. I have already text friends to arrange video calls and am going to make a list of activities we can do indoors while also giving us space. I'm also going to make sure we get outdoors too for a walk or run where there is no one about.

Oh so glad we got another positive thinking thread

I tried to start another one as I didn't find this one till now 🤦‍♀️

"Well collated RapidRainbow! 🌟"

I just copied and lasted so can't take the credit and looks like @HonestlyItsFine took it a step further to identify sources Smile

HonestlyItsFine · 17/03/2020 16:22

It's only Tuesday and this week feels like it's gone on forever!
Last weekend feels like a lifetime ago, doesn't it?
But things are moving so fast in medicine/science behind the scenes. Great news about the vaccine- I pray it works!

HonestlyItsFine · 17/03/2020 16:25

Metagoth honestly, I think 18 months is just the very, very worst case scenario. There are plenty of clinical trials going re: treatment, so even if we don't have a cure or a vaccine, we'll hopefully have good treatment options that reduce the need for hospital stays etc.
Take it a week or a day at a time. Flowers

DianneWhatcock · 17/03/2020 16:26

I don't know if anyone has mentioned or suggested this

But if people are running low on stuff try your local small shops. I nipped in my local one just for a magazine and they had absolutely everything that's been running low,...loo roll, pasta, cleaning stuff and hand gel.

HonestlyItsFine · 17/03/2020 16:30

People have clocked onto local shops here. And milk and more now has a message saying stocks are running low :(

Metagoth · 17/03/2020 16:34

Thank you. I know really that from a mental health angle, they really couldn't isolate us for 18 months. I think I'm more emotional as we were due to get married on Friday but thankfully could postpone. I'm quite new to mumsnet but think I will stay in this thread. The good news stories have really cheered me up.

HonestlyItsFine · 17/03/2020 16:44

Metagoth what a shame about the wedding- glad you could postpone. It feels like life has been postponed a little bit at the moment, doesn't it?

DobbyTheHouseElk · 17/03/2020 16:49

Hi everyone, I don’t know if this has been posted above. But the National Trust is closing all properties as of this Friday. Tearoom shops houses etc.

BUT........

They are opening parklands and spaces FREE to everyone so we can walk and enjoy beauty and space. I personally think this is a amazing thing to do. Look up your local NT place and see what they are offering. They really understand mental health and how being outside helps us.

HonestlyItsFine · 17/03/2020 16:55

Oh how lovely of the NT. Sadly there's none near to me, but I do have a lot of fields. not too far away.

AssangesCat · 17/03/2020 17:10

I'm a regular visitor to Good News Network website for a boost, link here is to a page devoted to CV related good news:

www.goodnewsnetwork.org/10-positive-updates-on-the-covid-19-outbreaks-from-around-the-world/

I've sent them the link to the BBC story about the dog rescued by sizzling sausages so maybe we'll see that appear.

Thanks for this thread everyone - I'm feeling much, much better and speaking up when other people are doom and gloom.

Orangeblossom78 · 17/03/2020 17:11

I mentioned earlier my local council sports centre is open. Just had this email from them

Hello Sarah,

We understand that at this challenging time, taking care of ourselves and our loved ones is our number one priority, and keeping fit and active is a great way to do just that.

At Better, we all have a role to play as both staff and members to ensure we can stay fit, healthy and active.

If you are feeling well, then it's best to keep active, whether you like to run, swim or stretch at one of our Better centres across the UK - and we'll be happy to help you with any questions you may have.

We are working closely with public health authorities and all official updates from the government so that we can keep you up-to-date on what is happening - but as things are changing daily - please visit our website regularly for more information on any updates in your local community.

Remember: by ensuring to always wash your hands for 20 seconds, wipe down any equipment you may use (including any weights, mats etc) catch all coughs and sneezes in a tissue and bin them - and most importantly - being considerate of those around us - we will all help to keep each other protected.

Sport England states:

"...Being fit and healthy acts as a deterrent to most infections, it's crucial that members of the public continue to lead active lives throughout this period, whether that's using a local gym or walking or cycling, where it’s possible to do so...

...In every scenario, it’s clear that hand hygiene is critical and if you’re planning to go somewhere that involves using sports equipment, make sure you're thoroughly wiping it down before and after you use it"

Swimming is also a great way to keep active - whatever your age and ability! We're working closely with both Public Health England and the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) who state: "...it is generally safe to go swimming at this time. Water and the chlorine within swimming pools will help to kill the virus..."

So you can feel reassured and continue to enjoy swimming at your local Better centre.

We would like to remind all of our valued members that should you be feeling unwell, please do not visit your local Better centre.

Please follow government advice and visit the NHS website for more information - and all of us at Better wish you a speedy recovery.

For more information on how you can can take action to protect yourself and others - please visit our website by clicking on the link below.

Please help us to support as many members as we can...

Should you wish to contact our Customer Experience Team, please contact them via email or our contact us form -and they will be happy to assist you further.

For more information please visit the NHS and GOV.UK websites as well.
We will continue to keep you updated as the situation changes.

AssangesCat · 17/03/2020 17:12

If schools close here I'm thinking we'll be okay to go for long bike rides, hopefully whizzing along too fast to catch anything anyway. Pack a picnic and off we go.

AssangesCat · 17/03/2020 17:14

Like the swimming post! I was thinking could take the child swimming, it would be like dunking him in a vat of mild bleach for a while.

dappledsunshine · 17/03/2020 17:34

That's amazing dobby thanks for that- we are currently self isolating as ds1 has possible symptoms but we will definitely be making use when we can go out again.

Bloodybackpain · 17/03/2020 18:00

@AssangesCat I’m thinking bike rides too as and when the schools close. Me and husband run too, so we can run with kids on bikes. In fact we have some deserted ruins that are 5 miles away on mainly off paths, would be fab to build the kids up to cycling there!
Loving the NT announcement too.

TheChampagneGalop · 17/03/2020 18:01

Anyone got some reassuring words to spare? I live alone and am now self-isolating because I have developed a slight fever and a sore throat. I try to be calm but I have anxiety issues and I worry that I've got the virus and that I might have infected loved ones before I got symptoms. It doesn't help that many of my friends are really anxious so I have to reassure them!

gingerbreadslice · 17/03/2020 18:06

@TheChampagneGalop you'll be okay I know of a few people now who have caught it and they said they was fine, poorly but fine and they've recovered. And remember it's also cold and flu season so chances are it's just a cold I feel nervous too my son has started coughing today non stop but he's not been out since last Thursday so I'm hoping it's just normal and not the virus x

Noooblerooble · 17/03/2020 18:06

This thread is helping me so much. Thank you.

Thechampagne so sorry. No one can guarantee anything but even if you did infect anyone the likelihood is this will be mild for them. It is still statistically highly unlikely any of them will be seriously ill. Hopefully you can talk to them all now and they can all isolate themselves to be safe.

HonestlyItsFine · 17/03/2020 18:19

TheChampagneGalop, I have heard accounts of several people, including those in at risk groups, that it was no worse than a bad cold. Tom Hanks is 64 and apparently diabetic, and had very mild symptoms by all accounts. So even if it IS the virus, chances are it will be grotty for a few days only.
It would be nice to know for definite though, wouldn't it?!
