I would say a good month of eating twice a day (pasta, rice dishes) - ie no thrills just sustenance

OP posts:

think it's really selfish people who have months worth of supplies stored away

Nope, not necessarily. Haven't been panic buying. I'm not a prepper either, but I have a big chest freezer and always keep it well stocked. Always have loads of rice, pasta, oats etc. I've bought a few cartons of UHT milk and a few extra tins over the last few weeks (literally only a few) but generally shopping as normal. Nothing selfish about that.

DesdemonaRosa · 16/03/2020 15:37

Is that because the last 2 months they will be eating you?

Ha! They will have to because for the last two months they'll have no one to reach up onto the shelf for their kibble, or open their tins Grin

It's either eat us or starve, looking longingly at two months worth of food they cannot access!

DesdemonaRosa · 16/03/2020 15:40

I never used to but a couple of years back my mother moved in with me and is of the 'shop like there's a war coming' variety. Within the first few months I had to buy an extra freezer and install shelving in the garage to cope with the strain. Ever since then we've been running high stock levels.

Still, I had to buy medical grade santiser for a sick dog recently and had to pay through the nose for it, so we weren't quite as well prepared as it might seem Smile

TooManySocks · 16/03/2020 15:41

5/6 days; I just buy what I need every few days.

I refuse to panic buy or stock pile. If I take two of something, that might mean someone who needs it more goes without.

There was an elderly lady in Lidl this morning in tears because lots of stuff she needed was already gone; I helped her find substitutes and gave her my number in case she needed more help.

It breaks my heart that people's selfishness is causing these artificial and avoidable shortages.

bellinisurge · 16/03/2020 15:41

Built my range of stuff up over months and months. I also grow and preserve my own food so that would never make it to the shops anyway.

gamerchick · 16/03/2020 15:43

Except many of us preppers told 'normal' people that it was worth having a decent buffer and were told we are weird and paranoid and survivalist. Now were selfish

Indeed. We'll always get the blame Grin

I have around 3 months, but I've always got about that and have done for years. I'm not the reason the shelves are empty and like others, my veggie garden will be ready at the end of that.

GobOnAStick · 16/03/2020 15:45

I hope about 2-3 months, been stocking up. Will get more as much as we can until we are on lockdown.

dudsville · 16/03/2020 15:46

Ages, we always have a varied and stocked larder and freezers because we grow a lot of food.

BeyondMyWits · 16/03/2020 15:48

It depends how much rhubarb a person can eat... (luckily we have plenty of toilet roll!)

Rhubarb grows with great abundance in our garden, we have a shed load of it, it produces through to end of May. I have in the past bartered it for eggs from a neighbour too. Rhubarb as currency... hmmm...

AParallelUniverse · 16/03/2020 15:56

A couple of months. I have a big supply of dried lentils and chapati flour. Might get a bit boring. But we wouldn't starve.

bellinisurge · 16/03/2020 15:57

Generally posters have sussed out the difference between prepping and panicking. Six months ago, when I bought three tins instead of mascara, I fail to see how that affected people's behaviour now. Other than the fun they might have had back then scoffing at me for being insufficiently groomed.

Bagelsandbrie · 16/03/2020 15:59

About 5 days at a push. I can’t stand eating dried stuff or tinned things. Really hate it. I mean I can have the odd tin or dried whatever but I love fresh bread, fruit and veg. I am not stockpiling and will still go the shops every few days.

Cooper88 · 16/03/2020 16:01

I'm not doing food shop til the middle of the week, at a push I reckon the food in the cupboard might last 3 days. We have run the cupboards right down for various reasons.

MintySpud · 16/03/2020 16:03

About two days. Then DH would riot when the salad cream ran out.

TooManyCats88 · 16/03/2020 16:04

Well that's fine as long as you are able to and the stuff is there for you to buy.

. Fresh bread, fruit and veg is good if it is available and you are well enough and allowed to go out and get it. That's an awful lot to take for granted at the moment. You might have to manage with tinned, dried, and frozen stuff or go hungry.

Poppydaisies · 16/03/2020 16:05

About 3-4 weeks. But that would be lots of frozen food, tins, rice, pasta, nuts etc. So not very exciting meals. But we'd survive that long food wise.

GinisLife · 16/03/2020 16:05

Could probably do 3 weeks if I was careful. I could stock Tesco with pasta, beans and tinned tomatoes- but contrary to what @1981 is saying it's because they've been bought over a couple of years because I could never see the back of the cupboard so rather than keep it tidy I'd just buy new. Had a new kitchen recently so said cupboards were emptied. I was a bit shocked at the amount of tinned tomatoes and tuna.

itsgettingweird · 16/03/2020 16:07

Probably 2 weeks of decent meals and then an extra week of emptying everything out but not proper meals!

bellinisurge · 16/03/2020 16:09

Also love fresh fruit and veg. That's why I grow a bit of my own. And preserve what I can't eat. And invested in a breadmaker to enjoy fresh bread if I can't be arsed making it.
Personally, if we go on lockdown, I would rather be at home , playing with my daughter rather than standing in a queue to get into a supermarket like they are in a Italy right now to get my fresh stuff.

BlancheDuBlah · 16/03/2020 16:09

I had the misfortune to be behind an utter bellend in a queue today speculating how well slimming clubs are going to do out of people once it's over, because they 'd just been scoffing constantly and will want to lose weight shortly afterwards.

I don't think it would ever have occurred in his dim little mind just how many people in these shitty times can't afford to hoard nevermind gain weight through eating their supplies in this me me fucking me post-Brexit Boris voting shite world.

Bagelsandbrie · 16/03/2020 16:10

But that’s the thing isn’t it - even in Italy where it’s hell on earth people are still allowed out to shop every few days. It’s absolutely pointless buying 200 days worth of tins and dried goods. Yes some is important - 7 to 10 days worth for total isolation - but any more than that is just hysterical and panic buying.

MovinOnUp · 16/03/2020 16:10

I have about 5/6 weeks worth.
But I have panic bought fuck all.

I always have more than a months worth of supplies and do a huge restock of tinned and dry goods in January, Which I did this year as I do every year.

Not selfish, Just organised.
I spent a few years on Universal Credit and lived in actual fear of no money coming in, So I always had a month's worth of food/toiletries in the house to alleviate that fear.

happytobeheresparkl · 16/03/2020 16:11

Family of seven two weeks but the last week would be limited meals.

Designerenvy · 16/03/2020 16:12

2 weeks at a stretch

BlancheDuBlah · 16/03/2020 16:12

Didn't mean to derail OP, thread just reminded me of the twat
