I would say a good month of eating twice a day (pasta, rice dishes) - ie no thrills just sustenance

OP posts:
NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 16/03/2020 17:38

I'm shocked at how many people have 3 weeks + worth of food!

I'm shocked how many people don't. I mean not truly, I understand that finances mean people are living hand to mouth.

But there are also people on here who don't seem hard up but don't have a habit of accumulating a surplus of non perishables. To me it's just unthinkable not to buy pasta or rice or flour in huge sacks, it's better value

JayDot500 · 16/03/2020 17:40

Probably around a month with a lot of complaints about corned beef towards the end Grin

I've had to go into isolation today as my son has a viral infection (with no testing there is no way to know what it is), so I have defrosted some prawns for tomorrows dinner. I wish I had more frozen onions and other veg though 😭

Takeyourfaceoff · 16/03/2020 17:41

If it’s just dd and me we could probably do around 2 months. With dh home too, probably 6 weeks max. Have enough dog food for about 2 months too.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 16/03/2020 17:42

A 25kg bag of flour lasts me just under 6 months and costs £30. That's bread for a family of 4.

nokidshere · 16/03/2020 17:46

Fridge would be empty in about 3 days and we could maybe last 2 weeks on tinned and dried goods if we had to. 4 adults here now that the uni students have been sent home

Beau20 · 16/03/2020 18:24

@NoIDontWatchLoveIsland well that would be rude of you to insinuate people who live week to week are 'poor'. We do just fine, nothing to do with affording it AND we buy large sacks. However PROPER fresh meals (not rice and beans rations) fresh meet etc lasts us 2 weeks tops. Also lack of freezer/fridge/cupboard space may also mean week to week shopping 🤦🏼‍♀️

Buying large sacks of things because it's cheaper - not selfish.

Panic buying and stockpiling right now. Fucking selfish and stupid.

Beau20 · 16/03/2020 18:25

Meet 😂

**meat (before the spelling police start)

ViciousJackdaw · 16/03/2020 18:44

Because so many people are 'just managing'. Not everyone can realistically afford to spend £30 on flour in one go - that's some people's budget for a fortnight. It doesn't matter how good the savings are, it's simply too much for some people to shell out.

Others do not have the space for huge sacks, people like me with impaired mobility are not able to manage them.

I've got around two weeks worth of decent meals and a further weeks worth of beans/lentils/oats.

idontlike789 · 16/03/2020 18:54

About 2 weeks at a push , I've enough bread, milk toilet rolls till Friday. Tins / frozen food till next week but it'll be a bit shit .

Igotthemheavyboobs · 16/03/2020 18:56

About a month but it would be weird mixes toward the middle/end.

mumme111 · 16/03/2020 19:01

About 3 days we live week to week (very low wage) x

RosesandIris · 16/03/2020 19:02

Probably a week at the most. Eating beans and marmalade combos.

ScrimpshawTheSecond · 16/03/2020 19:03

Yes, I appreciate I'm privileged to be able to buy a sack of flour. I'm not saying everyone can or would.

I've also had times in my life when I lived on rice and lentils and nothing else for weeks. And know the feeling when the rice runs out. Hence probably my tendency to stock well up now that I can.

RosesandIris · 16/03/2020 19:05

This is when you see the value of keeping chickens and growing your own veg/ keeping a goat.

Polkadotpjs · 16/03/2020 19:06

About a week before eating strange things like tinned grapefruit and noodles

AnotherMurkyDay · 16/03/2020 19:06

14 days at a push. But short on loo roll for that though. My kids might have to eat some of the long life stuff they normally turn their noses up at. We are on day 2 of the 7 days which will now be 14 days so just as well really!

LoonyLunaLoo · 16/03/2020 19:40

I’ve planned for 2 weeks as that’s the length of self isolation. But we could eek it out for 3 weeks. The main issue would be fresh fruit, vegetables and meat as we only have a small freezer.

1981m · 16/03/2020 19:54

I am not moaning about people who have put a little away over the last year I am talking about people who have deliberately over shopped since this started and certainly those who have panic brought. It's incredibly selfish.

1981m · 16/03/2020 20:01

Bellingsurge- your minor inconvenience is someone else's, probably someone elderly, disaster as you have too much food.

Picasso31 · 16/03/2020 20:34

Four weeks for the people. Might be limited menu towards the end. Live very rurally with no food deliveries, and high up, so snow risk in the winter. Still have good winter stocks which I haven't let run down as normally would start doing by now.

Dogs are a problem though (have 5, one is a grain allergic St. Bernard who is fed rice, veg and raw meat, at least 1kg a day of meat plus 1kg between the 4 others). No way I can store 2 weeks of meat for the dogs.... maybe they can catch their own rabbit or pheasant? Cats are pretty self sufficient, could give dogs hunting lessons.

gamerchick · 16/03/2020 20:43

What on earth are you blibbiling on about? Hmm

Salene · 16/03/2020 20:55

Quite a while but would be random stuff we would be eating. I bulk buy in Costco loads of things like toilet roll/washing powder/coffee / cereal/ butter / beans / crisps etc

And I did a big Costco shop in January , and I plan ahead with online delivery so have some dates in April booked.

managedmis · 16/03/2020 20:56

8 weeks I reckon

DeRigueurMortis · 16/03/2020 20:59

4 weeks at a push I think but towards the tail end we'd be eating some "interesting" meals.

Realistically I've probably got enough for 3 weeks.

Thelnebriati · 16/03/2020 21:03

3 months now since DS1 treated himself to a 1 month pack of military rations. I might do an unboxing video and eat them all on camera for your entertainment, and feed him the beans.
