Supermarket madness

katseyes7 · 16/03/2020 13:11

l work on a checkout in a very large supermarket.
This past few days has really opened my eyes to how people behave under pressure.
We've been told to restrict certain items - loo rolls, handwash, sanitiser gel (no point, we don't have any) tinned veg, dry pasta, rice, bottled water, bleach, anti bac spray and wipes, etc.

Most people are understanding. However....

On Friday, l had a couple at my till doing a big weekly shop. They had a huge amount of fresh and frozen vegetables - fine, you're allowed those. Until l said that they could only have five tins of veg. They had a variety, tinned tomatoes, sweetcorn, beans, etc. The man actually kicked off that he couldn't have more than five tins of beans. A grown man, throwing a tantrum over tins of beans.
l don't think it occurs to people that it tends to be (in my experience, this may depend on the location) older people who buy tinned veg - it not perishable, and most older people don't have the large fridge freezer facilities that younger people tend to.
Also, the restrictions on tinned veg, pasta, etc are impacting on the foodbank donations.

Yesterday l told a man he couldn't have two multipacks of bottled water (he had 2 x 6 2litre bottles). Our current 'rule' is one multipack, or 5 large bottles. l scanned one and put it in the trolley our supervisor was using for 'confiscated' items, leaving him with the one he had in his own trolley. He paid for his shopping, l started serving the customer behind him. Whereupon as he walked past the 'contraband' (as we've been jokingly calling it) trolley, took out the pack l'd taken from him, and put it in his own trolley!. He hadn't paid for the water! l went over to him, took it out of his trolley, and said "You haven't paid for this, l told you, you're only allowed one." He got quite aggressive and shouted "Why?!" in my face.
Fortunately the lady who was behind him backed me up, and also told my supervisor what had happened. What l should have said to him was "You can either put that back, or we can call the police" but l didn't think of that at the time.

One of my colleagues is a young (19) Asian girl. She's very personable and professional, working her way through university. She's very good with customers. One man actually called her a 'Paki'. Another was abusing her when she told him he couldn't have all of his items as they were restricted. Fortunately the young lad on the till next to her (who is also a student), a big rugby player type lad, turned and said to the man "Listen, mate, pack it in. You wouldn't talk to me like that." The customer didn't respond, but stopped shouting at her.

We got a small delivery of toilet rolls on Friday. One of our managers noticed one woman had six multipacks in her trolley, and took the 'extras' from her.
Yesterday l served a lovely older couple who told me that they're running short on loo roll, the lady has bowel cancer and is waiting for surgery. As she put it, "When l need to go, l need to go, and l need toilet roll."
l don't know if the people who are stockpiling (or trying to) actually think about the implications of what they're doing, or whether they genuinely believe they're more entitled than others.

l'm prepared to get flamed for posting this, but it's really made me realise how this is making some people behave. Maybe it's how they normally behave, and this situation is just making it more obvious.
Time will tell, no doubt.

People are very selfish and don’t think of the impact their actions have on others

Dh drives disabled children and elderly people to care centres and we can’t find any sanitiser for him to use because he has to lift them up onto seats and wheelchairs and they are in the ‘at risk’ group. Sad

userxx · 16/03/2020 15:36

It seems behaving like a massive twat is spreading faster than the bloody virus.

This with bells on.

Hermanhessescat · 16/03/2020 15:39

No zoflora or dettol round here to the person suggesting I make my own. Nor toilet roll, antibac spray...
Gloves make no difference as you can still transfer the virus with them and you're less likely to handwash as thoroughly due to complacency. Maybe people shouldn't bulk buy, simple as Hmm..
And as for not needing to clean my hands out and about, I might just want to clean them after using a grubby supermarket trolley maybe ?

KatherineJaneway · 16/03/2020 15:43

The problem is that people kick off at retail staff as they know there will be no comeback. They are a ‘safe’ punching bag. You have to be polite and nice however rude they are or your risk losing your job. Security are there but you are still shouted at, called names with no recourse.

MrsKingfisher · 16/03/2020 15:54

Why aren't supermarkets being tougher on abusive behaviour, putting signs up at checkout reiterating the 5 item rule and stating that anyone who abuses a staff member will not be served. I haven't bought anything extra I don't feel I need to!

InFiveMins · 16/03/2020 15:57

Good post OP, and I agree with you entirely.

People are acting like wild animals. I went to buy a bottle of wine (I live pretty much next door to a supermarket) on Saturday night and the young lady serving me on the till was being abused by a middle aged couple because she wouldn't allow them to buy about 15 packs of pasta which they had simply taken off the shelf still in its cardboard box. They were furious.

People just don't care.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 16/03/2020 16:02

@GameSetMatch don’t be annoyed with the preppers! They already had a stock of whatever cupboard items they use and have been using that up rather than playing supermarket sweep. Hence I was able to give my friend a pack of 9 loo rolls this morning when she said she couldn’t find any.

FlamingoAndJohn · 16/03/2020 16:07

What make me ‘laugh’ about all this is the bullshit about ‘blitz spirit’ and how the British can get through this.
It goes right out if the window

stickerqueen · 16/03/2020 16:13

Ive not been able to get pasta or loo roll. Didn't come in my order on the weekend and no shop have any it's annoying. down to our last loo roll now and no pasta left argghh

mynameisMrG · 16/03/2020 16:16

A shop worker told me that she’s heard people without children were bulk buying nappies and formula and selling them for twice the price on eBay. Lowest form of human if this is true.

SeasonallySnowyPeasant · 16/03/2020 16:16

I went to Asda to do a normal food shop at lunchtime and it was absolutely crazy. Hardly any toiletries at all, hardly any meat, cereal, tins, no rice, hand wash, loo rolls or pasta and huge queues at the checkouts. The man at the checkout said they have stock of most things but can’t get it on the shelves fast enough.

Hermanhessescat · 16/03/2020 16:28

I was told by a staff member in store that sainsbos have 4 deliveries a day of toilet roll but that it's gone in minutes. People are literally buying 20 rolls at a time..we are onto our last 2 in a house of 4 Blush

Witchend · 16/03/2020 16:31

5 tins of vegetables seems a bit random.

For one person on their own it might seem a lot, but we're a family of 5. I don't use much tinned veg-only really sweetcorn, tinned tomatoes or baked beans.
But I could easily buy more than that- I usually buy tomatoes and baked beans in multipacks of 4, sweetcorn I'll often get in a multipack of 3. That wouldn't be stockpiling, just a standard shop.

And what about frozen veg, is that included too? If not, why tinned and not frozen?

DinosApple · 16/03/2020 16:42

I'm surprised by bottled water being panic bought, what's going to happen to tap water Confused

The way people behave to shop staff is outrageous. There is literally only a shortage of toilet paper because panic buyers have made it so. It's infuriating.

My current plan for if/when we run out of bog roll kind of a DIY bidet. Wash bum over toilet with warm water from a jug, soap and rinse. Dry on a flannel (bung that to wash). Wash hands thoroughly.
It's not ideal, easy or pleasant, but it would do.

peekaboob · 16/03/2020 16:45

My local Tesco. I can't get baby wipes anywhere!

People are absolutely awful. Now is the time to check in with elderly / disabled neighbours and just check they need anything.

The “5 tins” rule seems random though, are you sure it wasn’t meant to be 5 tins of each item? Tesco has restricted to 2 tins of tomatoes, 3 sweet corn etc when I did an online shop but no restriction to the total number of tins.

katmarie · 16/03/2020 16:51

I went to Lidl this morning, early, after dropping DS at nursery. It wasn't too bad, although there were no chopped tomatoes, no toilet paper, and I got the last 2 boxes of eggs. I also picked up six bottles of milk, which is what I buy every monday, and the checkout guy had to make sure I was allowed to have them, which I was apparently. I was at the checkout and a woman who had just been through one of the other tills came over and kicked off at the guy on my till for allowing me to buy six bottles of milk when she'd only been allowed to buy 5 bottles of lemonade. I really thought things were going to get nasty. The atmosphere was definitely quite tense in there today, and the guy on my till was telling me it had been a nightmare over the weekend. I really feel for the staff in these shops.

BarkandCheese · 16/03/2020 16:56

I always do my shopping early on Monday morning because it’s quite and I’m free. Well it’s normally quite, when I arrived in Sainsbury’s at 8.30am it was busier than normal, half an hour later it was like a Saturday afternoon. I didn’t see too much lunacy, but there was one man with his arms full of kitchen roll. I hope he wasn’t planning on using it in place of loo roll, if he flushes it he’s got a good chance of blocking his toilet.

The thing about the spirit of the blitz is it’s only one side of the story. Crime went up in London in the darkness of the blackouts and the chaos of the raids, but it wasn’t reported because the government were afraid of people losing moral. Arseholes are arseholes, they were in 1942 and they are now.

pollysproggle · 16/03/2020 16:58

I could understand panic buying if you'd genuinely find yourself alone and without things if you had to self quarantine. If you had very little support in the form of friends and family, lived remotely, disabled etc
What people are doing in shops is vile and I've seen first hand staff being verbally abused this week. Most of these people are not the above mentioned, just selfish.

The limited buying is a great idea however... my mum called today. She had taken a friend to Aldi to do a shop at 8am this morning as friend doesn't have a car.
Her friend had put her shopping first and paid for it but when it came to my mums shopping the checkout assistant wouldn't let her buy the same items that her friend had as they were together!!
My mum had two milk and two loaves as did her friend and assistant said no as they were together! Paying separately with different cards. Manager called and she was eventually allowed to buy the shopping.
It made me think about what will happen when we will inevitably be shopping for others too because they can't do it themselves.

ALongHardWinter · 16/03/2020 18:05

purpleboy My friend suggested that to me but as the poster after you pointed out,it's still no use if the shop that the order is coming from has no toilet rolls!

ALongHardWinter · 16/03/2020 18:12

BarkandCheese Re. your comment about the man loaded up with kitchen rolls,I am sure that there are people who are using kitchen roll as toilet roll! In several of the shops I looked in for toilet rolls over the last week, the staff have been filling up the space where the the toilet rolls were with kitchen rolls. I rather get the impression that some customers, judging by the amount of them they are buying, are indeed using them as toilet rolls!

FlamingoAndJohn · 16/03/2020 18:51

There will be a lot of blocked toilets soon if people are using kitchen towels.

As I’ve said on other threads, consider using www.milkandmore.co.uk/ they still have some toilet roll left.

Here is a £5 code. RPW8Z7

SallyLovesCheese · 16/03/2020 22:04

OP, I hope the young woman who was racially abused refused to serve that customer. No-one deserves that, ever. Refusing to serve is about the only thing retail staff can do.

I haven't personally seen behaviour like this around where I live but I can well imagine it, having previously worked in retail.

Big thanks to all of you currently working in shops and having these idiots to deal with. Those of us who are nicer appreciate you!

Polkadotpjs · 16/03/2020 22:13

Is anyone else daydreaming about what they'd say to these entitled idiots. Yo the people kicking off about having their 12 packs pasta taken I'd have loved to place them on the conveyer for the next person to buy and see how they like it. I'm disappointed in how selfish people can be. Be kind -my arse.

LimitIsUp · 16/03/2020 23:57

I haven't been to the supermarket for a fortnight - I have online deliveries from Waitrose. Their stock availability seems to be a bit better than what a lot of you are reporting. Inevitably I have had some missing items, but it's not too many
