Limited to 2 tins!

I get people are stockpiling but come on.

There's 7 of us. How can I make meals when I'm only allowed to order 2 tins of tomatoes in my weekly shop?!

Probably have to water them down a little bit. It's not ideal at all is it. They have not dealt with this panic buying well at all. Now the toilet rolls gone the baby wipes are going. So soon our babies will be out of things they need.

I really hope this gets sorted soon 😔

Bulbosaur · 16/03/2020 10:13

But 2 tins watered down will barely do for one meal, what about the other 6 meals?

And lunches if schools shut

I'm starting to get really stressed about this now.

My neighbour said she's running out of nappies and hasn't been able to get any :(

Baby wipes - you can make your own easily out of an old sheet or fleece or blanket. Just do them on a hot wash.

excitedmumtobe87 · 16/03/2020 10:15

Can you order a four-pack of tomatoes? Or a couple of jars or passata? Two tins wouldn’t last us a week.

Hugglespuffed · 16/03/2020 10:16

I personally would try a couple of shops and get them. Just buy enough for what you need.

excitedmumtobe87 · 16/03/2020 10:16

Or some purée to bulk it up if you have to water it down.

I am totally against panic but two tins is unfair when other shops allow five multipacks of toilet roll. Should be one of those as a limit! And maybe five tins.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/03/2020 10:17

Try more than one shop or go in with someone else and each buy 2 separately

MigginsMrs · 16/03/2020 10:17

Just go to some shops and buy more

lubeybooby · 16/03/2020 10:17

re: nappies, time to switch to re-useables. Also there's loads on amazon (disposables)

midgebabe · 16/03/2020 10:17

Use something other than tomatoes in the other meals.
Get tomato purée
This is a rather exceptional situation, if the only sacrifice you have to make is using gravy instead of tomatoes....

MigginsMrs · 16/03/2020 10:17

Morrisons had lots of tinned toms this morning. I bought a couple of tins. Plus you surely don’t eat them for every meal.

sneakythecat49 · 16/03/2020 10:18

Places like Poundland, b&m bargains have been great for tinned stuff. People seem to be forgetting about these stores round here

Flimflamfloogety · 16/03/2020 10:19

Can you not get fresh tomatoes and blend these to make a sauce? You could make batches of sauce and freeze it

Absentwomen · 16/03/2020 10:19

Buy tomato puree, stock cubes, cornflour and flesh out the tinned tomatoes.

Farmfoods is fully stocked though. Certainly in our area.

ACoupleofPeaches · 16/03/2020 10:19

Buy tomatoes and make some up to freeze?

sneakythecat49 · 16/03/2020 10:20

Think of all the people who will be acquainted with fray bentos pies, they're lovely 😀

SunshineAvenue · 16/03/2020 10:21

Jars, fresh, puree. Make other meals? Soups are cheap if money is an issue, bulk out with lentils, split peas, beans, rice or dare I say it pasta.

Drycoughadviceujuju · 16/03/2020 10:36

I can make a spaghetti bolognese for 4 people with one tin of tomatoes. I put mince, Peppers, mushrooms, onions, tinned tomatoes and a beef stock cube in and cook it all and serve with spaghetti. So two tins should be ok for your family. I do agree though you need 4 really. It's much harder for larger families to be limited x

ifonly4 · 16/03/2020 10:42

I've been to a large Tescos this morning. Did a shop for my Mum and us, it was subtotalled for Mum's element but all on one receipt. They've let me buy six cans tuna and three cans of baked beans, no one queried it.

Might be worth visiting Lidl if you have one. Our nearest has been better stocked than Tescos.

Agree, if you've got other incredients to add (mince, onions, peppers, sweetcorn, tuna) one can tomatoes will serve four people,

RoseMartha · 16/03/2020 10:50

I either pop to another shop or buy fresh tomato's to use

Bulbosaur · 16/03/2020 10:51

I'm doing an online shop as

A) I don't drive
B) social distancing
C) I pay monthly for a delivery pass, if I go to the shop I have to pay for taxis (am on low income)

There are no multipacks available. There's nothing available really. I've had to get 2 tins of their most expensive tomatoes

Potatoes?

They dont seem to be limited and will keep for ages if in the dark and stored properly

tinybluerose · 16/03/2020 10:57

Have you looked at amazon grocery?

PhantomErik · 16/03/2020 11:00

I really feel for you, it's a nightmare! Have you searched tomato puree? It's usually around 50p a tube & tastes lovely & rich. Also tins of ratatouille make a great pasta sauce.

I was limited to 4 cartons of soya milk when I usually buy 8 at a time. I'm also buying for my elderly parents so we only get 2 each this time. I'll either try another branch or go again tomorrow but I don't want to shop daily.

Much more difficult if you're only shopping online.
