I get people are stockpiling but come on.

There's 7 of us. How can I make meals when I'm only allowed to order 2 tins of tomatoes in my weekly shop?!

Try tomato powder or purée.
There’s plenty of fresh produce on the shelves. Buy fresh tomatoes. Stew them up and freeze in portions.

RuffleCrow · 16/03/2020 11:08

Buy tomato puree to pad it out

RuffleCrow · 16/03/2020 11:12

Oops just saw that. I guess we'll just have to get creative.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/03/2020 11:14

Can you ask on social media if any friends/family could get them for you?

If I saw a request from someone more in need than me I'd be happy to help.

I didn't shop over the weekend but went to Asda this morning, which was a waste of time as they had run out of just about everything on my list.

But what I did get was 4 tins for a pound of KTC? brand tinned tomatoes (the ones in the Asian foods aisle that also has tinned pulses) - they didn't have any at all in the normal canned veg and soup aisle.

JKScot4 · 16/03/2020 11:16

Time to start growing!! Tomatoes and plenty other veg are fast growing.

BarbaraofSeville · 16/03/2020 11:30

Yes, crack on with it OP, and you'll have enough tomatoes to feed your family by the end of the week.

I'm always a bit Hmm at the grow your own suggestion, because tbh, it takes considerable amount of time, luck and money for it to work and unless the OP is already a skilled gardener, with a suitable plot, the time to put the required effort in, luck with the weather and the money for soil, greenhouse or substitute etc, the chances of her growing enough to feed her family are quite low.

Gardening - spending hundreds of pounds and hours to save a few tens of pounds on vegetables.

JKScot4 · 16/03/2020 11:37

@barbara
You don’t need a sizeable plot, potato barrels, tomatoes, strawberries etc can be in hanging baskets, no need for £100s, it’s a big misconception that grow your own is costly.
I suggested it partly in jest but realistically maybe ppl will start to think about their food sources instead of rampaging through supermarkets or sitting on a laptop.

YgritteSnow · 16/03/2020 11:46

I'm buying big pots and compost tomorrow and planting up various veg. I used to do it all the time as I don't have a garden just a roof terrace. You do not need to be a skilled gardener to grow a bit of veg. If I can, anyone can.

Can get nappies on Amazon.. Ours arrived in 2 days with prime.
Only allowed one paracetamol / ibrophen/ aspirin product here... I was trying to buy 1 bottle of baby calpol for the 2 year old and 1 box of paracetamol so not exactly panic buying and simply as I've run out of the paracetamol - I suffer from back pain and headaches both of which have flared up atm and the wee one is getting his second molars... He got the calpol. But it's bad that it's reached that point.

pigdogridesagain · 16/03/2020 11:55

Order fresh ones peel and chop them, hey presto chopped toms without the tins 🙄

HeresMe · 16/03/2020 12:08

If there is 7 of you surely someone can pop to the shops.

excitedmumtobe87 · 16/03/2020 12:13

Oh no. I’m guessing that store must be running very low if everything else is out then and that’s why there’s only two tins allowed. Do they have fresh tomatoes? Work well for pasta sauce, curry, chilli etc. Red peppers? Either jarred or fresh... they make a lovely sweet sauce used alone it mixed with tomatoes.

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 16/03/2020 12:19

There seems to be a fair amount of Passata I'm using that with one tin of Tom's to make them go further.
Thanks s drives him how many meals I use them for.
For example I'm having burritos tonight with blackbeans in tomato sauce!

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 16/03/2020 12:22

Okay so no purée or Passat a - Tomato juice? Ketchup at a push?

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 16/03/2020 12:27

I threw in some chopped up cherry tomatoes into my bolognese last night, I don't peel them and it tasted lovely. Can you get some fresh tomatoes?

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 16/03/2020 12:28

Do they have any sun-dried tomatoes? That might be better than ketchup.

Moomin8 · 16/03/2020 12:31

If people were sensible and didn't behave so selfishly, shops wouldn't need to do this.

Elouera · 16/03/2020 12:36

Look up other recipes that don't need more than 2 tins of tomatoes. Legumes, beans etc? Can you still get fresh tomatoes and add those to the recipe? Ketchup?

Mrsm010918 · 16/03/2020 15:02

Amazon is my best friend right now for nappies and bulk packs of things.

Moomin8 · 16/03/2020 23:24

Consider using cloth nappies and cheeky wipes. They really aren't any more work than disposables.

CatBatCat · 16/03/2020 23:27

Do you have to have tomatoes for every meal?

PickAChew · 16/03/2020 23:28

Yeah, plant your own tomatoes and, weather permitting, you might have some ripe ones by July.

Curious78 · 17/03/2020 00:02

Yes, a limit of two tins is an inconvenience to a large family but it's about time more stringent measures were put into place by supermarkets if I'm honest. Even a limit of 5 of the same item is excessive. I'd much rather see x5 families benefiting from 10 items than x2 families bagging 5 each. Use the opportunity to try something new or different to your usual meals.
