If we lockdown, is outside exercise allowed?

I’m interested to understand what’s allowed and not in places where lockdown has been implemented. Reading about Spain and it says people are to be allowed out ‘for emergencies, to buy food, or for work’. What’s the reality of how it’s policed, how would they know you were going, and if you wanted to go for a bike ride, really what’s the risk - given that you wouldn’t come into contact with anyone. And you could just say you were going to work. I do cycle to work by the way so that could be true. And my husband runs to work a few days a week.

From the NHS on isolation.

If we lockdown, is outside exercise allowed?
RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 15/03/2020 20:17

I do wonder how I'll go out to simply buy food.
I'm a lp and ds is too young for me to leave alone. It would take me well over an hr to get somewhere to buy food and get back because I don't drive.

The rules for isolating yourself when you have symptoms may not be the same as if/when we get put into lockdown.

Self isolation doesn't allow shopping, walks, dog walking, etc.

Lock down for people who are well will have to be different in some ways as everyone still has to eat.

joystir59 · 15/03/2020 20:18

I will have to walk our JRT because he will probably eat us alive by end of day 3 if kept indoors

sassbott · 15/03/2020 20:22

Self isolation is if you have symptoms that have been outlined. No outside. For exercise even. That is very clear.

Lockdown is limited movement if you are well. So people going to essential jobs. Supermarket / dr/ pharmacy trip. Get out, do what you need. Get home.

It’s pretty straightforward and I don’t understand the confusion.

How do you go food shopping if you're a single parent with young kids?

puds11 · 15/03/2020 20:25

Yeah it’s definitely not going for a leisurely jog around the block.

letmeinthroughyourwindow · 15/03/2020 20:29

"How do you go food shopping if you're a single parent with young kids?"

Online.

DoctorNicoleWatterson · 15/03/2020 20:30

This question was just asked on the ITV news, the answer was no, you wouldn't be allowed to go out for a jog. They suggested youtube exercise videos instead.

TwelveIslands · 15/03/2020 20:30

It probably seems daft but if people see someone else out and about having a walk then everyone is going to start doing it. In a rural area, someone from town might think, oh I'll go to that rural area for a walk, and so on.

RaininSummer · 15/03/2020 20:39

I think the internet is likely to be very unreliable with loads of households working from home and/or strwming netfix etc so dont rely on it for entertainment .

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 15/03/2020 20:42

What if you can't afford the cost of online? My money is budgeted to the last penny unfortunately.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 15/03/2020 20:43

I'm happy to use online resources for exercise but shopping online is way out of my affordability.

damnthatanxiety · 15/03/2020 20:44

yes, you can take your dog out for their toileting needs. You may be expected to limit the walks and not be out for hours day but as with horses and other animals, you will not be arrested for looking after your dog. This isn't supposed to be punitive. It's about reducing risk, not hermetically sealing off the world.

FallonSwift · 15/03/2020 20:48

We've got family in Spain and the police are out in patrol cars telling people on beaches, walking and cycling to pack up and go home - if you don't comply then you get fined.

LeeMiller · 15/03/2020 20:48

In Italy. Walking dog, solo jog or walk is ok near home. Lots of parks, beaches, river paths and popular walking areas locally have been shut to avoid too many people were going there at once. According to FB, police in our area were telling people that within 500m of home is fine, further afield no.

LeeMiller · 15/03/2020 20:53

Lots of local initiatives to deliver food to people who can't get to the shops or manage online orders, and lots of smaller shops will deliver as well as supermarkets (impossible to get a slot), you can phone or text them too. Same for pharmacies.

I person per family goes shopping. Only two people max allowed in a car (and only for specific, valid reasons), the passenger has to sit back seat furthest from the driver.

Thebookswereherfriends · 15/03/2020 20:56

Where would the uk summon up people to police this? We barely see a community police officer in our rural area. Are they going to have the army manning every village to check no-one is out for a walk?

Troels · 15/03/2020 21:06

Sister lives in Spain. She's was at work today and again tomorrow, she has paperwork permission if she's stopped to go to work and back.
She said the Police are all over patroling. They had to send a lot of tourists back to their hotels off the beach today.
Her job is repatriating them all. She got 1000 out saturday and Sunday and will send 2000 tomorrow, then she said she's going home to watch box sets. Luckily she had bought cat food before the shutdown, no one wants to be stuck in a house with a hungry cat.

UnaCorda · 15/03/2020 21:06

I'm in Italy. Going for a solo jog is ok. They are discouraging random walks and bike rides but if you're walking a dog it's fine.

I suspect there might be quite a lot of surreptitious dog-borrowing if that's the case.

Ortega · 15/03/2020 21:12

We have a dog walker on standby if I have to self isolate.

Isolate means isolate.

I have been without my kids for a several weeks and have one week to go, because it means isolate.

However, if you cant find the money for a dog walker (ours is doing it cheap to helpnpeoplenusolating and recoup some losses due to cancellations), what do you do?

I have 2 working cockers. They would be a nightmare with mo walks for 2 weeks. Even the puppy.

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 21:16

My uncle lives in N. Italy. He's going to work every day, walking the dog and looking after his animals.

Do you think farmers in isolation will just let their animals die?

Tonyaster · 15/03/2020 21:17

I have no neighbours. I will walk my dogs everyday and ride my horse. I almost certainly won't see another living person all day. One of the benefits of living rurally.

selfisolate · 15/03/2020 21:18

so if u have a back garden, then thats fine? be nice to get outside even if its just within that.

RaeBeam · 15/03/2020 21:20

In Italy they're on lockdown and they're not allowed to leave the house unless they have a form to say they're going to buy food/go to the pharmacist and you can only go one person.

I have wondered similarly though as I live very rurally and would want to walk my dog if this happened... whose going to stop me walking in the countryside outside my house?

I just think it seems all a bit dramatic and not likely to happen here.
