Who is carrying on as normal/going out and about and sticking to plans?

There seems to be a real divide.
Among my friends, ,many are staying put, cancelling plans and hunkering down for the next week and waiting to see how the land lies.
The other half are still of the 'pfff it's going to blow over' camp and are merrily talking about their trip to thailand and making plans for summer bbqs.

It's really unnerving. I flip between being utterly terrified to that reading about Nadine Dorries who seems to be recovering well, and hoping it's not going to be as bad as I expect.

If anyone would like to see actual scenarios of contagion with different outcomes, I highly recommend this article: www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2020/world/corona-simulator/

I've looked at it throughout the day. President Obama just tweeted about it, so it's going to get a lot more play. Social isolation flattens the curve. It's the responsible thing to do.

Cam77 · 15/03/2020 20:08

Jesus the state of this thread. People still going to the gym ffs. You won’t be feeling so proud of this in a couple of months time.

@Donkeytail
I would say good bonkers.

@thenightsky
She sounds an absolute delight.

Nancydrawn · 15/03/2020 20:09

(The only thing the article really doesn't account for is, well, those who die--it assumes everyone recovers. Even so, the numbers are fascinating.)

Greenpop21 · 15/03/2020 20:11

Work in school so still going to watch tomorrow as are DC and DH can’t work from home.
Cancelled Easter break in Europe.
Won’t be going to bars and restaurants etc. but don’t do that often anyway.

JellyfishandShells · 15/03/2020 20:12

Normal routine in terms of going out and about but not making any forward travel plans or anything like theatre bookings.

Greenpop21 · 15/03/2020 20:12

Work not watch

Elderflower14 · 15/03/2020 20:16

I have a meeting on Wednesday with my sons social worker on the other side of the country... Have to go... Have to travel back through London.....!

thelikelylass · 15/03/2020 20:17

I am going to work, shopping, been to three events and two pubs this week. Dog walks too.It has been a nice week as no crowds. I've changed not one thing. Not even purchased extra food or loo roll. I refuse to discuss it in real life too as people are rabid about it.

Racheyg · 15/03/2020 20:20

I'm Carrying on as normal.
Gym, Travel to work on the tube, Work, Kids at school.

Dh work has time him to work fro home this week.

Have theatre tickets booked for 2 weeks so hoping all still going ahead.

Have Vegas booked for end of June, and family holiday to Tenerife in July. Really hoping we get a hold on this.

Jenala · 15/03/2020 20:20

@thelikelylass can I ask why? I'm really interested in the thought process behind this.

user1497207191 · 15/03/2020 20:22

Plus there is a huge difference between self isolating and being cautious. It's not all or nothing. Go to the shops. Walk your dog. Let your kids run around a field. Walk on the beach. Just don't go be part of a tv studio audience, go to shows, invite 6 friends for dinner, have parties etc. It's not hard to grasp.

Unfortunately, all the thick people don't grasp it and can't seem to understand the middle ground of anything - it's all or nothing to them - they just love the extremes.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/03/2020 20:22

Still going out, but thinking that I shouldn't really. I'm following government advice, but I think there's a good chance the advice is wrong and we should be on lockdown like other countries.
From tomorrow I will be working from home on the days when that is possible and not through choice.

pourmeanotherglass · 15/03/2020 20:23

Carrying on as normal for now, except that I decided not to meet up with my elderly parents this week. Im still going to work, but have set up access to work systems from my home computer in case this will be needed. Kids still going to school, and any clubs that haven't been cancelled. Went to church, but they had put some measures in place to reduce risk ( avoiding communion, refreshments, sharing the peace, etc).

SellFridges · 15/03/2020 20:24

Broadly as normal here, although we will follow whatever guidelines are brought in. We were out and about this weekend and pleased to see the various independent cafes and restaurants we visited were busy. We went to the theatre last night and I didn’t spot any empty seats (it was a show that would mainly appeal to the younger demographic though). Lots of vigorous hand washing was visible whenever I used a loo.

Kids have been to parties (because they’ll be seeing the same kids at school tomorrow) but we have cancelled DS’s which was due in a couple of weeks. I expect rules to be stricter by then.

We won’t be popping to see my 95 year old Grandmother any time soon but we did see PIL after checking they were happy with that.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 15/03/2020 20:25

Only 1 diagnosed case in our county still. I am aware that will mean there are more that have been undiagnosed yet, but it is in indications that we should be able to still go out to the shops/work etc with some precautions and remain relatively safe from infection.

SellFridges · 15/03/2020 20:25

Oh, but both DH and I will be working from home for at least the next month as per our workplaces guidelines.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 15/03/2020 20:28

I would imagine @Jenala because not all of us come into close contact (within a metre for 15 minutes) with people who are at serious risk and we are at low risk of the more unpleasant side effects ourselves. I would assume people at greater risk won't be going to the pub, theatre, gym or tube.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/03/2020 20:28

"Go to the shops. Walk your dog. Let your kids run around a field. Walk on the beach. Just don't go be part of a tv studio audience, go to shows, invite 6 friends for dinner, have parties etc. It's not hard to grasp."

Why is inviting 6 people to your home more risky than going to the shops. I've been at the shops this weekend and conscious that I'm touching things that have potentially been touched by HUNDREDS of people. I try to open doors with my sleeve, not always possible, when I take something to the till, the assistant touches it again before I have to touch again to put in my bag, etc. etc.
I don't see how 6 people can be worse than this.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/03/2020 20:30

Jenala - I went to the gym on Thursday. I know it's risky, but I'm also suffering from anxiety from the whole thing and therefore need to exercise. I'm not self-isolating until I have to because of mental health issues. I think the risk of depression from self-isolation is as big as the risk of CV complications for me.
Really, I think we should be in lockdown, but until we are, I will still be going out.

BeardyButton · 15/03/2020 20:30

If the experts are right. The epidemiologists, for example. Then threads like this are not going to age well. The UK seems to have learned nothing from the successes and failures of other coubtries. Keeping the economy going... Yes. Lets see how that works out. I give it three wks before uk has turned into italy.

I thought I was happy to have left after brexit. But Jesus!!!! Am i happy not to be in England now.

Gwenhwyfar · 15/03/2020 20:31

I think you're probably right Beardy, but am still not ready to imprison myself in my tiny flat.

HarrySnotter · 15/03/2020 20:33

She doesn't have a computer so wouldn't be able to order online shopping and we can't always get to her. I've told her to take her trolley and go round to Lidl when it opens at 8 and there are no crowds.

Can't you order it for her and have it delivered to her house? @MinesaPinot. That would definitely be better for her than to be going out shopping.

Kahlua4me · 15/03/2020 20:34

We have stopped nearly everything as it seems the socially responsible thing to do.
Dc are still going to school but no other activities.
Dh and I run our own business so keeping going. We are working at home but lads who work for us are still going out and will do so for as long as possible. However I am monitoring where they go and doing all I can to ensure their safety. They have been given extra PPE.

My anxiety meantime is through the roof, both for our health and our livelihood.....

JinglingHellsBells · 15/03/2020 20:34

I am avoiding social gatherings and not going to crowded places as far as DH who may fall into the higher risk group and a parent in their 90s who could need support so I want to avoid the risk as far as possible for myself and not to infect them.

If I was young and didn't have responsibilities I might act differently

Kahlua4me · 15/03/2020 20:36

Gwenhwyfar I have found that walking in the fresh air, even in the rain, has really helped my anxiety.
