Who is carrying on as normal/going out and about and sticking to plans?

DennisReynoldsDuster · 15/03/2020 18:08

There seems to be a real divide.
Among my friends, ,many are staying put, cancelling plans and hunkering down for the next week and waiting to see how the land lies.
The other half are still of the 'pfff it's going to blow over' camp and are merrily talking about their trip to thailand and making plans for summer bbqs.

It's really unnerving. I flip between being utterly terrified to that reading about Nadine Dorries who seems to be recovering well, and hoping it's not going to be as bad as I expect.

Carrying on as normal while popping into every shop I pass to try to buy toilet Rolland other rare essentials.
My sons university has closed for the rest of the academic year (London) so he is working from home.

Carrying on as normal and taking more care, where we can

UntamedWisteria · 16/03/2020 20:18

You lot "carrying on as normal" even after today's new government advice?

flyingspaghettimonster · 16/03/2020 20:23

Selfish twats. They are the ones still going about as normal.

Tiggy321 · 16/03/2020 20:27

I am a teacher and luckily can continue to work online with students (6/7 year olds) so still getting paid. I don’t how people who work in bars and restaurants etc are coping- it must be horrendous. But no one has been given a choice here- it is illegal now for bars to open. It’s a scary time for everyone.

Palavah · 16/03/2020 20:30

it's not illegal - Johnson was asked explicitly if he would impose those measures and he wheedled out of it.

This means bars, restaurants, theatres can't claim on insurance because they haven't been told to close, they will just have no customers. And because the govenrment hasn't told them to close they can try to get away with not offering any support.

nellodee · 16/03/2020 20:31

Deaths per country
Italy
21/2/20 1
25/2/20 10
4/3/20 107
12/3/20 1016

The longest period it took to x10 was 8 days

UK
5/3/20 1
12/3/20 10

It does not take a genius to do this...

19/3/20 100
26/3/20 1000
2/4/20 10,000

We have just over 4,000 critical care beds.
The 10,000 that could be dead by Easter will be infected NOW, because you incubate for about a week, take 2 weeks to get really sick and another week to actually die.

9/4/20 100,000 people dead.

That's 90,000 more than the week before. These people might not yet be infected.

Please, please, please. Protect your loved ones. If you are thinking about, "Should I...." then take the option that keeps people out of harms way. If you think "Well what about the poor nurses, they can't stay at home?" well no, they can't. But you can make it so they don't have to watch hundreds of thousands of people die. That's one of the best things you can do for them right now. "What about the delivery men?" Well, you can make it so that if and when they need a bed, you're not in it.

If you can, at all, over the next week and beyond:
Stay. At. Home.

PanicAndRun · 16/03/2020 20:35

You lot "carrying on as normal" even after today's new government advice?

Well schools are still open so DD is going in and so am I. So that's normal. I have mandatory training this week so I have to go to that too. The Government seems reluctant to actually shut/do anything and relying on people to sort themselves out and deal with any fallout themselves.

We also need to go shopping, despite always ordering online because all the slots are full until April.

PanicAndRun · 16/03/2020 20:39

And because the govenrment hasn't told them to close they can try to get away with not offering any support.

Exactly. They managed to avoid any financial responsibility or loss so far and get people arguing between themselves for being "selfish" and "irresponsible ".

Hope common sense kindness and humour prevail !

This article shows the importance of social distancing using simulations.

Rachel709 · 16/03/2020 20:47

Selfish people unless you are going to work.

EthelMayFergus · 16/03/2020 20:53

Palavah Tiggy might not be in the UK.

glennamy · 16/03/2020 20:53

Just older people need to start taking care... Esp. those with underlying illnesses!

AdoreTheBeach · 16/03/2020 20:57

I am - go an extent. I go to the gym but new procedures there are we clean equipment before and after use, each person, every time.

I’m washing my hands even more than before. I use a glove to open doors (glove a look so strops me from touching my face).

DH office is closed for two weeks so schedule is out of kilter.

AllMouthandTrousers · 16/03/2020 20:59

Carrying on as normal here!

Zampa · 16/03/2020 21:00

What a difference 24 hours makes!

Yesterday, I would have said normal (in fact, I did, on page 2). Now, DH and I are both working from home, DD1s SEN school closes tomorrow and I've cancelled by gym classes to the end of the month.

I've not given up my no booze for Lent rule yet, but I'm close!

sixeightfour · 16/03/2020 21:00

My daughters childminder is now in self isolation for 14 days. I can no longer work. I'm devastated

Beesisabuzzin · 16/03/2020 21:04

So much stupid. After watching today's news conference why the fuck are you carrying on as normal? Is what's happening in Italy and Spain just passing you by or are you so dumb you think that's not going to happen here?

AllMouthandTrousers · 16/03/2020 21:11

Because the economy tanking will really fucking hurt a lot of ppl for a long time. No point surviving the virus to a wasteland of starvation.

HarrietThePi · 16/03/2020 21:14

Carrying on as normal but my normal is pretty much the school run, work, supermarket. Would usually take dd out to places on the weekend, I will stop doing that for now. I can't work from home because I work in retail, though when/if the schools close I will have to stop working.

Not sure what there is to be done differently unless someone in our household starts to show symptoms in which case it will be self isolation time. I have been washing my hands more than usual and using hand sanitizer at work. That's the main change. And I've started to have panic attacks, I'm very stressed at the idea of going into lockdown. I hate the thought of not being a free person. I am not selfish, I will follow the rules, but the thought of not being allowed to leave the house as I please, does really scare me.

teenagetantrums · 16/03/2020 21:14

I'm carrying on as normal. I don't really go out in big groups. I work in care so have to work. My DP has to go to work in a supermarket . No small kids so everything as normal for me until one off us gets any symptoms. Mind you I'm pretty convinced we had it in January.

nellodee · 16/03/2020 21:14

Wasteland of starvation? I thought it was my job to be the scaremonger.

daisychain01 · 16/03/2020 21:19

@midwestspring what amazing simulations!

Ladyglitterfairydust · 16/03/2020 21:22

Dh and I both work in schools and have dc that attend school and nursery. I don’t much see the point in locking myself away. I’ll get it from school if I’m going to get it. I totally understand more vulnerable groups being very very careful though.
