Did anyone else get this? You will have seen that, due to the ongoing uncertainty around the full impact of Coronavirus, supermarkets have been much busier than usual and customers are choosing to stock up. I wanted to personally reassure you that we have more food and other essential items coming to us from manufacturers and into our warehouses and distribution centres. If we all shop just for the food that we and our families need, there will be enough for everyone. I also wanted to let you know that at Sainsbury's, we are working really hard to ensure this remains the case. Over the past two weeks we have:

Ordered more stock of essential items from our suppliers

Put more capacity into our warehouses and

Set limits on a small number of items, including some cleaning products, soap and pain relief. This is a precautionary measure - if everyone shops normally, there will be enough for everyone.
There are gaps on shelves because of increased demand, but we have new stock arriving regularly and we're doing our best to keep shelves stocked. Our store colleagues are working tirelessly and doing the best job they can.
Which brings me onto a request. Please think before you buy and only buy what you and your family need. If we all do this then we can make sure we have enough for everyone. And please help elderly and vulnerable friends, family and neighbours with their shopping if you can.
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and to thank our colleagues who are all working incredibly hard to ensure we can continue to serve our customers well.
Best wishes

Mike

Interestingly, I ended up just taking a trip out (hadn’t planned too but realised time of the month was shortly due!) Same supermarket that was out of everything yesterday still had no toilet roll or anti bak wipes HOWEVER had loads of pasta, paracetamol, eggs......wondering if they held it round the back and put more out midday....

Lordfrontpaw · 15/03/2020 14:19

And some shops are doing card only - not sure of its because they don’t want to handle money.

hopeishere · 15/03/2020 14:20

There's no Sainsbury's delivery slots available here I am until April!! Totally booked up. Madness.

buttermilkwaffles · 15/03/2020 14:30

I got that email, a similar one from Boots and week before last got several from airlines saying how thoroughly they clean their aircraft overnight. Have also had quite a few from other companies in the past few days.

Lordfrontpaw · 15/03/2020 14:38

I’ve had a few like this from stores.

Re: handgel

I'm usually of the same mind but my son is at secondary school and avoids going to the toilet all day because of the antisocial behaviour that goes on in there. They closed all bar one lot of toilets at one point in order to manage it. So he could do with some in lieu of soap and water but you just can't get it unless you want to pay £10 for 60ml on amazon or ebay anyway. Selfish fuckers.”

Sounds me as though the Selfishness has been ongoing for some time - what kind of a society are we living in where kids can’t wash their hands due to anti-social behaviour? So much for the polite reputation of the Brits.

AlunWynsKnee · 15/03/2020 15:00

No Sainsbury's delivery slots here until April either. Very annoying. We have a delivery pass and will be in the isolating group. I wonder if they'll have to prioritise but don't know how.

hopeishere · 15/03/2020 16:38

I'm wondering if they're going to release them in batches or something.

Lordfrontpaw · 15/03/2020 17:09

I know I shouldn’t laugh - but I just saw a headline about a shortage of sex dolls in the UK and US because the factories manufacturing them in China are closed.

OneFootintheRave · 15/03/2020 17:30

@EmpressMcSchnozzle That's fascinating. I'm off to look at WWII rations now. No wonder no obesity then!

ivykaty44 · 15/03/2020 18:12

The red light district in Amsterdam is suffering due to the virus

Just seen an advert for andrex loo roll.....

Nekoness · 15/03/2020 19:53

Pet food is still available online from zooplus, with delays to shipping. They’re use to bulk orders (I always order for at least a month in one order) so you might have a better chance. Coming from Germany. Closed borders only apply to individual tourism, not commercial trade.

Crunchymum · 15/03/2020 19:58

I didn't get it?

It's my supermarket of choice (weekly online delivery plus go into store 3/4 times per week)

And it's not made a jot of difference as the place was like a bomb had gone off today and they have zero online slots available for next 3 weeks.

Asking the stupid to be socially conscious is pointless Shock

SeaEagleFeather · 15/03/2020 20:59

We need ration books. It's a war like situation and people need to be forced into think more about others more than they're used to

get .... a ... grip ....dear god, what the hell are you on about? is this truly the worst you've ever experienced, that you think this hyped-up-flu is like wartime?

Sounds me as though the Selfishness has been ongoing for some time - what kind of a society are we living in where kids can’t wash their hands due to anti-social behaviour?

sadly, this I agree with :(

KatherineJaneway · 16/03/2020 06:33

I've had lots of emails from restaurants outlining what steps they are taking.

fascinated · 16/03/2020 20:18

IT IS LIKE WARTIME! Wake up!!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 16/03/2020 20:34

Grab a few packs of vac packed gnocchi ... boil in hot water for 2 mins and perfect with pasta sauce, amazing instead of pasta in a "bake" type dish with a shit tonne of cheese. Or toss in a little oil, oven bake and they are little teeny roasties.

Keep for a few weeks and about 60p a pack in Aldi or Lidl.

SeaEagleFeather · 17/03/2020 07:34

Hysteria really, really won't help.

Lordfrontpaw · 17/03/2020 07:52

Not so much hysteria but there is one decent supermarket close to us. They have no paper goods, no cleaning items, eggs, potatoes, onions, lettuce, milk, just a few meat, no chicken... huge empty aisles. It’s really frustrating!

Nekoness · 17/03/2020 08:33

“you think this hyped-up-flu is like wartime”

Hysteria is pretending hundreds of millions of people on literal lockdown around the world due to a worldwide pandemic isn’t real and insisting it’s just hyped up flu

SeaEagleFeather · 17/03/2020 10:56

It's the hysteria leading to panic buying. Crazy :/

Corvid has to be handled carefully but it seems to me that the biggest thing we need right now (other than people keeping their feet on the ground!) is more testing kits, to see who has had it in the general population and who hasn't. Im sure they are making tests as fast as humanly possible, but a small proportion of those should be put aside for generalized widespread testing.

If a whole load of people have already had it, and it seems likely since people are infected who're at some remove from known cases, then in fact all the social measures could be de-escalated to some degree. If not, the measures stay as they are.

Again, old people, younger people and children die of the flu ... which is not to say don't take it seriously, but the hysteria is counterproductive

SeaEagleFeather · 17/03/2020 11:20

Hysteria is pretending hundreds of millions of people on literal lockdown around the world due to a worldwide pandemic isn’t real and insisting it’s just hyped up flu

I'm not the one jumping up and down here.

Nekoness · 17/03/2020 11:41

“I'm not the one jumping up and down here.”

You’re downright spreading bullshit with your lies and shouting down others.

People need to self isolate for a forthright and there’s no online deliveries in most places. They’re not “hoarding” or “panic buying” or “being-selfish”. They’re buying so they can go into lockdown for 2-4 weeks and help stop the spread of this virus by self isolating.

Meanwhile, the little keyboard warrior you are, you’re still spouting shite about it being a flu. Keep up. Nobody believes your crap.

SeaEagleFeather · 17/03/2020 11:55

As long as it makes you feel better, dear.

Nekoness · 17/03/2020 17:00

No, people like you put the fear of God in me. Because everyone needs to self isolate to contain a pandemic. Even one person who still thinks like you is one person too many.
