Did anyone else get this? You will have seen that, due to the ongoing uncertainty around the full impact of Coronavirus, supermarkets have been much busier than usual and customers are choosing to stock up. I wanted to personally reassure you that we have more food and other essential items coming to us from manufacturers and into our warehouses and distribution centres. If we all shop just for the food that we and our families need, there will be enough for everyone. I also wanted to let you know that at Sainsbury's, we are working really hard to ensure this remains the case. Over the past two weeks we have:

Ordered more stock of essential items from our suppliers

Put more capacity into our warehouses and

Set limits on a small number of items, including some cleaning products, soap and pain relief. This is a precautionary measure - if everyone shops normally, there will be enough for everyone.
There are gaps on shelves because of increased demand, but we have new stock arriving regularly and we're doing our best to keep shelves stocked. Our store colleagues are working tirelessly and doing the best job they can.
Which brings me onto a request. Please think before you buy and only buy what you and your family need. If we all do this then we can make sure we have enough for everyone. And please help elderly and vulnerable friends, family and neighbours with their shopping if you can.
I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support and to thank our colleagues who are all working incredibly hard to ensure we can continue to serve our customers well.
Best wishes

Mike

I got it but there’s still no delivery slots for 3 weeks so not a lot I do with that info. I do appreciate businesses reaching out to customers with clear information though.

wonkytonkwoman · 15/03/2020 08:18

I think that unlike what was called the 'blitz spirit' in which people united in support of fighting a tangible enemy, fighting a virus changes the meaning of 'fight'for some people

tinybluerose · 15/03/2020 08:19

Who stockpiles condensed milk ?!?!??

Mixed with water it makes milk- no long life milk in stock.

BennyVegas · 15/03/2020 08:19

Are there really that many people who don't have access to soap and water?

Yes, I understand there are people who have to go out and about in the community who may not have access to soap and water but these aren't the only people buying the stuff.

I've heard people talk abut buying it so they're ready to self isolate. If you're self isolating in your own home, there's surely no need for hand gel at all. Washing with soap and water is better protection and better for your skin.

dottiedodah · 15/03/2020 08:20

Our local Tesco was stripped bare of loo rolls ,however no problem with fresh food at all .Some eggs as well .I too think they should put a limit on certain items .Chap in front of me appeared to have bought a chunk of the whole shop, for a bill of nearly £400 !

bellinisurge · 15/03/2020 08:20

Comically @rogdmum , dh was looking for condensed milk for a key lime pie recipe. It was the missing piece of the puzzle. Luckily, about 6 months ago when I was slowly adding to our pantry a couple of tins at a time, I bought a tin.
Using my normal "one out one in" strategy, I added a tin to my delivery order for next week.

AnguaResurgam · 15/03/2020 08:20

"Are there really that many people who don't have access to soap and water?"

Lots of people do not have access throughout the day, if they are out in public, using public transport, touching surfaces tougpched by many. There isn't always a sink in proximity.

And even though we're not meant to touch our faces, a lot of people are realising it's a very hard habit to break. So if you know your hands still stray despite your resolve, keeping them as clean as you can is the next line of defence, and that can't only be done when you can access a sinl

BennyVegas · 15/03/2020 08:21

One over the lack of toilet paper and one of the limit of two packs of paracetamol.

The two packs of paracetamol limit is standard isn't it, nothing to do with corona?

IdentifyasTired · 15/03/2020 08:21

I just placed an order this morning and received this.

Very sensible of Sainsbury's.

Concern is natural and appropriate. Panic is unnecessary and unhelpful.

okiedokieme · 15/03/2020 08:21

That's a really good message, good pr from them. It is varying around the country, plenty in some branches, ransacked in others

IdentifyasTired · 15/03/2020 08:22

However I couldn't get a slot until the end of next week. So demand still very high.

Wehttam · 15/03/2020 08:22

That’s fantastic but two things;

People will ignore the message, they should restrict massive bulk buys and remove those who are loading up their cars then going back in for more.

What are those with elderly relatives or the elderly in general supposed to do now they face a possible 4 month isolation? To some extent people do need more on hand as nipping to the supermarkets every day will be a thing of the past once lockdown kicks in.

LightAsTheBreeze · 15/03/2020 08:24

Remember if you are doing your online shop don’t leave it until the very last minute to fine tune it, the website may be down, I speak as someone who usually leaves it to 10 pm the night before to check it’s got everything I need. This could be tempting to to if you booked your slot ages ago as I have

lljkk · 15/03/2020 08:24

I didn't even know I was on a Sainsbo email list!

jrb123 · 15/03/2020 08:28

Well, with the lockdowns in Italy and Spain and the threat of all over 70s having to self-isolate for weeks and possibly months you can hardly blame people for desperately trying to make sure they have enough food in for themselves and their families in case they can't get out to shop again. We are retired and live in a remote rural area where there are lots of retirees and I shudder to think what will happen. Most of us have heavily stocked store cupboards anyway, but I will be getting more supplies in as soon as I can (not hand gel, as we won't be seeing anyone anymore).

WaterIsWide · 15/03/2020 08:28

I AM shopping normally. I resent being patronised like this. It makes me cross that people are having to be told not to stockpile and panic buy.

rogdmum · 15/03/2020 08:28

Mixed with water it makes milk- no long life milk in stock.

tinybluerose I now think I ought to be quite embarrassed that I didn’t know that!

RippleEffects · 15/03/2020 08:30

I think it is a calm and reassuring message.

As someone looking out for and shopping for a very vulnerable and cancer suffering, heart attack recovering disabled neighbour and healthy but late 70's parents, the limits are a PITA and make it hard to do so.

I have a family of five plus two other households to pick up for. 4 toilet rolls per shop means I can't do a big shop, I have to go out multiple times or to multiple shops.

Cameron2012 · 15/03/2020 08:32

Bennyvegus,
Yes you are right but apparently this chap was the one exception out of the entire population in the Uk 😀

Springishere2020 · 15/03/2020 08:32

I've been buying less recently as opposed to more.
Last month I did a big shop for the local food bank and I'm so glad I did now.
I'm past caring about the CV. I'm more worried about my migraines at the moment as my vision went for 3 hours yesterday. I had a small window where I could see but the rest was a huge blind patch with a shimmering border.

bemoreeverything · 15/03/2020 08:37

Are there really that many people who don't have access to soap and water?

Yes. Yes there are. DD worked an 8 hour shift yesterday, front line retail, with only 2 breaks. She has always used hand sanitiser during her shift, because money is one of the dirtiest things you come across on a daily basis.

NotTerfNorCis · 15/03/2020 08:37

Got a similar one from Tesco.

Straycatstrut · 15/03/2020 08:40

Some people who have HUGE trollys full may look greedy and like they're stock piling, but they're actually buying for others. A few people in our village are buying huge amounts but delivering it to vulnerable and elderly who can't get out. Or people self-isolating. So it's not fair to judge straight away.

My parents (big car) buy for themselves and my Grandma and sometimes me and my two boys as I don't drive and can't carry it all. I bet they get dirty looks, but it's all shared out.

LynetteScavo · 15/03/2020 08:40

I've noticed my local Sainsbury's superstore has extra staff loading the shelves like they do I the run up to Christmas. At some point surely people will feel they have sufficiently stocked up and this will calm down.

BeijingBikini · 15/03/2020 08:42

Gosh, I feel lucky that over the past few years I've been taking the mini soap bars from every hotel I've been to! I have quite a good stockpile so no need to buy any.
