to ask if your kids are going to school on Monday?

I’ve been quite happy to follow government recommendations so far, but today my DD couldn’t go swimming with her mates as their parents are keeping them home. I made a comment that they’ll be surrounded by kids at school on Monday anyway and she said that their parents will be keeping them off now as they disagree that schools should be open. I was going to keep sending mine as long as they’re open, I’ve got three healthy teen kids but also a preschool child with asthma who ends up in hospital fairly regularly just from basic colds and am second guessing myself now?

We took DS who's 2 out nursery Thursday he has chronic lung disease.

Both my DD's are in good health at parents evening the teacher was completely fine about DD2 working from home if needs be given her brothers condition.

squeekums · 15/03/2020 02:02

school as normal on monday unless the gov closes them

MoonBlood · 15/03/2020 09:34

I think I’m going to err on the side of caution. My youngest was only in hospital 2 weeks ago with severe respiratory problems after getting a minor cold at nursery. It was the worst I’ve seen her suffer and we were pretty scared tbh. I don’t know what could happen if she caught this and I don’t think it’s worth the risk. Thanks everyone x

The important thing is to keep young people away from old people. One way of doing this is having kids at school or at home. If we shut schools there is a risk that NHS workers will not be ablento work, and grandparents will see more if their grandchildren. There is very very little risk to young people if they catch the virus.

hammeringinmyhead · 15/03/2020 09:47

My DS is 16 months and will be going to nursery but he only does Mondays and Tuesdays. I fully expect it to be the last week I can send him. No idea what I will do about work after that.

Oblomov20 · 15/03/2020 09:56

Yes. Ds1 has GCSE's. Ds2 SAT's. They'll be going in until I'm told not to.

I'm going to work tomorrow.

Oblomov20 · 15/03/2020 09:58

Clubs this weekend have been cancelled : football and boxing.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 15/03/2020 10:00

DS isn't going to school tomorrow. The fact that it's closed due to an INSET day may have something to do with that fact though...

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 15/03/2020 10:01

I'm following the government advice. Dc4 has a fever so will be at home tomorrow but go back on thursday (he's been off since last thursday). All other dc will all attend school tomorrow as it is only the person with the symptoms that needs to isolate, not the whole household.

Aragog · 15/03/2020 10:08

My husband's a teacher and he's been told that closure is highly unlikely

Who by?

I teach - in England state school. We've not been told anything officially but earlier last week the LEA lead I spoke with was feeling it would be inevitable at some point. That hadn't changed by Friday. We didn't think it would be this week but maybe linked to the Easter break. For us that is in a fortnight.

We have been working on plans for if we close much of last week and it continues this week. Almost all teachers have had extra IT training with regards using a learning platform and doing screen capture with voice recordings, and video lessons amongst other bits. Remainder will have it tomorrow. Various other things are going on in the background too though we haven't yet briefed parents on it all.

Aragog · 15/03/2020 10:14

It for now I'll still be going to school for work. I have an auto immune condition and take immun-suppressing medication so I'm doing what I can whilst still working with lots of young children who aren't the greatest with hygiene despite the extra hand washing! I'm even cleaning my own classroom a couple of times a day where I can.

Dd does her A levels this year. She's had her final university interview cancelled and it will now be a telephone interview. She's woken this morning with a sore throat. Although she's coughed a bit with it it isn't a dry cough and it's not continuous. She has no temperature. Only reason I'm unsure of her going in tomorrow is that one of her friends messaged them yesterday to say he may be self isolating as he's been in contact with someone else who now has all the symptoms. So we will monitor today and overnight and make a decision tomorrow morning. She's supposed to have a drinking test next week too so hopefully it stays as just a sore throat.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 15/03/2020 10:15

Yes because I have to work if I can get it as well. I need as much as possible because I only get paid for the days that I do and we can't afford for me to take the time off willy nilly.

hels71 · 15/03/2020 10:17

DD will be going to school as normal until schools close or symptoms show.

MasterMargarita · 15/03/2020 10:17

I have presented with all the symptoms last week so we have to self isolate. Kids won't be going.

I don't understand why people are going by Boris says. Why would you pay any attention to him when the rest of the world are doing something altogether different?

Aragog · 15/03/2020 10:18

There is very very little risk to young people if they catch the virus.

No, but there is evidence or suggestion that they do carry it and spread it.
The people teaching them and working in the school aren't young children. Many are older, many have underlying medical conditions which puts them at risk.
The families the other children go home to aren't young children either.

lljkk · 15/03/2020 10:21

DC have GCSEs & A-levels to prepare for (could I stop the 18yo from going in, anyway?).

I'm confused by the "a little herd immunity would be a good thing" and the rabid "You Must Wash Your Hands frequently to Avoid getting & Spreading it!" messages.

Makes me want to ignore both.

Redyoyo · 15/03/2020 10:22

My dd has a cough but it has been ongoing since the end of Jan, a course of steriods and antibiotics hasn't really helped, she's been at school though. I don't know what to do tbh i was going to send them as its not a new cough.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 15/03/2020 10:27

Yes ..my daughter is going as usual. Schools in our area are well into closing planning in case they need to but until Boris says stay home off to school we will go! My daughter attends one and I work in the other!

themarkofthemaker · 15/03/2020 10:33

teachers must be furious today as they might not be getting the extra holidays they crave

millymaud · 15/03/2020 10:35

The issue I have is that schools aren’t being remotely sensible.

No soap. No paper towels. Visits to high risk places. Parents evenings - three to four hours of people crammed into a small space.

We don’t know what the long term impacts of coronavirus might be.

I’m unhappy.

YgritteSnow · 15/03/2020 10:36

teachers must be furious today as they might not be getting the extra holidays they crave

There's always one isn't there? 🙄

Doyoumind · 15/03/2020 10:37

My DC's school is being sensible. Extra soap and handwashing and cancelling events that will bring parents and others into the school.

HavenDilemma · 15/03/2020 10:38

Just to maybe reassure those worrying about fines/attendance...

I kept DD (5) off thurs & fri due to my low immunity, even though her attendance is down to 92.27% (health issues).
I've just now looked on the school app and it is still at 92.27%... I realise this is just her school, but I'm wondering if schools have decided not to note any absences due to isolation. Interesting.......

tootiredtoconga · 15/03/2020 10:39

We've been told in no uncertain terms that if we close we'll be expected to work from home. Other schools locally have told staff that they'd still be expected in school, it would just be closed to students. So it wouldn't be an "extra holiday", far from it since I'd be trying to somehow combine WFH with looking after my own DC. Don't let that get in the way of your teacher- bashing though Hmm

Tibblestoe · 15/03/2020 10:39

No they're not going to school on Monday. I am a SAHM so I have the luxury of pulling them out and I will not be taking that luxury for granted.

I don't understand why anyone would keep their child in if they have the option to keep them at home.
