to ask if your kids are going to school on Monday?

I’ve been quite happy to follow government recommendations so far, but today my DD couldn’t go swimming with her mates as their parents are keeping them home. I made a comment that they’ll be surrounded by kids at school on Monday anyway and she said that their parents will be keeping them off now as they disagree that schools should be open. I was going to keep sending mine as long as they’re open, I’ve got three healthy teen kids but also a preschool child with asthma who ends up in hospital fairly regularly just from basic colds and am second guessing myself now?

Dds are at independent school and have a month off starting Friday. I was moaning about how long it was a couple of weeks ago. Now I'm relieved. School has sent info out two or three times a week. I think they are planning to put the whole school online next term and all lessons will be given at normal time and students log in when they are due that lesson.

youvegottobekidding · 14/03/2020 23:04

Yes mine will be going Monday. The schools will be closing, in 2 wks, for 2 wks, for the Easter break though. I work in a school & think it’s best the schools aren’t closed early as the children are contained there. If the schools are to be closed early, there’s going to be a lot of kids out & about.

Zombiemum1946 · 14/03/2020 23:07

@cardibach We're in Scotland, it was communication from the council my husband works for. There has only just been a confirmed case in our area. There had been some excited chatter about schools shutting for 2 months from the Easter hols onwards. The rumours were hurriedly quashed. It may of course change, but that was the situation last Thursday.

Finallyatooth · 14/03/2020 23:07

Yes but I wish I didn't have to send him.

I think the Government ought to shut down the schools now. I have just signed the petition asking for this.

Treaclepie19 · 14/03/2020 23:09

Mine will be but I also wish he didn't have to.
I'm pregnant and really worried about getting ill and missing my dating scan (previous TFMR and the NT is important).
I'm trying to take it day by day.
In your situation I can totally understand it. Anyone with vulnerable children I wouldn't think twice about them staying home.

AngryPrincess · 14/03/2020 23:09

I think, if you can, you should keep them off. I everyone who can, keeps their kids off, that will slow the spread. But not everyone can.

LimitIsUp · 14/03/2020 23:10

I don't know. I'm undecided. News from Italy is that younger patients than previously are being admitted.

Ds is in GCSE year and dd in A level year

There is an online petition calling for school closures - it's already at over 500,000 signatures

Treaclepie19 · 14/03/2020 23:12

Which one is that @LimitIsUp? I've signed one but its only on 100,000.

Jespers · 14/03/2020 23:13

No-one bothered about how out of step UK are with other counties in this?? I am.

In Ireland so schools all closed last thursday till 29th and then another review. Most of us believe it will be a minimum of 5 weeks but just taking things a day at a time really.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 14/03/2020 23:19

In the USA and our schools are closed for two weeks starting on Monday. Ironically, DS (11) has picked up a slight cold (definitely not coronavirus, it's really minor) so he'd probably have to stay at home anyway.

They've arranged online classes and work will be posted online as well. They had to bring all their textbooks home on Friday.

DH has been told to work from home and my office is tiny so we're allowed to go in as we can keep away from each other.

DontBe · 14/03/2020 23:31

Yes. I’m a nurse, I have to go to work.

To be honest it’s the school closures that concern me as to what I’m supposed to do with my children.

feelinguseless101 · 14/03/2020 23:40

My 2 are. I'm front line NHS and have no choice but to go in. DH is more flexible in his job but we're keeping the good will of managers for when the schools/ nurseries are forced to close.

HomeEdRocks18 · 14/03/2020 23:42

No, as all three of my kids have developed a cough and are hot. Keeping them inside for the recommended week

flumposie · 14/03/2020 23:50

Yep. If I have to go (teacher) then so does she [sGrin

TwinkleLightsRubberDucks · 14/03/2020 23:52

Nope, both of my DC have congenital heart disease, DC2 has other underlying health issues, I myself have congenital heart disease and other underlying health issues.
Both DC are not going back to school for the foreseeable, both of them will be off with a cough. Easter holidays start in 3 weeks here so DH and I will be reassessing during/after Easter holidays.

Kimmiekk · 14/03/2020 23:54

Same! On maternity & DS is in nursery. Paid up till end of this month. 4 cases in my area now. Should I still take him to nursery next week ?

TheNoodlesIncident · 14/03/2020 23:55

Yes, school has confirmed they are open so dc will be going, they are doing mock exams next week. We don't have any health issues and are not planning on seeing any of our vulnerable elderly relatives (they ALL have health problems), so there's no reason to keep him off. I can understand why a parent whose child has health problems, or if the parent has pre-existing conditions, would keep them home.

I'm fortunate that I'm not going out to work, I can't imagine how parents who HAVE to go to work are going to manage if the schools close. It's not to say that school is merely childcare, but if they're closed then childcare is clearly needed in the interim. How the hell are people going to manage?!

Qwerty543 · 15/03/2020 00:12

My work is putting plans in place for is schools close. I'm the only one with school age children so think I'm getting priority over being able to work from home. Fortunately I think they will let me do that rather than me just going off (unpaid). There will be a lot I can still do from home.

I'm sending mine until the schools actually close. I'm not worried about it at all. Only for my elderly relatives who are most at risk.

Enko · 15/03/2020 00:40

ds and dd3 are going they are in A level and GCSE years.

I am actually more concerned about dd2 who is returning to a uni in London with several self-isolating.

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 00:50

No, from Monday

Willyoujustbequiet · 15/03/2020 01:02

No chance. One with asthma and I've lost immediate family at a young age to a sudden infection and that was following medical advice.

For what its worth I think the UK will be proven woefully inadequate in its response very shortly. I was at hospital 2 days ago and the place was overrun with suspected cases.

alloutoffucks · 15/03/2020 01:19

If you are able to keep them off i.e. can look after them, I dont know why you wouldn't. There is so much unknown about this virus. So there are suggestions coming out that it could affect male infertility. If this is true, why would I want to risk my sons future ability to have kids by keeping him in school and letting him get the virus?
I am telling the Head they both have a temperature so need to self isolate for 7 days. And a lot can change politically in 7 days. In another week I think there will be no issue with keeping kids off.

MummytoCSJH · 15/03/2020 01:29

I've honestly not decided yet. I almost lost my son at 4 months because the doctors advised me 6 (yes 6! 6 different appointments with 5 different doctors!) times that he 'probably' just had a viral infection when in fact it was bacterial meningitis. If I hadn't taken him to the hospital when I did, because I felt fobbed off and knew something wasn't right, he wouldn't be here. I'm scared. He has a crappy immune system and anything going around he catches, and he gets the worst of it. He has been hospitalised for ear infections before. He's with his dad right now as it's his weekend I'm just not sure what to do. I was in team over-reaction until a few days ago, not sure what's changed my tune!
