Over 70s are going to be told to self isolate even if they don’t have the virus and this will be coming in 5-20 days and last 4 months

It makes sense to protect the most vulnerable and suggest they stay at home where at all possible. Our village has already started a neighbourhood help/ assistance scheme for the more vulnerable villagers.

As much as I dislike Boris, I think it is a good plan. We’re all going To be in lockdown anyway soon. You tell the elderly first so that when they shut schools, all the kids aren’t sent to the grandparents.

It’s all about nudges. To get people to realise what’s going on. Because at the moment no one will listen as shown by the response to @wheresmymojo

Having vulnerable older people alone, frightened and distressed for months is going to create a whole new raft of problems

This. There are potential solutions to this - such as commandeering hotels maybe, creating centres for older people who want to go there - but the idea of little social contact, such as going to the shops, a cafe, a day club for 4 months is one hell of an ask.

My Mums partner has had no such text and he is 71 hmm Confused

Goodness Dinosaur, I’m all for self-determination, but would your mum let you have a clear out of that med stash a bit? Take them to a pharmacy for disposal?

Peston was remarkably right about the government's stance on the coronavirus so far.

Compliance will be encouraged by the threat of the introduction of an upper age limit for treatment if the NHS is overwhelmed.

I would like to point out that Dominic Cummings is apparently conversation with Deliveroo and Uber to deliver food the elderly.

Or it could be an alert from the GP surgery advising him to?

Don't be ridiculous.

@geekchicz obviously some people have care needs or whatever and the govt or anyone won't expect them not to do/have what's needed.

My Mums partner has had no such text and he is 71 hmm

It's not like all over 70 yr olds are on a special text alert system.

It's an idea with merits. But also with massive social consequences, especially on people with caring responsibilities.
Many older people care for a spouse.
Many older people live alone.
Many have little family support.

Well, on balance, I think it’s better to ask the elderly to stay at home and allow our children to confuse their education uninterrupted.

None of it is ideal. It’s a balance.

WHY DOESN'T BORIS ACTUALLY INTRODUCE MEASURES TO PROTECT THE ELDERLY

This will be a government ploy - "a source" says 16 weeks, lots of debate/impossibility discussion - then BoJo announces 4 weeks and people comply much more readily.

It makes more sense than shutting the schools.
No they need to do both!

No it isn't. It not only stops them from getting the virus (what everyone is focussing on), but also stops them from spreading it around and killing other people. Nobody wants to be a killer.

It's not just the risk to them. It's also them being the risk.
