Am I the only one who finds the Coronovirus inconvenient more than anything?

My husband, daughter and I are all fit and healthy and had Disney booked for Easter. Now it’s looking like we can’t go which for us personally, is a total bugger. I can’t even get through on the lines to cancel and get my money back and have to leave it a week because the lines are jammed.

I went to the supermarket on Thursday and today to get hand wash and some other bits. The first was totally sold out of soap and pasta. The second...:it was like the apocalypse. No canned food.....no bread...the idea of hand wash, soap or shower gel was a joke and all the branston pickle was gone. Branston fucking pickle?!?!?

I over heard a lady saying she can’t get nappies for her kids because they are all gone.

Some kid sneezed at a flip out /trampoline place today and I swear I thought some of the parents were going to shoot him where he stood. The rate they were going on you’d think he’d been licking the hand rails or something.

If you turn the news on, all you hear is about covid (as if nothing else is happening in the world) and it’s so dramatic. Have you seen the screen the bbc put up with covid plastered across it? It’s highly inflammatory and not even slightly reassuring.

Before people lay into me about being selfish I totally get why SOME portions of the community are worried. I get it because my father and father in law are elderly and both suffer with serious health issues and presumably you and they would implement the measures they can but normal people in a similar situation to me have lost their fucking minds!!!!

I said this yesterday but people do realise that in order to stop this from spreading, everyone needs to be able to access some form of soap. What good is it doing if you are wading into your bathroom, knee deep in it all when the rest of the world hasn’t got any 🙄

Or that they can’t/won’t fucking read. Like I’ve said. It’s not rocket science and plus, other people seem to manage quite soundly 😂

sadatchristmas1 · 14/03/2020 20:07

Branson pickle has been recalled due to the possibility of plastic in it. No panic buying involved there at least Grin

Sotiredofthislife · 14/03/2020 20:07

I’m curious, who has been telling your child they are going to die?

No one. I hope. But he understands his condition, can hear and understand the news, and is subject to god knows what in school amongst his peers. Not rocket science, is it?

Discodisco2020 · 14/03/2020 20:10

@Sotiredofthislife sorry to hear this, and despite reassurance from you your child still thinks they are going to die? Have you considered counseling?

Cookiecrumble8888 · 14/03/2020 20:19

They says there's enough supply of everything so why are they not capping people so they o my can buy two bread loaves etc? Running out of bread etc is ridiculous. Children won't be able to have lunch soon. It's getting scary.

I got 100 nappies for my son but they will only last 5 weeks. I hope this all gets brought back under control soon. I was saving up for our holiday next year and got our shopping down £30 a week. Now I'm adding extra bits of food and sticking it on the fridge because everyone's being greedy and soon I won't be able to get the things my kids will eat. I hate the feeling of not knowing what's going to run out. What will be next? Sanitary towels? Baby wipes? How long will calpol be unavailable? How are people going to manage if handsoap etc doesn't restock. No toilet rolls etc. People have been completely selfish. But it's hardly surprising considering Boris isn't doing alot. We are being shown every single new case. Boris told us we will loose loved ones. He's not doing what other countries are recommending or doing. When they do announce we can't go out I guess people will feel better knowing they have essentials and meals etc. It's a horrible thought not being able to get medicine and sanitary products or nappies.

It's an absolute shit time. Boris needs to be getting rules in place about shopping so that people relax and stop being greedy. It seems like the shelves are staying empty of pasta etc now.

Helmetbymidnight · 14/03/2020 20:22

FFS, discodisco - I thought you'd signed off?

Discodisco2020 · 14/03/2020 20:23

No, still v intrigued by your story

hoovermyrug · 14/03/2020 20:29

If I had to take my kids to flip out I'd probably be wondering what I was doing with my life as well. I suspect your tone deaf flippancy might shift in a few weeks. Grow up.

Helmetbymidnight · 14/03/2020 20:37

my story is v intriguing to you?

umm o-kayyyy

SleepyNightOwl · 14/03/2020 20:43

sorry to hear this, and despite reassurance from you your child still thinks they are going to die? Have you considered counseling?

The thing with sick children is they aren’t stupid. They know they can die so why would someone telling them they won’t, require them when they know as a fact it could possibly kill them? I have a young child with immune issues, still too young to understand the way an older child would but I imagine as she starts to learn and become independent she will need to know the risks and how to be careful etc. She will need to know what to look out for within her body and understand the signs it’s giving her so she can communicate with me or as she’s older live alone with it. I don’t think I will keep her sheltered from her reality.

Obviously counselling is good but it can never take away that worry completely. Especially in our case where we have been told to keep our kid off school and away from crowds for at least the next four weeks. For some people it’s quite a scary time.

idontlike789 · 14/03/2020 20:50

Of the latest deaths in the UK, eight were men aged over 80 and all but one were known to have had underlying health conditions.
Copied this from the bbc news just now about the recent deaths now please stop panicking.
And reassure your child she is not going to die .

Notthemessiah · 14/03/2020 20:55

I'm sure the doctors in Italy having to decide who gets treated (and maybe lives) and who doesn't (and almost certainly dies) find the the virus inconvenient and annoying too. I imagine they'd much rather be in Disneyland as well.

Starbuck8419 · 14/03/2020 21:33

@hoovermyrug my child being really entertained by trampolines at a party doesn’t make me assess my life. What a total twazzock you are

OP posts:
Starbuck8419 · 14/03/2020 21:34

@Notthemessiah I suspect they would as well! But it’s ok, if I get to go I’ll be hoping everyone dies so I can ride the rollercoasters quicker. Fuck me, people are just so idiotic here

OP posts:
Starbuck8419 · 14/03/2020 21:35

@Crafting1Queen I get this now!! It’s not a pineapple. You should of been here earlier to see the absolute yucks we had about it. Uhhh good times.

OP - I completely get where you are coming from. There are a lot of sanctimonious drama llamas all over social media. I just don't get the point of getting into a complete frothing panic over this, it really doesn't help. As for the feverish stockpiling, don't get me started.

We have had to cancel a holiday too, and now it is looking like I won't be able to visit my elderly mother in North America and I am very sad about that. It is tragic for some, but mostly massively inconvenient for many.

AlternativePerspective · 14/03/2020 21:52

It’s not the virus it’s the wall to wall coverage of it which has become far too much. The panic, the hysteria, the bullshit that is being plastered all over social media from this or that alleged dr or giving this or that crap advice, and everyone is an armchair scientist when actually it’s far too soon to know what works with certainty and what doesn’t.

The people panic buying and the rest buying up supplies so they can profit from them. Amazon currently have a 45 pk of toilet rolls on sale for £99. Shock I saw a picture on FB which said “so last month’s “be kind” has now changed to “fuck everyone else.” “ which seems very apt if the supermarkets are anything to go by.

Yes, it’s serious and is spreading, and it’s the great unknown. But this level of hysteria cannot be sustained, and the risk is that if people panic now they won’t use common sense when things get to a point that they need to.

On the plus side however this virus and the responses to it have been hugely beneficial to the environment. Travel restrictions and flight cancellations will have cut carbon emissions massively. But of course I will be criticised for saying that, even though climate change discussion was almost as prevalent prior to this.

Starbuck8419 · 14/03/2020 21:54

I’m very sorry to hear that and you are incredibly right in what you say.
Unfortunately, mumsnet seems to be filled to the rafters with people who have forgotten how to read, think and form coherent, logical responses. Everything is always picked apart to its last atom, argued, dissected till there’s nothing left and people constantly insert what they think/hope you are saying when it’s not true just to give verification for the fact they’ve randomly become triggered.

It’s weird.

OP posts:
Starbuck8419 · 14/03/2020 21:56

@AlternativePerspective I did see that today!!! It’s had its plus points then 😊

This. Younger patients are being prioritised for ventilators, with a cut off age of 60. That's not scaremongering, it's the reality. Any reasonable person should find that thought fucking horrific.

We're facing a global pandemic here, we have to adapt to a new normal for a while. Holidays to Disneyland should be at the bottom of people's priority list right now.

If you're frustrated and bored now when this has barely begun, I suggest you find new ways to amuse yourself.

amispeakingenglish · 14/03/2020 22:09

Starbuck8419

No as we don't know for sure as no testing and we are all well now. It was a few weeks ago before all the isolation news. We would not be infectious now. Daughter is a teacher and her whole department came down with it. Her boss said it was the worst illness she had ever had and she had sars before. My daughter has never been so ill either. We have autoimmune diseases and it seems that you have a strong immune system if you do. I have only had flu once in my life in the 1970s, Japanese flu. There are other virus around at the moment too, so without testing who can tell?? We should be able to get tests to see if we have the antibodies, then we would know.

Starbuck8419 · 14/03/2020 22:11

@Sakura7 “find new ways to amuse yourself” implies I originally found covid entertaining. That’s a strange insinuation.
Again, Disney was at the top of my list along with some other things I’ll admit. For reasons please refer to earlier posts.

Now who's putting words in others people's mouths. Fuck me, some people are so totally self absorbed around here, with no ability to think beyond their own tiny world.

Starbuck8419 · 15/03/2020 08:23

The lack of reading skills is astounding
