I'm going to Australia next week

So, who wants to come and tell me how selfish I am for travelling to Australia next week, via Singapore?

OP posts:
AutumnRose1 · 15/03/2020 05:04

Self isolation meaning you isolate wherever you plan to stay, or is there a quarantine facility at the airport?

OP has gone to family.

trixiebelden77 · 15/03/2020 05:06

I work in an Australian ICU. I will give you the same advice I gave my own family members in Scotland.

Please don’t.

WhatTheFronti · 15/03/2020 05:10

Presuming from press conference that you are to self isolate in accomodation.
I am believing aus gov think this measure will act as a deterrent to travellers/ unnecessary travel (big holiday = stuck in a novatel for two weeks = expensive and dull) rather than implementation of outright uk/us travel ban

onelostsoulswimminginafishbowl · 15/03/2020 05:13

I'm in NZ and my visa expires next month. I'm booked back to the UK via a 7 day stay in Australia with a friend and then Singapore to the the UK. I'm just going to wait a couple of weeks and see if anything changes. If not I will try and cancel my flights and hopefully get a refund so I can book a more direct route back. Failing that I will hang back in NZ on a tourist visa until all this is over.

MySonIsAlsoNamedBort · 15/03/2020 05:17

Bring toilet paper, you're going to need it.

user1471481356 · 15/03/2020 05:58

It would be such a miserable trip. 14 days isolation and then coming out to find nothing open, no tourist attractions, no events, no restaurants. Not able to buy food or essentials in the shops. Why bother. You will not get a friendly reception.

Tamberlane · 15/03/2020 06:01

I would really reconsider your plans.
Its two weeks' isolation on arrival for all travelers into Australia at the moment.
Make sure you have health insurance and hope they cover you in the case of a pandemic.

Australia's cases are increasing daily as well....and at the moment we are not testing the general populace, only people with direct contact because there isn't enough testing kits.
We have not yet closed the schools etc so the virus is likely already out and about in the community.

Its a ticking timebomb here.

I was meant to fly home to Ireland in April. I'm canceling as I don't want to be the cause of my elderly family members dying if they catch this disease either from me or due to meeting me(coming out of self isolation) and I see no joy in a trip home without being able to see my family.

Please think this through if you are going to be in contact with vulnerable people.

Tamberlane · 15/03/2020 06:05

Apologies that's from tonight that all travelers have to isolate after arrival.

BinkyandBunty · 15/03/2020 06:05

Also, if any of your hosts become ill and are required to self isolate, they will be instructed not to let visitors into their home.

Casino218 · 15/03/2020 06:11

I'm in Morocco currently. If the foreign office doesn't prevent you going then you can't get money back. But be prepared to go through a thermal body scanner at airport. Also Australia have now said everyone entering country must go into isolation for 14 days or you break the law! That would make it a no for me.

janeskettle · 15/03/2020 06:11

No, OP will need to isolate at home.

That means 2 weeks of not going anywhere. If anyone in the household she is visiting is high risk for complications of the virus or is 70+, she should not self-isolate in their home but in different accomodation.

It will be enforced with police action if needed.

noodlezoodle · 15/03/2020 06:13

Well yes, you're obviously being selfish but as you already know that, I'm not sure I understand the point of this post?

Harakeke · 15/03/2020 06:28

You'll have to self isolate for 14 days (as everyone has said). And won't you need to be separate from other people? Especially older/immune compromised people. You'll be coming into close contact with many people on the flight, it's not fair to expose someone on the other end who might be vulnerable.

Nostalgic14 · 15/03/2020 06:51

Please don't come to Australia at the moment.
You would have to be isolated from the family you are planning on staying with, to ensure you weren't endangering them. Do they have a guest suite for you (so you are not sharing there bathroom) ?
Otherwise I can't imagine they'd welcome you this year.

ChrissieKeller61 · 15/03/2020 06:58

I don’t think you’ll be going anywhere by next week

LaBelleSauvage123 · 15/03/2020 07:05

Australian residents on this thread - can you advise? DS (18) has been travelling in Oz since early Feb with two friends (he’s on a gap year before university). He was due to fly to Singapore next week and travel around SE Asia but his travel company has advised staying in Australia for another month and then reviewing. He has a 3 month visa. Should he stay, or come back now, while he still can?

Cornedbeefpie · 15/03/2020 07:10

LaBelle - get him home now would be my advice. Things are changing by the hour and it’s such a long way away if he’s stuck here long term.

janeskettle · 15/03/2020 07:15

Another vote for him coming home now.

Harakeke · 15/03/2020 07:19

Wouldn’t he be safer staying put where he is? There are fewer cases in Australia than the UK and it’s less populated.

Travelling puts you in close contact with people on flights and at airports. He should stay put.

LaBelleSauvage123 · 15/03/2020 07:21

Harakeke I am veering between this view and wanting him home.

Harakeke · 15/03/2020 07:24

Is he safe where he is? We have an 18 year old backpacker from the UK staying with us, we have told her she is welcome to stay on and see how things pan out. I think that’s safer than multiple flights etc.

Antipodeancousin · 15/03/2020 07:24

Not so smug now, hey? 14 days of isolation and $13,000 fine if non-compliant.
To the previous poster with a son in Australia, I would definitely not travel around Asia at the moment. I believe it is possible for health insurance to refuse to pay out for coronavirus related healthcare costs if you knowingly travelled to a high risk area.

Userwhatevernumber · 15/03/2020 07:26

Are the restrictions likely to be in place come July? Obviously I am now not going on my trip to Aus next Friday but because it’s self isolation not travel ban I won’t get my money back and so the best option without losing loads of money would be to change the flights, so was thinking of changing flights to July

onalongsabbatical · 15/03/2020 07:28

LaBelleSauvage123 honestly if I were you I'd want him home now. This is unlikely to get any better anywhere in the near future. If he stays he could be stuck and no-one knows for how long. Chance for him to get back now? Use it.

MarshaBradyo · 15/03/2020 07:30

You might be put in quarantine.

Or if not could be another case they get off the plane.
