I'm going to Australia next week

So, who wants to come and tell me how selfish I am for travelling to Australia next week, via Singapore?

I’m not going to tell you what to do although I suspect a few will be along in a minute. I have a friend who’s travelling to NZ to see her brand new GC at the weekend. I really hope she can go for her sake but I just don’t know whether she will be able to now. My Easter hols look like they’re cancelled and I haven’t been away anywhere for so long I’m.pretty upset. Depressing and worrying times. I expect I’ll be slated for even mentioning a holiday!

SnowsInWater · 13/03/2020 11:06

Don’t think there will be a problem if you are just transiting through Changi although Qantas are re-routing their flights soon to avoid Singapore. Welcome to Oz 😊

Reallyweirditems · 13/03/2020 11:06

Thank you for your measured response Thistimeofyear.

It is distressing and worrying, no doubt about it. Some people just seem to have lost the plot about the whole thing.

Unless my flights are cancelled, I will be travelling. This is my only chance to get to see my family. It's now or never.

Thank you SnowsInWater Smile I'm very excited!

I'm flying with Singapore Air, so no change of flights at the moment. Stopping stopping in Changi.

I'm just fed up of people on MN telling others how selfish they are because they're getting on with their lives!

OP posts:
thistimeofyear · 13/03/2020 11:10

Good luck hope you get to see your family Smile

Reallyweirditems · 13/03/2020 11:11

Thank you thistimeofyear. I hope you get to have your holiday soon, something that look forward to! Thanks

Good for you, have a fantastic trip.

thistimeofyear · 13/03/2020 11:13

Thanks - I forgot to mention watching Question Time last night it seems that most countries (apart from UK) are checking your temp on arrival. So I assume if you’ve no symptoms and no temp you’re good

dingit · 13/03/2020 11:17

If you're flights going, I would be going. Enjoy

FairyBatman · 13/03/2020 11:19

I understand why you’re going but genuinely what will you do if you get stuck out there?

MoltonSilver · 13/03/2020 11:22

Do you have health insurance to cover you if you get sick while you're there?

Reallyweirditems · 13/03/2020 11:23

FairyBatman I can stay with my family.

OP posts:
Reallyweirditems · 13/03/2020 11:25

MoltonSilver I have travel insurance.

Can anyone tell me if you can catch CV twice? Does anyone know if -once you catch it and you get over it ( after 7 days isolation etc etc) are you then ok and not a super spreader and or can’t catch it again - just wondering - prob in wrong thread but hey ho!

potter5 · 13/03/2020 11:46

I too am travelling to Oz early April with Singapore Airlines. They did change my return flight which meant a layover at Singapore airport of 11 hours! I changed to come back a day earlier.

Presumably they can't fill all the flights?

Anyway I am definitely travelling unless told not by anyone.

Have a lovely holiday OP. Smile

Mlou32 · 13/03/2020 11:53

Personally I wouldn't, mainly to protect more vulnerable people but I can kind of understand why people would go ahead with their travel plans, even if it is from a more selfish perspective. I was thinking of flying back home (as my mum is immunocompromised and I want to make sure she's ok (she will be, I'm just a worrier) but I'm not going to because I could become a vector and it could then be passed on to people who live or work with the elderly/disabled and have catastrophic consequences.

I know we all have personal responsibility but I really think it is up to the government to step in and put more robust measures in place to protect the country. People just aren't good at weighing up the pros and cons, or caring enough about their actions and how they will affect others.

Enjoy your trip, keep an eye on travel updates as things could change from hour to hour.

popcorndiva · 13/03/2020 12:17

We are meant to be going in 3 weeks with Singapore Airlines and I am resigned that borders will be closed by then. Our flights are pretty full so won't be cancelled due to demand but Australia may just say no

Upsetting as it's been booked for a year

MaitlandGirl · 13/03/2020 12:21

Bring toilet roll!

Reallyweirditems · 13/03/2020 12:25

PopcornDiva if Australia decides to close the borders, then Singapore Airlines will have to cancel the flights, won't they? Meaning we can get a refund? Or am I talking rubbish?

OP posts:
DroppedBoxxedRuth · 13/03/2020 12:37

I'm in Aus and while I think you're crazy travelling so far at this time I don't see a problem with it if you're ok with it 🤷

We are going to Dublin in June for a month and only cancelled flights would stop us but we're going to family and would be fine to be 'stuck' there.

How long are you here for and where are you going?

popcorndiva · 13/03/2020 12:44

@reallyweirditems yes their waiver policy is if visas have been cancelled. My travel insurance will only refund if flights are cancelled, borders closed.
SIA are being a bit vague as I can't actually go later in the summer so couldn't just delay my holiday

FairyBatman · 13/03/2020 12:54

@Reallyweirditems wouldn’t you risk losing you job if your 2 week holiday turns into 6 though, and if you’re stuck out there would you get paid.

Maybe I‘m too much of a worrier Confused

Reallyweirditems · 13/03/2020 13:00

Popcorndiva I also can't rearrange to another time unfortunately.

FairyBatman You're not too much of a worrier. If I worked then it would be different, but I don't, so it's not a problem.

OP i am also due to be going to Australia on 27th.....

It is a 30th birthday gift from my best friend who lives out there to visit her and her family.

I’m gutted and so scared about this whole thing.

I have got travel insurance (I hope it will pay out ok because my friends husband booked and paid for the flight for me but in my name)

I am mostly worried about having to go and self quarrentine or going and everything be shut and not able to explore anywhere.

I am watching with anxiety to see if the Aus government bans UK from coming or if flight is cancelled.

But if not, I also will be traveling. I am aware others think it’s selfish, but I cannot afford to lose this trip of a lifetime and there is also risk of catching or transmitting it over here.

I will stay away from vulnerable relatives when I get back I think, like my dad and grandma, but then again, they are also likely to pick it up over here!
