I'm going to Australia next week

So, who wants to come and tell me how selfish I am for travelling to Australia next week, via Singapore?

OP posts:
Userwhatevernumber · 13/03/2020 13:07

I’m going with Etiad

ajandjjmum · 13/03/2020 13:39

We're due to fly out on 1/4 to visit DS, who moved to Sydney last year.

We've been thinking about whether to go or postpone - really based upon the length of the flight, and likelihood of someone on board carrying CV19.

However, I just seen this morning that BP medication can make you more vulnerable, and as a user of Ramipril, I'm thinking that I should just stay at home and try and wait this thing out.

It is absolutely frightening - trying to hold on to a bit of commonsense, so that my BP doesn't go haywire anyway! Grin

I flew in from Turkey a few days ago, was there working and airports both ends were full. People are still flying and travelling. Lots of people with masks on. I was worried but had to get home. I wish there was more guidance on flying. I know some places have been deemed to be risky but what about everywhere else?

My friend is flying to Belgium tomorrow for a surgical procedure and seems fine about it all.

MaitlandGirl · 15/03/2020 03:48

Just been announced anyone arriving in Australia from midnight tonight (Sunday 15th March) will have to self isolate for 14 days.

mrbob · 15/03/2020 03:55

You will spend 2 weeks of your holiday self isolating. When you get back you will probably have to do the same.

TheLastWispsOfSun · 15/03/2020 04:03

You will have to self quarantine for 2 weeks and if you are staying with family then they will have to self quarantine too. Honestly if you can postpone this trip then I would if I was you. Self quarantine literally means not leaving the house at all for two solid weeks.

You are likely to get a very lukewarm reception there - they are heading into winter and people are extremely concerned.

Weenurse · 15/03/2020 04:10

Just seen that there a 14 day self isolation thing on arrival.

user1471481356 · 15/03/2020 04:11

Please don’t. We would rather tourists stay away. It won’t be enjoyable spending the first 2 weeks alone in a room, unable to see anyone or do anything.

BinkyandBunty · 15/03/2020 04:12

I suggest you bring a big pack of toilet roll with you to soften the impact of your 2 week isolation period on your poor hosts!

Thepigeonsarecoming · 15/03/2020 04:15

I don’t think you are selfish, you’ve spent money and your at no greater risk to yourself or others anywhere at this point. I do think though they’ll close their borders before then though 😢

TeaAndDarkToast · 15/03/2020 04:15

.

NothingButTheOceanBlue · 15/03/2020 04:19

I think you should really do the right thing and postpone. Unnecessary travel really is a selfish act at this time. We are all facing inconvenience and missing out on stuff we would rather be doing, but that's life and its a small price to pay.

I am in Hong Kong and have not travelled since Christmas, I don't plan to travel until this whole thing resolves.

I have friends and work colleagues in Australia and people are worried. They are heading into winter. People will not want to see you.

AgentPrentiss · 15/03/2020 04:28

You will have to isolate for 14 days on arrival.

Silly time to travel honestly. I love travelling and am disappointed I may not get to this year, but it’s a giant waste of money when everything will inevitably close and you will be stuck inside for two weeks. Hmm

littlebitnonchalant · 15/03/2020 04:30

Ok but you will be required to self isolate for 14 days when you get here.

Pixxie7 · 15/03/2020 04:31

They don’t know if you get immunity and there was a case a couple of weeks back where someone got it a second time.

eaglejulesk · 15/03/2020 04:35

@thistimeofyear - I hope your friend has arrived in NZ already, as anyone getting here from overseas from midnight tonight will have to self-isolate for 14 days!

cantfindausername2 · 15/03/2020 04:36

Our PM just announced anyone arriving in Aus needs to self isolatr for 14 days.

Lynda07 · 15/03/2020 04:39

Not a question of selfishness, I doubt you will be allowed to go and honestly don't know why you want to with things as they are at the moment.

Whichoneofyoudidthat · 15/03/2020 04:40

I think by the time you come back again, you’ll have to self isolate in the UK.

GADDay · 15/03/2020 04:40

From midnight tonight, you will have to self isolate. As of 1pm that's the law. On Tuesday the government will discuss further measures. It is likely that wider measures will be implemented as in France and Spain.

People here are nervous. Many public facilities are closed/closing.

Not a good time to visit.

Unless my flights are cancelled, I will be travelling. This is my only chance to get to see my family. It's now or never.
......

Why is it now or never? Will they or you not be around in a few months time?

midsomermurderess · 15/03/2020 04:43

You are just an attention-seeking pranny. Who cares, fly out, don't.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 15/03/2020 04:59

Seems like a odd time to travel.
14 days in self isolation on arrival of which they are still deciding on the penalties for anyone who doesn’t follow them.
Plus a large amount of places are closing or restricting numbers.

janeskettle · 15/03/2020 04:59

You are going to be isolated, apparently, as per news this afternoon AU time. All visitors. 14 days self isolation.

janeskettle · 15/03/2020 05:00

Argh, should have read the second page!
