AIBU to go for a run if I am self isolating?

Am expecting to be shot down in flames here, but bear with me....

Self isolation advice is to stay at home for a week and not even go out for a walk. I totally get why public places should be avoided etc, but given the risk of airbourne transmission is being with 2-3ft of someone for 15 mins this wouldn't happen if I went for a run or a walk. It would be very easy for me to go for a walk in a rural area / woods etc where I would be unlikely to see many people, and I certainly wouldn't be getting close to them.

OP posts:

Seven days is all that is being asked if people. Seven days. That is nothing. No wonder the virus is winning with all these virus sympathisers around.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 13/03/2020 10:55

OMG the level of hysteria on this thread is ridiculous. The OP hasn't even said she has coronavirus and if she did I doubt she'd even feel like going for a run! She probably has a bit of a sniffle. Like I do. I went to the gym this morning so shoot me.

mement0mori · 13/03/2020 10:55

No, because at that point it's not a "new, continuous cough"
The advice is perfectly clear

Well the advice isn't that clear if people are under the impression that you only need to self-isolate for only 7 days from the start of any symptoms and you are fine cease self-isolation after a 7 day period even if you are still experiencing symptoms. If you have a new continuous cough that lasts more than 7 days that that could mean that you have not cleared the virus.

Inthepurplerain · 13/03/2020 10:55

Do you really think you’ll be alone in that idea? @ BowermansNose

UYScuti · 13/03/2020 10:56

those who are at risk of complications should self isolate everyone else carry on as normal so that the virus runs its course becomes endemic and we develop immunity at the population level

StealthMama · 13/03/2020 10:56

I think you either isolate or you don't. No point going half arsed at it as that's how it spreads.

It's 7 days,really you cant manage?

UYScuti · 13/03/2020 10:57

what about all the people who are carrying the disease but don't know they've got it and don't know they should self isolate?
should we be testing every single person, what if that results in everyone having to self isolate?

Inthepurplerain · 13/03/2020 10:58

@chocolatesaltyballs22

Which parts are you calling hysteria?

It is government advice to stop the spread of these rhinoviruses/coronaviruses full stop, not just the new coronavirus.

It is to protect our healthcare system so it can compete with numbers of infection of new coronavirus.

What part of this is so difficult to understand?

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 13/03/2020 10:59

My point is that she hasn't even said she has coronavirus symptoms.

jasjas1973 · 13/03/2020 11:01

Sweat, touching surfaces like gates and the exterior of your door as you go in/out.

Perhaps we need CV19 to sweep through the country and kill off these stupid selfish twats.

Put your dog down if you can't look after it without putting others at risk.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/03/2020 11:01

those who are at risk of complications should self isolate everyone else carry on as normal so that the virus runs its course becomes endemic and we develop immunity at the population level

Which bit about - these are the rules - are you misunderstanding to be - here, why don't you make up your own fucking rules?

Inthepurplerain · 13/03/2020 11:02

She has been advised to self isolate, it doesn’t make a difference if she has symptoms or not.
Some people have symptoms that resemble a sniffle, some people don’t have any at all- yet can still spread this to the vulnerable.

I cannot believe you’re bragging about going to the gym and spreading your germs.

As long as you’re alright though - exactly the reason vulnerable people will die in this situation. Because you think the advice there to protect is just hysterical.

cologne4711 · 13/03/2020 11:05

many of us have dogs and no gardens Missing the point of the thread but why would you have a dog if you don't have a garden/outside space (unless there is a park across the road).

daisypond · 13/03/2020 11:06

I went to the gym this morning so shoot me.
If only.

Neverender · 13/03/2020 11:06

How would you be 'isolating' if you went for a run/walk? If we all did that then there would be zero point - just follow the advice, which is: DON'T LEAVE YOUR HOME

Witchlight · 13/03/2020 11:06

I read a thread yesterday, ridiculing the government’s “lack of action”, many people saying why are we doing so little and don’t they think the public can deal with it and they don’t care about the more vulnerable......

Obviously the government got it spot on, if this thread is anything to go by.

They have asked to to stay in doors for 7 days if you have a new persistent cough, or a high temperature FULL STOP.

PerfectParrot · 13/03/2020 11:08

if people are under the impression that you only need to self-isolate for only 7 days from the start of any symptoms and you are fine cease self-isolation after a 7 day period even if you are still experiencing symptoms.

People are under that impression because that is precisely what was said by the experts at the press conference yesterday. After 7 days you are no longer as infectious, even if still symptomatic, so it is fine to come out of isolation.

PlanDeRaccordement · 13/03/2020 11:10

Yes, YABU

womaninatightspot · 13/03/2020 11:12

I am isolated already stay at the top of a track that no one but me comes up in the middle of nowhere. Appreciate not everyone has that luxury but it'd quite frankly be ridiculous to confine the dog and I to indoors when the closest I'd come to another person is 300m minimum and driving in their car.

I don't need to self isolate atm just naturally have hermit tendencies

LolaSmiles · 13/03/2020 11:12

The OP hasn't even said she has coronavirus and if she did I doubt she'd even feel like going for a run! She probably has a bit of a sniffle. Like I do. I went to the gym this morning so shoot me.

So in other words "going to the gym is more important than the health of others because who cares if a few people are hospitalised, as long as I get my workout in".

As the image one of my friends shared on Facebook this morning said, self isolation isn't as much about keeping the young/fit/healthy safe because they will probably fight it off, but keeping others safe.

I'm asthmatic, not severely thankfully, but others with more severe asthma could have their lives in danger because people decide they just fancy a walk, must go to the gym, etc.

beingarayofsun · 13/03/2020 11:13

@cologne4711 bingo 🐕

EmpressSuiko · 13/03/2020 11:17

If you have the virus or suspect you have it then no, you shouldn’t leave your house at all, it stays in the air for three hours, in that time, despite the risk being low, you could infect another person, a person who could be vulnerable to developing severe symptoms of elderly or living with health issues.

BothALarkAndAnOwl · 13/03/2020 11:19

@UYScuti *’those who are at risk of complications should self isolate everyone else carry on as normal so that the virus runs its course becomes endemic and we develop immunity at the population level’.

Aside from that not yet being official advice, did it occur to you that many of the most vulnerable NEED to be able to leave home to access essential medical treatment? To use the example that’s currently preoccupying me, a cancer patient with a high grade aggressive tumour can’t just hold off on chemotherapy until all this is over.

tiledfloors · 13/03/2020 11:19

@CherryPavlova my stance still stands. Self isolate means just that. Not I think my field will be fine.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 13/03/2020 11:19

At the gym yesterday I made a point of wiping down any surface I was going to touch before using a machine. I'm feeling 100% but too many people with sniffles will still go and spread crap everywhere. I got a few dirty looks but couldn't care less. And of course I wiped everything down again before moving on.
