AIBU to go for a run if I am self isolating?

narisha99 · 13/03/2020 08:33

Am expecting to be shot down in flames here, but bear with me....

Self isolation advice is to stay at home for a week and not even go out for a walk. I totally get why public places should be avoided etc, but given the risk of airbourne transmission is being with 2-3ft of someone for 15 mins this wouldn't happen if I went for a run or a walk. It would be very easy for me to go for a walk in a rural area / woods etc where I would be unlikely to see many people, and I certainly wouldn't be getting close to them.

It is postulated that one reason for the success of the human species is our ability to hunt down prey via long distance running (persistence hunting) so pushing yourself to extremes in this way is in many ways an essential part of the human story!

MintySpud · 13/03/2020 12:26

Damn Paula Radcliffe, selfishly shitting herself and leaving that for people to deal with.

Mumsnet virtue-signalling at its finest.

I will just note, before I hide the thread, that in the UK it is fairly easy to regulate your temperature during a long run, and not overhydrate, as the weather tends to be pretty shit for most of the year. Also, someone else may produce more saliva (men produce more than us, for instance) or be more susceptible to digestive problems than you. If you want to pat yourself on the back or get on your high horse over that, knock yourself out.

Cohle · 13/03/2020 12:28

I am definitely on my high horse about not choosing activities that lead me to regularly vomit in public. Vile.

MintySpud · 13/03/2020 12:30

I suppose you just leave your vomit where it is and carry on with your day, not giving a shit?

No, I personally don't, as it happens, on the rare occasion that this happens. But you are clearly enjoying your narrative so much, it is a shame to disabuse you.

Inthepurplerain · 13/03/2020 12:30

She didn’t shit herself @MintySpud she needed to go, and relieved herself so she could win the marathon.

There is absolutely no reason to be vomiting when you’re running, or spitting.
You trying to give yourself a cardiac arrest?

chocolateandpinkgin · 13/03/2020 12:30

LOL, you're seriously clutching at straws now aren't you. I get that sometimes people are caught short. It's still disgusting, but I accept that sometimes it can't be helped. But there's a difference between being caught short, and knowingly pushing yourself to the point of vomiting or purposely shitting in public. It's really not the same thing. Off you go and hide the thread though Hmm

evilharpy · 13/03/2020 12:31

It's not virtue signalling to object to having to avoid puddles of vomit while out and about. It's hardly pleasant.

MintySpud · 13/03/2020 12:32

Regularly? I said occasionally. Nice reading skills.

chocolateandpinkgin · 13/03/2020 12:36

Thought you were hiding the thread Grin

To be fair, I'd probably happily shit myself in public if I was about to win the London Marathon. I'll let her off on that one. However, I stand by my opinion that spitting and vomiting whilst running are grim.

LolaSmiles · 13/03/2020 12:37

Mumsnet virtue-signalling at its finest
No Mumsnet virtue signalling at all, just a range of runners who think pushing yourself to the point of vomiting in the street is disgusting.

There's a spot of common sense in training that says 'I'm starting to not feel so good so I shall stop, cool down, slow down, take some more water/sports drink'. If after doing all of that someone still feels unwell then it can't be helped, but no runner I know would describe vomiting in the street as an occupational hazard of running.

Selmababies · 13/03/2020 12:37

@dosfordarkchocolate
Some people will not be able to self isolate. Animals need to be looked after, food needs to be bought and medicine may be required.

It will be difficult for almost everyone to self isolate. It's up to every individual to find a way to do it.
I can't believe the number of people on this thread who clearly have no intention whatsoever of following the basic advice issued by the government.

No one is so special that the rules don't apply to them. Just follow the advice and stop being so arrogant!

dottiedodah · 13/03/2020 12:38

I took self Isolating to mean just that! No going out for a week ,no dog walking ."nipping out for a pint of milk/paper" running ,and so on .Doesnt matter whether early or late ,you still run the risk of infecting anyone you come across ! The big freeze had black ice for around 10 days ,and my then dog had to make do with playing ball in the garden .They said today that if we go into the garden , One at a time is fine but no more. And my vets say not to come to the surgery if feeling unwell ,and only one person at a time .What is the point of stating the plans only for people to think it doesnt apply to them !

Isla727 · 13/03/2020 12:41

Only do this if you're guaranteed to see nobody. Also don't overdo it in case you do come down with it.

MintySpud · 13/03/2020 12:49

Lola, I have never vomited "in the street" or claimed that that was necessary to running.Confused

Chocolate, I did hide the thread but I get summoned back each time some twat tags me.

walkwalk · 13/03/2020 12:50

Assuming you have been advised to self isolate it is absolutely not okay and just one reason is if anything happens to you resulting in needing medical assistance you have now probably infected a much needed ambulance crew who now have to go into isolation when we need them most. Get over yourself OP I have a young baby who won't.bloody.sleep unless pushed outside in buggy and we are doing what we can to manage our self isolating.. it sucks massively but needs must.

Ginkypig · 13/03/2020 12:50

This is why they have not shut the uk down like other countries, because even in a small self isolation people can't follow the rules.

This is serious. Far more serious than some of you seem to believe, When have you heard a leader tell us to get ready because some of our family members will die?

I'm not panicking or panic buying or hysterical about it. I'm just being practical that this is happening and we all have to do our little bit to help.

I knew there would be some who would ignore or manipulate the rules put in place but I am surprised at how common this seems to be. Or is going to be.

These rules aren't going to stop the spread we're already too late for that. All the government are hoping to do is slow it enough that the NHS will cope.

sassbott · 13/03/2020 12:51

This thread shows a few things

  1. Just how selfish and self serving some people are
  2. how stupid people are
  3. this is exactly why the government are doing what they’re doing. They know too many members of the public have zero capacity for self regulation if it interferes with their wants and needs. A China style shut down simply won’t work because of how many people think the basic rules don’t apply to them (they do).
  4. Thinking displayed on this thread is exactly why Italy is on full lockdown. They declared the north was locked down before enforcement was in place. What happened? Selfish people belted it to the south from the north before enforcement kicked in. Outcome? Whole country is now on lockdown with the medical system near collapse.

Some people on this thread really need to away and analyse their priorities and thinking. Utterly selfish and self serving. The rules and guidelines are clear. It’s 7 days FgS. Have a word with yourselves

sassbott · 13/03/2020 12:55

I’ll add. For those deliberately flouting clear guidance (in black and white). One word. Karma. When an elderly family member dies from this in your family. Or an elderly member is not prioritised for medical care because someone ‘younger’ needs it. You will be the people who caused it.

Have a word with yourselves and realise just how serious and deadly the situation we find ourselves in is. Moderate yourselves and self isolate! Fgs.

Some of you disgust me.

Honeywort · 13/03/2020 12:57

The thing about the dog walking thing (and other walks at times when no one is about) is that yo would need to make sure you don’t touch stuff either - so no opening the gate into the park or opening the dog poo bin, or pressing the pedestrian crossing button etc etc etc. Obviously gloves would help here but it’s something to be aware of.

UYScuti · 13/03/2020 13:04

You seem to be implying that in China the shutdown worked because Chinese people have a superior 'capacity for self-regulation' ?
Personally I think it worked because they live under an authoritarian regime and the government will send out a team of 'enforcers' if they don't do as they're told

HavenDilemma · 13/03/2020 13:16

@chocolatesaltyballs22 The incubation period is 14 days! So even if she has zero symptoms, if she went for a run, she could STILL infect someone potentially!!!!

HavenDilemma · 13/03/2020 13:23

@MintySpud You sound charming and graceful Hmm

BIWI · 13/03/2020 13:24

^I think it should be safe to run if you run with the wind behind you?
(Or should you run against the wind?)^

This is the single-most stupid thing posted so far

UYScuti · 13/03/2020 13:27

Thank you BIWI, I'm so flattered 🥰

sassbott · 13/03/2020 13:32

I know how China did what they did. Because of their regime. But it worked.

Democracy is brilliant. But you really cannot mitigate for stupid and/ or selfish in a democracy.
Even the RSPCA (the one organisation whose number one job it is to protect and promote the well-being of pets) is giving very clear guidance. Don’t walk your pets.

I mean my mind actually boggles.
