AIBU to go for a run if I am self isolating?

Am expecting to be shot down in flames here, but bear with me....

Self isolation advice is to stay at home for a week and not even go out for a walk. I totally get why public places should be avoided etc, but given the risk of airbourne transmission is being with 2-3ft of someone for 15 mins this wouldn't happen if I went for a run or a walk. It would be very easy for me to go for a walk in a rural area / woods etc where I would be unlikely to see many people, and I certainly wouldn't be getting close to them.

Plus many of us have dogs and no gardens.

So? Then you stay at home and your dog toilets in the house - use cat litter or puppy pads or newspaper or train them to go in the bathroom or the bath or the shower for a while. It won't kill them.

Nobody's saying it's ideal or pleasant to deal with, but this is a global pandemic. If people can't comply with such a basic instruction for a week then no wonder so many other countries are enforcing quarantine and lockdowns for people.

chocolateandpinkgin · 13/03/2020 10:35

Yes, YABU. It's self isolation. The clue is in the words FFS. I can't believe the amount of people saying it's fine. What if you went for a run and then fell ill or collapsed and someone had to call the emergency services? (Yes ok it's unlikely, but not impossible). You've then put healthcare workers at risk when the NHS is already on it's knees.

I've had symptoms so I am self isolating. Am I annoyed I can't go out or can't go for a run? Yes, a bit (though I feel too crap to run to be honest). But I'm following the guidelines because I'm not a selfish arse and I don't want to put other people at risk.

I've already seen so many excuses for why people 'have' to go out when they should be self isolating. It needs to stop. You won't die from not going for a run, and dogs won't die from not being walked. I seriously can't get my head around this. No wonder we're in this position. Will it take half the population dropping dead for people to take this seriously?

Truly astounding that you are 100% certain that no one will be within 2 metres of you

Either that or you’re wearing a circular board around your waist with a diameter of 4.5m. Good luck getting into Aldi with that on Ha ha. I did say before I got the shops though.

However it turns you are right. It is Friday and I suppose nobody works Fridays and even more so at the moment.

I had the guy who came out of a building site - walked over the road to avoid him.

Then a guy with a shopping bag. Couldn't avoid him because it was a main road.

Then a postman came out of a house as I was passing - pavement quite wide there, so about 1.5m away.

Then a runner came past and overtook me really closely - I would have crossed the road in her shoes.

Crossed the road to avoid a lady coming the other way.

Then had to go in the road to avoid a lady coming the other way who decided she needed the whole pavement.

Finally got into town where people really didn't want to be avoided.

Lesson learnt!

chocolateandpinkgin · 13/03/2020 10:37

Completely agree @adaline. I can't get over the level of stupid and selfish, it's mind boggling. Yeah it's fine to go out, don't worry about putting people at risk, as long as your dog can have a shit that's the main thing Hmm

TheLadyAnneNeville · 13/03/2020 10:37

I’m another one with a dog to walk. I tend to walk in fields near our home and rarely see anyone else so, am thinking it’s Ok. I’d be careful and run in the early morning before people are out and about if I were you.

CherryPavlova · 13/03/2020 10:39

tiledfloors now you’re just being silly. No known method of transmission from dog faeces to shoe to random person six hours later. I think possibly three people in a week walk where we do, maybe less. Luckily I am less likely to catch it because of our lifestyle and certainly less likely to transmit it to anyone. We are thinking of closing off our village and the one down the road though because of the number of elderly residents.

Luckily, I do understand infection prevention and control and won’t be spreading the bugs. I’ll be working still to reduce the impact.

What do you find so hard to understand about self-isolation?

It doesn't mean "self isolate unless the dog needs to go out", or "self isolate unless you go a random empty field". It means stay at home. For seven days. That means no dog walks.

Your dog won't explode if he doesn't get a walk for a week. It might be harder for you to deal with him for a while but that's just life.

crazydiamond222 · 13/03/2020 10:40

If you do make sure you don't touch anything e.g pedestrian crossing buttons, railings etc and stay well away from others.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 13/03/2020 10:40

All the stupid, irresponsible selfish people who think the rules don’t apply to them, instead of posting on here please google what is happening in other European countries right now.

Because THAT is exactly what is coming the UK’s way. It’s just going to happen a little later on.

What don’t you understand about that?

This is a warlike situation, no more, no less, and anything we can do at this stage to help slow the spread of this disease is essential. Whether you and your peabrains like it or not.

Seriously, just grow up. If ever there were a time to adult, this is it. Please for everybody’s sake learn that now, and not in a few weeks time.

Well your "thinking" is wrong.

BlindAssassin1 · 13/03/2020 10:41

I don't believe I'd pose any form of risk to anyone at all...

There we go, that's everything we need to know about the level of stupid we're dealing with.

Stay home ffs.

Tatty101 · 13/03/2020 10:42

Wow, no you can't go for a run if you're self isolating. Look at the NHS guidance - why is your run more important than other people's lives?!
You could pick something up from the pedestrian crossing button and pass it on before you realise you're sick.

Community is key here. Please don't run outside when you've been told to isolate

UYScuti · 13/03/2020 10:42

If you're indoors should you keep the window shut, what if some of your virus goes out the window and kills someone?

User56781234 · 13/03/2020 10:46

Perhaps unwisely, I'm going to take the bait and respond.

I sincerely hope that the government and the NHS are playing close attention to this forum and to similar forums to assess the levels of selfishness and stupidity and seemingly deliberate determination by some members of the public to ignore the official advice and to put themselves and other people at risk. It is beyond belief.

Inthepurplerain · 13/03/2020 10:48

@UYScuti don’t be silly. No one is saying to do that, they are however giving advice on how to self isolate and giving the reasons why.
As soon as people selfishly ignore the advice, they’re putting others at risk and prolonging the outbreak.
Community and advice following are key. We all have a responsibility.

womaninatightspot · 13/03/2020 10:49

I stay out in the sticks and I would go for a walk with the dog. Literally no one about though.

daisypond · 13/03/2020 10:50

Some people ought to be locked in their homes. China did this. But we live in a democracy, not a police state, and it relies on people “thinking”. Some people’s thinking leaves a lot to be desired.

Peasfox · 13/03/2020 10:50

Jesus Christ no wonder it’s turned into a pandemic

daffodilsandblossom · 13/03/2020 10:52

This is exactly why the government can't yet close schools and tell people to stay at home indefinitely. The advice to stay home for 7 days with a cough and/or temperature only began today and already people are trying to go against advice and struggling to deal with what staying in your home means.

Do not leave your house, at all.

FourTeaFallOut · 13/03/2020 10:52

Look at the NHS guidance - why is your run more important than other people's lives?!

Because they are soooo special. So very special.

daisypond · 13/03/2020 10:52

@womaninatightspot. What is wrong with you? What bit of self-isolating do you not understand?

Inthepurplerain · 13/03/2020 10:53

‘ I’m another one with a dog to walk. I tend to walk in fields near our home and rarely see anyone else so, am thinking it’s Ok. I’d be careful and run in the early morning before people are out and about if I were you’

But it’s not ok.
If you’re sick you’ll be releasing virus droplets, no one knows how long covid19 can survive on a surface, but some viruses can survive for a number of hours.

If you have to self isolate, do just that- do not leave your house.

BowermansNose · 13/03/2020 10:53

I would go for a run, but then I live on the edge of a village, so I will be running down country lanes and across fields.

Chloemol · 13/03/2020 10:53

So to all of you saying it’s ok, go when no one is about etc, your WRONG. The advice is self isolation, that means NOT leaving the house for ANY reason. If we all did the going when no one is about malarkey, then as time goes on there won’t be any times cos the virus is still being shared by selfish idiots like you

This is precisely who Boris hasn’t closed schools, banned large groups etc because he knows people won’t self isolate properly and will just think oh it can’t happen to me and carry on

Albatross123 · 13/03/2020 10:54

NO, if self isolating the instructions given are that you cannot go for a walk.
