To ignore BJ's COBRA advice to send kids to school whilst Rep of Ireland has closed schools for 2 weeks

Just interested to know how others feel....

We are all expecting the exponential growth of the Covid 19 to take place in the next 1- 2 weeks.

I was gobsmacked by today's news that following the COBRA meeting, BJ has resolved to keep schools open.

Is anyone considering keeping their child/ren off school despite government briefing?

JeepersC · 13/03/2020 01:49

do I now send my child back in and risk him giving it to my partner or are we are risk of getting it anyway as we are visiting him in hospital

Stop visiting him in hospital

JeepersC · 13/03/2020 01:50

You didn't like the simple answer to your original question so you came up with a different question.

JeepersC · 13/03/2020 01:52

When people are this silly and NOTHING IS GETTING THROUGH, tbh I forgive Boris for saying Fuck it, let them at it.

Wheezycheezeball · 13/03/2020 01:53

YADNBU to keep your kids off against current UK advice.

I never fail to be surprised by British ignorance and their unfailing belief in morons like Johnson and Cummings. All the major counties in the world are turning to enforced social distancing and accepting that life will be very different for a while, why are our alleged experts (and I’m reading it’s more on the recommendations of behavioural scientists than actual medical scientists) saying this is wrong? I’d be willing to bet this is more a statement of our glorious independence from the EU (sarcasm) than actual safeguarding of the population.

How come we were two weeks behind Italy at the start of the week and now we’re 4? Has time changed on the island of Britain compared to everywhere else since Monday?

I cannot get over this county’s unwavering support of the economy and business over and above, and to the detriment of actual human beings. It’s nice to know the elderly and vulnerable are being written off as collateral damage, there’s nothing quite like knowing where society stands on your continued existence.

IDS lecturers and students are now working from home. Teaching and lectures are being delivered online. They have decided to lead by example. LSE will follow suit a week later...

JeepersC that was very rude I was asking for clarification not Because I didn’t like your answer I’ve been up for 24 hours because my partner is in hospital and seriously ill - there is no need for that. I’m tired and am simply like we all are - trying to get my head around a very difficult and changeable situation.

JeepersC · 13/03/2020 02:00

What are you asking for clarification on?

Ess201 · 13/03/2020 02:00

Even if I stop visiting him in hospital he still has to come out at some point so my question regarding school was not at all ignorant thanks - I’m an educated person and like to look at all eventualities that is all ... I think everyone should carry on the recent trend of “be kind”
More than ever right now ...

According to doctors in hong kong who treated coronavirus patients. They have discovered that some those that have recovered from the virus now have 20%- 30% lung damage. Whereby they can not breath properly and may gasp for air after walking.. On the same newspaper outlet they also reported that government research in china discovered the virus could effect male fertility but the gov quickly deleted this. For those who think it's just flu it's not that bad. It's probably true for majority who get it. But I think it's unfair uk gov is taking a defeatist attitude almost like they've given up. Its uncontainable, no point trying. Might aswell live with it. It's literally down to pot luck survival of the fittest.

JeepersC · 13/03/2020 02:04

Stop visiting him while he is in hospital. If he's that I'll,I'm surprised you're allowed. Make your own decision on what to do re child and school. There are arguments on both sides.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2020 04:56

Chaz
The chancellor laid out a £12bn Coronavirus funding package in the budget yesterday.

Excellent. That's 4 times the amount Ireland is setting aside for a population 13 times bigger than Ireland's.

mathanxiety · 13/03/2020 05:13

Ess201

If I were you I would keep your child home from school to avoid contagion, and also stop visiting your partner in hospital. Keep your child home after your partner comes home so his recovery won't be compromised. This is what social distancing requires. Your child will miss a lot of school, but this is small potatoes. Your partner is most likely in the category of vulnerable people right now.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 13/03/2020 07:10

Math
Ireland has a different health system, a different economic structure and a different pattern of population distribution.

Neither France nor Spain nor Italy locked down at the stage the UK is at with the epidemic.

LaureBerthaud · 13/03/2020 07:51

People who are not experts need to chill big time. I'm Irish, I live in London and I'm a medical doctor

Being a doctor doesn't make you an expert. Presumably the ROI PM and other european leaders are being advised by actual experts - as is the British PM.

Evanna13 · 13/03/2020 08:36

I do not think anybody knows what is the correct course of action. Governments are trying to do what is best for their unique countries. Only time will tell.

DowntownAbby · 13/03/2020 17:34

For all the deluded people who think they know better than Sir Patrick Vallance and Prof Chris Whitty, please point out which eminent virologists, epidemiologists and contagious disease experts around the world are criticising the U.K.'s plans?

The answer is there aren't any.

God knows why all you armchair experts think you know so much about the best course of action.

Before long we'll have those famous old MN tropes of 'trust your gut' and 'mother's instinct'.

You really must have high opinions of yourselves.

Nekoness · 13/03/2020 17:41

Why does an eminent expert need to publicly criticise another country’s government for that government to be wrong? They have absolutely no need to do so unless they choose to go on public record. That’s a bit like saying well if Trump is so bad, why aren’t other world leaders saying so publicly?

Nekoness · 13/03/2020 17:45

By the way, as a “deluded” person wearing a face mask today, I got some odd looks. Until the post office. Where a woman looking like death herself was merrily coughing away into her hand and the air, then touching every counter/machine etc. The lady who worked there only had a tissue to wipe down the surface. So that did fuck all good.

Suddenly, I didn’t look so “delusional” and couple people even asked where I bought my mask.

DowntownAbby · 13/03/2020 18:08

By the way, as a “deluded” person wearing a face mask today, I got some odd looks.

You would. It's pretty much accepted that they're useless in controlling airborne viruses in the general public. In fact they're worse than nothing in many cases.

WHO, PHE and the American CDC all say there's no evidence that they are in any way effective in virus control as far as protecting the wearer.

They may help in preventing a wearer infecting someone else but generally they're likely to do more harm than good.

Still, what do PHE know...

Nekoness · 13/03/2020 18:36

Find me a credible, scientific source that says they’re “useless”. You can’t because you’re spouting bullshit. Of course they don’t 100% prevent the virus but they absolutely do prevent you from a person coughing droplets of it on you!

You best run about the hospitals and let all the medical staff testing for the virus that the masks they are wearing are useless.

Nekoness · 13/03/2020 18:38

“In fact they're worse than nothing in many cases.”

In fact you’re making that up. All the articles say if you don’t wear them according to instructions, blah blah blah.

Yes taking paracetamol and ignoring the instructions is also worse than just not taking any paracetamol at all.

Thank god some of us have a bit more sense than you.

Harakeke · 13/03/2020 18:43

i”Of course they don’t 100% prevent the virus but they absolutely do prevent you from a person coughing droplets of it on you!”

Do you have something protecting your eyes as well? Because droplets can infect you that way too. And the reason why masks aren’t recommended for well people is that droplets will still enter most masks. They’re really for sick people to limit the spread of airborne droplets.

effingterrified · 13/03/2020 18:54

Either there's a big disinformation campaign going on, or a large number of the British people really are as stupid as Johnson thought.

Then again, they did vote for Brexit.

Have all those fans of Boris's approach not noticed that it is contrary to what the WHO recommends and what almost every country (including those with far fewer cases than us) is doing?

Do you all really believe that British biology is somehow different and superior to biology everywhere else in the world?

FFS.

Sakura7 · 13/03/2020 19:09

effingterrified

Fully agree. It's quite remarkable.

theflushedzebra · 13/03/2020 19:12

Agree Sakura and effing - it's unbelievable.

My brother's having shit at work about this - he says they have fingerprint scanners, and the management just look around dimly when anyone mentions coronavirus.... Shock Angry
