To ignore BJ's COBRA advice to send kids to school whilst Rep of Ireland has closed schools for 2 weeks

Just interested to know how others feel....

We are all expecting the exponential growth of the Covid 19 to take place in the next 1- 2 weeks.

I was gobsmacked by today's news that following the COBRA meeting, BJ has resolved to keep schools open.

Is anyone considering keeping their child/ren off school despite government briefing?

OP posts:
feeona123 · 12/03/2020 18:14

Nope

Hockeyboysmum · 12/03/2020 18:15

No not considering it. If schools all shut no one can work and things will just get worse. Wont help anyway as kids will just meet up elsewhere.

No.

RightOnTheEdge · 12/03/2020 18:15

No I won't be keeping them off

Fatted · 12/03/2020 18:15

No because I can't afford to take off a month unpaid.

Starbuck8419 · 12/03/2020 18:16

No. Unless they or immediate family have underlying health issues, why would you?

Whatsername177 · 12/03/2020 18:16

I'm relieved as a teacher - I've got three weeks worth of teaching before Yr11 will be revising. I am surprised. I expected to close.

opticaldelusion · 12/03/2020 18:16

Jeez, no. Why would you give yourself a logistical nightmare. What's your work situation, OP? Wi you find it straightforward to stay at home for a month with your kids?

terriblyangryattimes · 12/03/2020 18:17

Of course not!

Digitalash · 12/03/2020 18:17

I think that they are trying to control the spread and shutting schools right now wont help that, it is going to spread no matter what so if they delay drastic measures it should help cases develop at a manageable rate for the time being. That's what I understood of what they said anyway, happy to be corrected.

ssd · 12/03/2020 18:17

@Fatted whatll you do when they shut the school's then?

Leaannb · 12/03/2020 18:17

What good is closing down the schools for 2 weeks gloing to do?

AriadnesFilament · 12/03/2020 18:18

No, because I understand why they haven’t

PristineCondition · 12/03/2020 18:19

Nope, but I will take the next week to prepare for them to be off. Go to the library, look for stuff\ideas online.
I think they will close and soon but they will go in till then.

TheGirlFromStoryville · 12/03/2020 18:21

Yes. Ds is going in tomorrow but then from Monday he's off - he'll "have a cold" so will be self isolating. I think by the end of next week the schools will be closing anyway.

Really shocked that Boris didn't close them today.

LefttoherownDevizes · 12/03/2020 18:23

No

Jeezoh · 12/03/2020 18:23

No, because I do ‘t believe I know better than the experts.

Davros · 12/03/2020 18:23

It's not long until the easter holidays anyway

Katkincake · 12/03/2020 18:24

Nope, because I trust people who have studied epidemiology for years and can analyse societal impacts / benefits to make the right choices for our country more than a general populous who haven’t a clue.

Starbuck8419 · 12/03/2020 18:26

@TheGirlFromStoryville can I just ask why you’d keep them off?

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 12/03/2020 18:26

What good will closing schools for two weeks do? As they said today, this is going to last for months. Are you going to keep your children home for months?

Isthistrueor · 12/03/2020 18:27

No I am not keeping them off because I’m not hysterical. Also, can we stop posting about coronavirus outside of the specific coronavirus forum MN created. It’s getting so annoying now, I hide about five threads a day.

Fatted · 12/03/2020 18:27

@ssd realistically use my pitence of savings, then I will probably take out an overdraft to tide us over IF and when it comes to that. We could manage a month at most. This is why I don't want to do it voluntarily now when I don't see the need.

If I was sick, I would get full pay BTW.

Unfortunately, not every one lives in the lala land of SAHP, shit loads of savings and having family on tap to help out at the drop of a hat. There are people out there in more financially precarious positions than me. This is why people are objectiviting to school closures.

coconuttelegraph · 12/03/2020 18:27

No, and if you read all the other threads asking the same question I think you'll find a similar response.

tootiredtoconga · 12/03/2020 18:28

So are you planning to keep your DC shut in the house until all this is over then? They're just as likely to catch Covid-19 at the shops, the cinema, a café, a museum etc as they are at school.
