Someone posted saying Belgium had closed schools generally for pupils however for those who needed school open, they are running skeleton staff.

Allowing pupils and staff to remain out of the germ pool, thinning out those there, seems sensible to me.
IF a staff member in our school has it, they will pass it on without knowing to all the people in their vicinity so many staff and pupils and their parents and teaches children will all infect each other at.... Once.

WouldShouldCould · 13/03/2020 07:51

I just wish they would ban anything non essential, Mass gatherings etc.

NASUWT teachers Union has now updated their Coronavirus advice for their members. This will be a useful tool for members worried about lack of action in their schools, also a good one for worried parents to watch.

Was just watching Good Morning Britain and they were saying that the number of pp in the UK that have it is likely to be around a hundred thousand!
Must of missed that are you sure ?

Kuponut · 13/03/2020 07:52

I cough due to existing lung problems and it's getting very embarrassing in public.

Same here - although it's the aftermath of a bug I had well before Christmas and I get one that lingers every year. It's getting rather embarassing being out in public when a fit lands! (Does prove handy for getting more room on the train though!)

I've just had one of the kids to the GP for something completely unrelated and the receptionist was looking utterly terrified at what was to come as she opened the doors.

Well don't go to any mass gatherings then . Stay home but some of us are happy to carry on until told otherwise .

Random18 · 13/03/2020 07:54

I've never had flu - and don't get the flu vaccine - just saying.

I probably am lucky, but it is very rare for me to have anything more than a minor cold.

I saw the 100,000 thing too. Why would you think it's not that no?

It's everywhere.

confusedandtired99 · 13/03/2020 07:55

@MarshaBradyo my children won’t be able to go to school next week as they will have to self isolate for 7 days.

I full expect the Government to do a U-Turn in that time but if they don’t then I will not be able to take them to school the following week as I will have to self isolate.

We will then see how it goes during Easter.

If the push comes to the shove I will de-register them. I’d hate to do it but I will. We are luck that neither of them are in an exam year.

We are in the equivalent of giant measles party.

What I want too see is the evidence that once you've had it you are immune.

if I'm going to be sacrificed for the greater good. I need to see the evidence that it will work. Not that it would reassure my DC,DH and family I'd leave behind.

I've had bronchitis for weeks, just getting better now but still occasionally coughing. I get the odd corona joke at work but if I cough in public people look terrified.

The ‘behavioural nudge thing’ offers some ways of influencing behaviour, but not predicting it in this context at a population level with thousands of other factors at play.

What about China’s data that people are catching it twice and again and again!!

YoursTunbridgeWells · 13/03/2020 08:00

I am confused. Someone on another thread posted that someone on Radio 4 (sorry no real source) but a scientist said immunity wouldn't last long a few months tops.

SO what on earth is this herd immunity rubbish then?

If immunity from it is so short lived, people will be stuck in an endless reinfection cycle until a vaccine is found. Given that's 18 months off, a year at absolute best, then it follows that the death rate will be much higher because those that survive round 1 have to go through round 2 and so on.... ever diminishing numbers left.

Genuinely I think the only way of dealing with this is substantial world wide lockdowns. But as that's not possible, then we could see a statistically significant reduction in world population.

NewYearNewTwatName · 13/03/2020 08:00

idontlike789 yeah because if you don't personally go to a mass gathering, it's not like the others that do are not going to keep spreading it about everywhere else is it?

Lweji · 13/03/2020 08:02

herd immunity
Is when a critical number of the population is immune, due to catching it or a vaccine, which means that the disease doesn't spread (easily) because most contacts of an infected person are already immune. It also means that most contacts of a susceptible or vulnerable person don't catch it and don't pass it on.
The actual percentage necessary varies with how transmissible the disease is. It can be between 60-90 something %.

You cannot catch or get herd immunity!

Wehttam · 13/03/2020 08:02

Shhhhhhhh purple careful you’ll be flamed to a crisp for suggesting that! 🔥🔥 It’s all hearsay and rumours, shhhhh don’t dare suggest that this thing comes back!!!

(It does though, where it comes back or doesn’t really go away, its a mother fucker of a virus)

BigChocFrenzy · 13/03/2020 08:02

There are reportedly at least 2, probably many more variants of this virus

Would it be like flu, where resistance / immunity to one kind - in the case of flu via vaccine - doesn't stop you catching the others ?

SubjectMatterExpert · 13/03/2020 08:04

Many people, due to job type can’t stay home. But many many CAN

Easilyanxious · 13/03/2020 08:05

Anyone know what is considered a high temp reading different things ? And 111 site just says high temp with no figures

Sunshinegirl82 · 13/03/2020 08:05

I'd be fine with catching it. I'm in my mid thirties with no underlying health conditions. I'm confident I'd be fine.

As I see it it's people like me that need to get it.

There were a couple of cases where there was a negative test in the middle of two positives but not many and I believe they think it likely it was a testing issue rather than a lack of immunity. I don't think there is an "immunity test" yet but they are working on it.
