To think that the schools should close?

I'm interested to hear others opinions about this as I've been reading Twitter and the majority on their have valid points for shutting school because of the Coronavirus.

I tend to think that prevention is better than cure and I agree that this should happen in the near future.

What do you think?

I think action should have been taken much much sooner. We've been told to carry on as usual, travel, do what we want but only when we get in the state Italy is in will we start do do anything about it!

HaveeeeYouMetTed · 11/03/2020 23:21

What would children of NHS or emergency service staff do if schools were closed & they had nobody to help with child care?
General question. I'm on the fence at the moment.

Fatted · 11/03/2020 23:21

No.

crosspelican · 11/03/2020 23:22

It’ll probably happen after tomorrow’s Cobra meeting, or early next week.

flumposie · 11/03/2020 23:22

I can't see schools closing. Selfishly I'd be gutted for my year 11 and 13 classes . But time will tell.

FaFoutis · 11/03/2020 23:24

I was a no but have changed to yes. It's time now.

schafernaker · 11/03/2020 23:24

As a teacher I really hope they don’t- as someone who is 34 weeks pregnant and hoping to get through to 38.5 weeks I’m hoping they close a little later down the line 😂

I can’t imagine the chaos of lots of children not being in school will cause for parents/employers etc

ButNotToday · 11/03/2020 23:24

I think that every working parent will be entitled to sick pay, that is a good question though.

Sorry for the typos, I have had very little sleep.

OP posts:
blue25 · 11/03/2020 23:25

Do we really need another thread on this?

bemoreeverything · 11/03/2020 23:26

I doubt it. Bojo isn't even getting tested. If he doesn't care about his own risk it's unlikely he is going to give much of a fuck about the rest of us.

ButNotToday · 11/03/2020 23:27

Blue if you could point me in the direction of the other thread that is discussing closing schools I'll head over there. I didn't realise this had been done before.

OP posts:
TSSDNCOP · 11/03/2020 23:28

To death.

It has its own topic ffs.

In fact it should have its own internet.

WelcomeToShootingStars · 11/03/2020 23:29

Working parents aren't automatically entitled to sick pay though. If they're self isolating on the advice of 111 they can claim statutory sick pay, otherwise it's nothing unless your company happens to be more generous.

For those of us who can work from anywhere it's all good and well. But for those who can't, which includes most low income jobs, it would be an absolute nightmare.

Kinneddar · 11/03/2020 23:30

If only there was a section for all the Coronavirus threads that kept them out of Chat & AIBU. Oh wait.....

ButNotToday · 11/03/2020 23:33

Where is the thread then?

What is the point of being sarcastic and not pointing me in the direction. I had no idea there was a thread about this topic.

Get off your high horse.

OP posts:
Kinneddar · 11/03/2020 23:36

If you go to the Coronavirus (under Health) section there are several threads discussing school closures

ButNotToday · 11/03/2020 23:38

Thank you, I don't know how to delete a thread but I will head over there for a read.

OP posts:
Humina · 11/03/2020 23:41

Yes, I'd like them to close or at least for you to have the option to withdraw them for a period of time without penalty should you wish to as a parent.

Fatted · 11/03/2020 23:53

I am entitled to sick pay when I am sick. Not when my kids are ill!!! We have dependency days which are managers direction and designed for emergencies, the odd day etc. For something like this, I would be expected to use annual leave or take unpaid leave.

Parky04 · 11/03/2020 23:54

Schools should not be closed. West Berkshire has no reported cases of the virus. I repeat no cases!!

Humina · 11/03/2020 23:58

Yet, Parky04. And I bet there are, just currently undiagnosed.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 12/03/2020 00:00

No. Nononono. Also don't assume everyone works for a company that has a decent sick pay policy. I am entitled only to SSP, and it's just £94.25 a week, that doesn't even cover half my share of rent. I'd rather get the virus that have to live off that

Amanduh · 12/03/2020 00:03

Nope. It will make zero difference.

BeardedMum · 12/03/2020 00:06

Yes it’s time to close. Other countries are doing it why not the UK?

araiwa · 12/03/2020 00:46

Nope. It will make zero difference.
