To think that the schools should close?

I'm interested to hear others opinions about this as I've been reading Twitter and the majority on their have valid points for shutting school because of the Coronavirus.

I tend to think that prevention is better than cure and I agree that this should happen in the near future.

What do you think?

Sick pay is about £94 a week, can you pay your mortgage with that?

@Idroppthescrewinthetuna lots of companies have put in place national as well as international travel bans, though the national ones are voluntary. Companies are encouraging staff who can to work from home as public transport in London has been quieter this week.

Almist all other infected countries have closed them already!

I think it’s totally normal though to immediately think “what about me/my family/friends?” In these types of situations. It doesn’t mean I don’t care about anyone else. Of course I do.

What would children of NHS or emergency service staff do if schools were closed & they had nobody to help with child care?
General question. I'm on the fence at the moment.

They would be put in an impossible position. I know 'schools are not for childcare', but in reality they are. And it's not just the NHS. Utility workers keep the power supply going and provide clean water. The last thing we need now is problems there.

We would still expect Amazon to deliver the latest must haves, and food deliveries to continue. The same with essential shops.

Some lucky people are deck based and can easily work from home. Many can't. It is those that can't who put their on health at risk and will have to work bloody hard to get us all through this crisis.

Shutting secondary schools will cause less hassle. Something could be organised online or only the exam years need go in. Primary schools closing will have one hell on a knock on effect.

I thinkmit is ridiculous that we are not. I don't think they will though. I wonder how schools are going to enforce a 1 metre space between each person.
People are resisting the idea of closing due to childcare issues, I get that. I raised 3 kids by myself and school holidays are hard to find childcare as always.
However, adults in school will be at risk and then their families. What about them?
When you are in a situation in Italy where people are dying at home and their families are having to live with their bodies (as shown by the Gomorrah actor), please think about the bigger picture!!

Boris hasn’t got tested because he has shown no symptoms so it’s be a waste of time. It wouldn’t work which is why no one gets tested at the airports. Please look at the facts before spouting nonsense

Self employed parents are not entitled to sick pay.

MarieQueenofScots · 12/03/2020 07:18

Schools closures in isolation (pun not intended) will not make a massive difference.

School closures hand in hand with other measures would possibly go some way to slowing the spread.

cologne4711 · 12/03/2020 07:20

No I wouldn't. And this has been done to death on here already. I don't like being the thread police but it is annoying when the same question gets debated on about 10 different threads in the space of a week.

Websites have search functions.

They will close at some point, I just hope travel is also restricted by then, especially abroad to countries also affected, otherwise all schools closing and parents being forced to have time off will do for some of the "it's just flu" brigade will be to make the most of cheap holiday deals and flights. There needs to be arrangements though for those parents who can't afford not to work, and those in professions I'm guessing we want to keep being able to work, namely healthcare workers. I mean we are already overworked, underappreciated and morale is through the floor; why not add on to the list having to leave my child with who knows who whilst everyone else gets to stay safely at home.

It's not nonsense. He hasn't been tested. The reasons for that may well be that he has no symptoms, but it's an absolute fact that he hasn't been tested.

I used him as an example simply because we are not doing enough. There are so many people, on here, on social media, irl, who have been exposed but won't be tested, who have possible symptoms but won't be tested. That's what's keeping the U.K. figures down.

The budget yesterday together with the WHO statement set the possibility that it will happen sooner rather than later in action.
I think though it will be a stepped approach i.e. starting with gathering of over 1000 people like in France which would close a lot of secondary schools and stop a number of sporting fixtures/play behind closed doors (it's being reported that there is a relaxation on premier league televised matches)
