I've just discovered dd hasn't been washing her hands. Due to the fact the toilets are mixed sex she avoids them if at all possible. She's been using the hand sanitiser but I've explained this is only a stop gap until you can get to soap and water. At ds's parents evening last night there was no mention of anything, no signs to wash hands, no alcohol gel, the teacher licked her finger to separate papers. I'm getting angry now.

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 07:34

I am not pushing for school closures either necessarily. It is a tricky one. But there are far more minimal measures that could be taken and have not been.
There is no attempt to stop this virus spreading in the UK. All they are trying to do is spread people getting it. That is it. So more people will die, but the economy will be largely okay. So thats all right.

@redtoothbrush
I love that chart! Fantastic.

Statistically as individuals we're still pretty safe- more likely to get run over crossing the road, kind of thing.

Has anyone worked out those numbers yet? Is your average Joe more likely to die falling off a ladder?

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 07:35

If you have a child's party cancel it. Make it normal to cancel stuff like that. Please.

Spain warns elderly to keep away from grandchildren as COVID-19 cases soar

Fernando Simón, director of the Center for Health Coordination and Emergencies, said that while very few of those infected with the virus were children, “they are the ones that spread it through society.”

And

But in a country where only 4% of the population work from home, many working parents rely on grandparents to take care of their children.

According to a 2018 study, cited by AFP, one in four Spanish grandparents is in charge of the daily care of their grandchildren while parents work, including picking up children from school or preparing meals.

With the closure of schools and nurseries, this role of caregiver may lead to even longer days.

"At school, they said that family members should take care of children, especially grandparents. (The government) says that many people can telework from home, but in reality not many can do it," Emilio Salvador, a resident of 67 years in Madrid, who will have to take care of his grandson Jorge for two weeks

Will that stop eu going via UK???
We could have all europeans going via us great (head banging)

Horehound · 12/03/2020 07:36

@MarshaBradyo
I would like them to move to the next stage which brings about further measurements to reduce spread and lower peak yes but as we said yesterday, what MH was saying in his statement is that it has to be timed to work at the right moment... So there may not be a point in doing it yet

DirtyDancing · 12/03/2020 07:36

I am likening this all to screaming in a sound proofed room and no one can hear me. I strongly believe we are heading towards national crisis and there seems to be no sensible reaction or plan coming from the top.

Quartz2208 · 12/03/2020 07:37

Watersheep yes they should but they aren’t which is breathtakingly strange
Hopefully that is at a minimum what they announce today

picklemewalnuts · 12/03/2020 07:37

@horehound so I agree with your CV opinions. I think it's unkind to say people are 'at the bit for it'. I'd suggest you don't value judge other people's responses- But then I'd be value judging yours!

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2020 07:39

Problem is the longer we leave closures of schools the more risky it is for elderly carers to do so.

But if we don't close them then the spread of the virus will be faster and this is also dangerous to elderly.

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 07:39

@picklemewalnuts A 1% mortality rate at 80% getting it equates to a mortality toll of about 500,000 in UK. That is about how many people die in England and Wales every year from all causes.

British tourists told to leave Italy in new Foreign Office coronavirus travel advice

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 07:41

I am not an expert, but I have been reading and listening to what WHO says. They are the experts and our Government are not doing what they are advising.

Jerseygaly · 12/03/2020 07:42

Bercows
I know its annoyinh about the handwashing but that may be more sbout slowing this down than really prevention for individuals.
Being in close proximity like class is high risk anyway i would think. Others countries are saying 1m apart

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 07:43

Horehound I am on board with the school closure timing not convinced in large gathering / wfh delay as having as much reason.

What I noticed especially this morning is that we are starting to stick out like a sore thumb in terms of our response.

Horehound · 12/03/2020 07:44

@alloutoffucks well, you don't know that. The WHO might be saying it's best to take certain action at a certain time and maybe we just aren't at that stage yet.

MarshaBradyo · 12/03/2020 07:44

Which leads me to ask why do you think our response is so out of step?

We have just given out invitations for our young child’s birthday party at end of April. Willing to postpone if that is necessary (nearer the time). What are everyone’s thoughts? Are we being overly optimistic to hope this will go ahead?

Chocolateandgin24 · 12/03/2020 07:46

Not sure why everyone on this thread knows more than PHE who are guiding the government on this one.

Quartz2208 · 12/03/2020 07:46

Weirdly before this we were seen as the most prepared in a pandemic so I think we are sticking to our plan come what may

alloutoffucks · 12/03/2020 07:48

@Horehound WHO are clearly saying Governments are not doing enough. And we are doing less than virtually anyone. Even Trump is doing more.
We are doing a lot more than others in terms of the economy though. The Government has taken decisive action there. Because that is their priority.

nellodee · 12/03/2020 07:48

Chocolateandgin, maybe its because we are reading things from the WHO, the Lancet, and everywhere else that is in total opposition to what our own government is currently doing.

SubjectMatterExpert · 12/03/2020 07:48

Statistically as individuals we're still pretty safe- more likely to get run over crossing the road, kind of thing

@picklemewalnuts, but getting run over isn’t contagious. we aren’t heading towards a situation where thousands of people are going to get run over at the same time and some of them won’t receive treatment because there isn’t enough beds/equipment
