It's also quite interesting looking at the figures that came out of the cruise ship where it was possible to test the entire "population" on board.

Of those who tested positive for the virus 50% were asymptomatic.

fedup21 · 11/03/2020 22:21

Teachers have been told to prepare ‘home-learning packs’ for students during an expected MONTH-LONG coronavirus-enforced Easter break.

My school hasn’t been told this.

I’d like to see the actual letter/email.

MangePasTesOnglesVilain · 11/03/2020 22:22

Nellodee

I think you made the point yesterday that if they share their modelling widely it will affect their modelling, as people would react in response, and maybe to adverse outcomes.

It should be clear now that at risk persons should isolate and minimise contact, over 60’s primarily. Whatever the reason the Government is delaying this, it would be wise to be ahead of the curve.
Care homes and hospitals need special consideration, i feel these will be addressed in the emergency legislation being processed.
This virus will touch us all, surely the time is now to protect those most susceptible to complications.

Nearlyalmost50 · 11/03/2020 22:22

carrotcake how stressful for you. My own theory is that eventually the government will have to take action as front-line staff will start prioritizing their own families, their elderly, their children, and they will start going off sick to save them, and I won't blame them at all. If I were a 60 year old teacher with preexisting conditions, then staying in a school that isn't even being deep cleaned if they had a pupil with corona (and others not properly tested as they only test a very small circle), I may well go off sick. You have to do what you have to do and what you can live with but the idea that all our front-line staff are going to be able to carry on, when they themselves and their families are vulnerable is really mistaken and I don't think we have the type of draconian measures that would force them to work. Schools will close as teachers will start stopping teaching soon; pressure on the NHS will build from scared staff staying home.

@ofwarren That Mirror article reads like a load of rubbish to me, I'm afraid.

I'm a teacher and we have been told to prepare for school shut down as a possibility and we have been told how to set work at home and the school's policy on this- however, the article seems to contradict what Matt Hancock said in the commons today.

We certainly haven't been told to make specific "packs".

March 20th is also only a week before the Easter holidays.

I think they are taking individual school speculation and reporting it as fact.

Minesabecks · 11/03/2020 22:24

I've no idea if that's true or not, but remember it's a two week period for work, as two weeks are actually holidays and no learning pack will be prepared for that surely!

GalOopNorth · 11/03/2020 22:25

Yes I feel the government haven’t factored in how quickly schools become unmanageable when staff are unwell.

If the suggestions about viral load being a factor are true than school staff are likely to drop like flies. And schools will have to close anyway, but now most of the children are infected, and will be at home with their parents and possibly grandparents. What could possibly go wrong Hmm

Rocketmam · 11/03/2020 22:25

I told myself I would wait...but I am seriously considering deregistering the dc. Or telling them to fine me if they want.

I do not trust the government to do what is right at all now.

We can self isolate easily. The only way we would really get it is through the dc. Not sure how much longer I'm willing to risk it, with dh asthma how it is at the minute.

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 22:25

@fedup21
I've seen quite a few parents saying school has sent home a code for online learning or letters/emails saying what they are going to do if they close.
I'm on a home educators group on Facebook, for people who have taken their children out because of coronavirus.
I'm not saying it's true, just that some schools have been hinting at this.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned which may factor into the university/school issue, is that universities have just had a strike these past four weeks, in fact, they are out the whole of this week. So, there has been a natural reduction of lectures/students on campus this past month, even though not everyone is on strike. A lot of students just buggered off (rightly) and have been working remotely/online. This might have actually been in our favour as universities are hot-beds of international and close contact transmission of disease anyway. So, inadvertently, we may have had luck on our side with that.

ofwarren · 11/03/2020 22:26

Possibly @sansasnark
That rings true for what I've heard other parents saying has come home from their schools.

OP posts:
GalOopNorth · 11/03/2020 22:27

Sorry, I wrote that badly.

In a situation where the virus was being allowed to spread freely in schools, but then they had to close because of unwell staff, then students would be spreading it.

Nearlyalmost50 · 11/03/2020 22:27

My dd's grammar school sent home online codes for home learning about 10 days ago, they are extremely prepared!

Furfockssake · 11/03/2020 22:28

@SansaSnark DS school told us personally today that they were preparing e-learning, and would be carrying out a survey of all parents tomorrow of which children have access to computers/printers etc. They also said they are awaiting further direction from the Government about when school would close. It sounded more 'when' than 'if'

The #DailyTelegraph reports that Britain will move into the ‘delay’ phase of #coronavirus tomorrow.

GalOopNorth · 11/03/2020 22:30

That seems all wrong for the tome of Matt Hancock this evening RTB

I hope it is true.

Though maybe Delay is just more wash hands ......pray?

GalOopNorth · 11/03/2020 22:31

What was it, Deny, Dither, Panic, Run away?

Rocketmam · 11/03/2020 22:31

They did say that delay would look almost identical to contain.

So it will be doing fuck all then.

ClientQueen · 11/03/2020 22:31

I'm waiting to hear if my hospital appointment will go ahead. Nothing yet to say it won't but as it's on the 24th March I suspect things will have changed a lot by then. They usually text a few days beforehand so will see. I have enough injections to see me through if not
The other option is they just let me collect my meds but they usually won't prescribe without my consultant seeing me
I don't really want to venture to the hospital and much less to the Macmillan centre

AnyOldSpartabix · 11/03/2020 22:32

I’ve read the same. Easy to think it’s mild illness in the early stages, then if pneumonia develops, it cam go on a long time.

March 20th is also only a week before the Easter holidays.

Not here-we don’t break up till April 3rd.

SansaSnark · 11/03/2020 22:32

I agree that Matt Hancock's tone doesn't seem to be matching the reporting right now.

But maybe two deaths coming in one day and two ministers having to self-isolate has made the government take a bit more notice?
