Anyone else in Spain and finding the jump in numbers from yesterday to today shocking? www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/world/coronavirus-maps.html 700 to 1070 in one day.

Pedro doesn't 'suggest' not going out, he enforces it. UK aren't on lockdown at all, yet they think they are!

From what I see 20% of DC's are going to school on Monday!

Really good friends of mine and members of my family, are so blasé about it, it's incredible.

They talk as if UK is ultimately superior to the rest of the world and I've given up.

Anyway, back to us Grin

BirdandSparrow · 21/03/2020 21:56

Why do they think they are different? That's what I don't get? Is it just "it couldn't happen here"?

Does anyone have a link to PS speech?

PotsOfPebbles · 21/03/2020 23:21

Have you got movistar?

If you go on guide, go to Canal 24H, Informe Semanal at 9.30pm. If you click you should be able to play it.

PotsOfPebbles · 21/03/2020 23:24

Ah, a google gives me this as.com/deporteyvida/2020/03/21/videos/1584818806_272045.html

BirdandSparrow · 21/03/2020 23:25

I found it on YouTube, thanks. So much more statesman like than NJ. Although that's not hard, is it?

BirdandSparrow · 21/03/2020 23:32

BJ, not NJ

PotsOfPebbles · 21/03/2020 23:33

Yes. He was calm and reassuring, letting the country know that they are doing everything they can, giving massive credit to the health workers.

Friends in the UK have Bozo. I've watched him on BBC News the last few days. He's a joke, totally out of his depth.

I saw this posted a few days ago, it was just after the lockdown...

I'm proud to live in this country.

Staying at home here in Spain is not a request or a recommendation, it's just an order. And we're not locked up. We can go outside if really necessary.

Here we're not asked whether that's difficult or fun. Whether it gets us into trouble economically. There's trade. This to prevent (cross) contamination and in the interest of our health. Harsh sanctions if you go out on the street without a valid reason. Beaches, playgrounds and other places that can evoke a collective sense of conviviality are closed and cordoned off. Visiting each other? No way. With several people on the street. No way. With several people in one car? No way. If we move, we have to do it alone, unless one of the two needs something.

Is there resistance and opposition? Yeah. Yesterday before the sanctions were imposed the police had their hands full with (drunk) tourists who think they have rights because they're on holiday here. How about closing the beach? Why close bars? As of today fines from € 500 up to € 2000 or arrest.

I now live in a police state where the army is walking through the streets. No, I live in a country where, on the day the decree came out, the people stood en masse on the balconies and applauded loudly for all the medical staff risking their own lives and feverishly trying to save the lives of others. A country where today, from those same balconies, the national anthem sounds from speakers and telephones. A feeling of togetherness that does not require a European Championship or World Cup. This gives me goose bumps, instead of goose bumps and fear that is present in many people because they don't know where to go.

I wish you strength and wisdom in making a decision that serves the collective.

Greetings from Barcelona.

BirdandSparrow · 21/03/2020 23:40

That is brilliant. I have felt that lately. That I am proud to live here. Proud to put my shoulder to the grindstone.

meuca · 21/03/2020 23:51

HmmHmmHmm

This person clearly lives in a very different Barcelona from me!

BirdandSparrow · 21/03/2020 23:59

Not been the national anthem down here, seems to be clapping followed by mini disco of either sevillanas or Tusa.

Ciwirocks · 22/03/2020 00:06

Stumbled on this thread from the uk because I am curious to know what things are like in lockdown. It’s infuriating here for most people I know, bars and cafes are switching to take away ahead of government advice because individuals know it’s the best thing to do. All public places are closed now here but people still flock to parks and open spaces in their droves, lots of calls on social media to be responsible and stay home so there are definitely a lot of people who think we need to do more but still even more people making bad decisions. I want lockdown now and so do most people I know. My parents have kept themselves in for the last 2 weeks, they feel if the government are not going to protect them they need to protect themselves. We are heading the same way as all the other European countries and as a health care professional it frightens me. I hope you all stay safe and I also hope that we lock down totally in the next couple of days

Boring and frustrating, mostly. I go out to the supermarket every few days. We have to queue to get in (everyone standing 1m apart), but stocks are plentiful. The rest of the time I stay home.

A lot of people aren't taking it seriously. I think that's partly human nature - we tend to see ourselves as exceptional, so we all think that our individual circumstances are uniquely demanding. Partly it's a failure on the part of the national government. They refuse to confine the most affected cities and regions, despite people crying out for it. They have also not stopped people going to work, even in non-essential jobs, and public transport is still in use. I'm not sure how effective this partial lockdown will be; doctors from China's Red Crosa were criticising Italy this week for not implementing a strict enough lockdown. We appear to be in the same position.

I'm honestly intrigued by the positive reactions people on here have to Sánchez's speech; everyone in my social circles has been criticising him for saying nothing and not taking strong enough measures. It's taken 50 days since Spain's first confirmed case for the government to even set up a scientific committee to investigate the virus...

meuca · 22/03/2020 00:32

*Red Cross, that should be!

BirdandSparrow · 22/03/2020 00:39

I understand that. My compliments were mostly in regards to how well he comes across in comparison to BJ, but that's not hard!
I've seen a lot of posts on Sm today calling for Madrid to be locked down.
My DH works in a call centre and they're still at work. With social distancing now since about Wednesday but not WFH. They have said today to say those who can WFH may do so, but you have to provide your own laptop with windows 10. We don't have a computer Dh can use, so he can't. And I think that is shite. If they are going to get them to WFh, they need to provide the equipment.

He's gone to bed with a sore throat and is worried.

meuca · 22/03/2020 00:48

A friend of mine works in an office job that could easily have gone teletrabajo. The company refused to let them WFH though. My friend is now at home with a confirmed case of coronavirus since Wednesday. He lives alone (his mum has been dropping supplies off on the doorstep!) and is young, fit and otherwise healthy - and now incredibly worried about who he may have infected. Sad

Novia · 22/03/2020 07:34

@meuca - I think most of us think Spain is on the right track. Amongst my Spanish friends there are no complaints about over reaction, etc. Most actually want it stricter, especially clamping down on people chatting in the street when walking the dog, etc.

I've not left the house in over a week. DH is doing the shopping as he is spanish and I'm scared of being stopped by the police and unable to be clearly understood. We shop every 3-4 days and there is plenty of stock.

It's a big change as I would shop every day for bread before, and have a wander. I miss the mountain behind my house, and being able to grab a coffee with friends in the cafes in town.

Having the kids at home is tough for work, but I'm glad they are with me and safe. I think the uncertainty is worst, theoretically lock down finishes the week after next, but I can't see how that will happen. Certainly schools won't go back for the foreseeable future.

I miss my family in the UK and I'm disappointed we won't get back for our usual Easter week. I don't have any idea when we will actually be able to see them. It's going to be the longest we have all been apart.

And I also think the UK is crazy, BJ is a fucking idiot, and people seems to be conducting themselves like selfish morons. The sense of entitlement is breathtaking. The virus doesn't discriminate and the UK are going to get a tough lesson in weeks to come.

Novia · 22/03/2020 07:35

Sorry Meuca - my reply was intended for @ciwirocks x

Ciwirocks · 22/03/2020 07:57

I want a full lockdown now and most people I know do too. We are basically doing that ourselves but I am a healthcare professional so need to go to work. Since the schools have closed I have definitely seen a change in attitudes and people are largely staying home. Boris has given woolly advice at every stage ie allowing cafes and bars to stay open but just telling people not to go to them! I am not in London so I do hope that we have a chance here as we are following stricter measures at an earlier time than they have. It is estimated that London is a couple of weeks ahead of the rest of the UK in terms of the outbreak. I think it’s too far gone in London now, it’s frightening

Sanchez tells the presidents of the autonomous communities that the estado de alerta should be extended by 15 days. No surprises there.

Oh crap Mother's Day Shock

DS had an hour of playing Roblox with his cousin in Australia this morning! Great diversion, they had loads of fun. We're going to do that every Sunday morning, something for them to look forward to.

I have written up DS' schedule, he seems happy with it. I've written a list of all the DIY that needs doing (including building a desk, some important parts of which are still in the carboot! And there are 3 of us meeting workspace ), putting up shelves, putting up pictures. And I've put up my finalised timetable of online classes, so my menfolk can see when they have to leave me alone and stfu Grin

I'm feeling quite positive, totally avoiding British press, just hunkering down dealing with my own isolation.

Oh, and I've just swept, mopped and sanitized the whole stairwell of my 5-floor building (we have no lift) , so that's my exercise for the day!

Stay strong people Brew

Nameisthegame · 22/03/2020 12:27

If my sister wasn’t there (self isolating as she’s vulnerable) I wouldn’t bother with the uk at all I find it too frustrating! So grateful we have the internet/social media etc this could be so much harder!

It's confirmed that the lockdown has been extended. elpais.com/espana/2020-03-22/el-gobierno-decide-prorrogar-el-estado-de-alarma-15-dias.html

Today I've been to take MIL (88) some food. She doesn't really understand what she can and can't do, what's open, what's not. But she's managing OK I think.

I'm going to clean the bathroom today, already got 2 loads of washing out in the sun/clouds.

Have you seen the TV programming organised by the government and RTVE? www.rtve.es/rtve/20200320/rtve-aprendemos-casa/2010489.shtml Starts tomorrow. I've told the kids they're going to watch their hour every day. DD is in 3º so that's 10 am to 11 am, DS is 12 next week but in 6º so I assume he's 10-12 years, so at 11 am to 12 am. That's quite good. I'm going to build it into our timetable. It even includes PE apparently. I think it's amazing they've organised that in a week.

Really not feeling the urge to exercise, but I think I need to organise something somehow, even if it's just walking up and down the stairs.
