To ask when you think all schools will shut

Due to the corona virus.

Have been talking to a relative and am more worried than I was. Have three dc, one of whom gets ill at the drop of a hat.

Facts emerging from Italy are not great, so why aren’t we in complete shut down now? What is the government waiting for?

Austria, population 8.8 mln, has about 200 cases... so would be like 1500 cases in UK. Maybe that's only 7 days away. I guess we'll see.

BBC World service is talking (right now) about how Italy lockdown doesn't mean confined to home at all.

lljkk · 11/03/2020 21:17

help me out, where does one get the accurate today / last hour counts of cases?

Anyway, if it's 514 today, that's suggesting ~6000 cases in UK to be similar to Denmark conditions.

What's involved in the test, is it RTpcr or what? Why do the tests take so long to come back?

APheasantPluckersSon · 11/03/2020 21:20

The Danish figures have been increasing at an insane rate. You can follow here (in Danish, but scroll down a bit and you can see ‘514 danskere smittet’)

Greenpop21 · 11/03/2020 21:26

Yes Denmark had only a handful last week. We were due to visit so have been following it.
I just googled Denmark Covid 19.

Greenpop21 · 11/03/2020 21:28

I’m wondering if our figures are accurate. Why would our spread be so much slower?

lljkk · 11/03/2020 21:34

UK being an island so more controlled borders, also better surveillance.

Heck, maybe the Danish figures are too high -- who is to say that their tests aren't faulty & they haven't over-estimated case count? Coz frankly, if you're gonna question the numbers, may as well question both ways.

Greenpop21 · 11/03/2020 21:40

Hmm it does seem strange to me. Perhaps they’re testing everyone whereas here they’re only testing if you’ve been to certain places or know you’ve had contact with a case.

Greenpop21 · 11/03/2020 21:42

Everyone with flu symptoms I mean.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 11/03/2020 21:49

I’m a teacher too. We’re preparing work as well.

Idroppedthescrewinthetuna · 11/03/2020 21:55

www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

I have followed this since when it was just in china. I think the spread rate makes more sense when you look at the tables and the cases per million population column

Hoik · 11/03/2020 21:55

I’m wondering if our figures are accurate. Why would our spread be so much slower?

  • better tracking of cases and faster isolation
  • targeted testing so only the symptomatic cases are being picked up
  • probably lots of mild to moderate cases and asymptomatic cases flying under the radar
  • recent runs of bad weather and other bugs mean a lot of people haven't been far across the doorstep over the last few weeks

I think the second and third points are the two most likely explanations.

APheasantPluckersSon · 11/03/2020 21:56

I tried googling a bit about the testing in Denmark. It seems there are 6 hospitals with drive-through style testing and you get the results within a few hours so maybe everyone who rings the hotline and has the right symptoms is tested?

fedup21 · 11/03/2020 21:56

If parliament is closed because an MP has the virus, schools should be, too.

If the chair where that parliament member sat is just wiped over with a dirty rag and they continue, ‘business as normal’ then I guess that’s fine for schools, too.

Greenpop21 · 11/03/2020 21:58

Thanks for that information. A trip to Copenhagen is fast becoming unappealing.

wildcherries · 11/03/2020 21:59

Denmark has tested the same way as the UK does, up to this point. Not based on flu symptoms. For the nest two weeks, however, we are asked to stay at home if we're ill - even if it isn't confirmed coronavirus.

In addition to schools, all students and staff at other educational institutions are being sent home from Friday, along with most employees in the public sector - with pay. Libraries and after school clubs and activities are closed down. Private-sector employers are asked to look at their staff working from home or taking holiday. Gathering of more than 100 people indoors are banned. Tomorrow, the government are asking for more legislative powers to deal with the situation.

Greenpop21 · 11/03/2020 22:04

@wildcherries are you talking uk or Denmark?

wildcherries · 11/03/2020 22:10

Greenpop21 Denmark. Sorry. I've just listened to our PM's briefing from earlier this evening about school closures, etc. I thought I'd post as the UK might be going in the same direction, although I take the point that Denmark is a much smaller country.

Greenpop21 · 11/03/2020 22:11

Are your cases traced back to Italy or local spread ?

wildcherries · 11/03/2020 22:13

Both now. They just said that this evening too. Up to now, the info was that the cases mostly traced back to Italy and Austria.

Greenpop21 · 11/03/2020 22:17

Are they closing attractions like Tivoli? I know it’s due to open on 2/4.

Smurf123 · 11/03/2020 22:24

@Greenpop21 atm everything in Denmark is closing for 2 weeks.. So I would say it is a wait and see for things like tivoli. When are you due to go?
They had 34 cases on Monday to 519 today so a huge spread in a short period of time.. I have one very excited (Foster) niece who has just found out she is getting 2 weeks off school (a less so enthusiastic mil)

APheasantPluckersSon · 11/03/2020 22:26

So far, they’re still opening Tivoli on 2nd April but they write that they’re monitoring it carefully and following the government’s guidelines.

wildcherries · 11/03/2020 22:26

if you are considering a visit, I'd keep a close eye. PM said two weeks lockdown, for now. But it wouldn't surprise me if the period was extended, and the list of locations could be added to as well.

awishes · 11/03/2020 22:27

I don't think for a minute that UK government will close schools. The two who recently experienced a case didn't even close for a deep clean. We seem to be going the opposite way to other affected countries in regard to action. I think it will come back and bite us.
I'm fuming that all this money is being pumped in from today's budget to deal with the issue but actually all we are being told is to wash our hands effectively.

Starlight456 · 11/03/2020 22:28

My Ds was given art homework today to do next week if schools are closed.

We have no cases in our town so tbh don’t see the point
