To ask when you think all schools will shut

Due to the corona virus.

Have been talking to a relative and am more worried than I was. Have three dc, one of whom gets ill at the drop of a hat.

Facts emerging from Italy are not great, so why aren’t we in complete shut down now? What is the government waiting for?

On another thread some people were expecting schools to close from easter until September. Really?

Really Confused how long did you think it would take?
It's only because we are so selfish and more interested in money than life, that we aren't already closed.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 14/03/2020 12:28

Handbag, but currently we are being used as a human shield. The clown is taking action now against mass gatherings. Schools are mass gatherings of children who care nothing for hygiene.

They need to close for the health and safety of the staff

SoupDragon · 14/03/2020 12:34

The clown is taking action now against mass gatherings

This ease the strain on the emergency services. None of whom are involved in the "mass gathering" in schools.

motherrunner · 14/03/2020 12:39

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince I agree with all you have said. I’m a secondary school teacher and my anxiety is sky high at the moment. I’m worried about not being well for my children, making my children ill, making my husband ill.

I’m tired too of hearing ‘the teachers...’. I am not a role, I am a person and I deserve to be protected too.

Janemarpling · 14/03/2020 12:40

Agree Mother.

I have my aged parents at home too.

motherrunner · 14/03/2020 12:44

That must be a real worry for you @Janemarpling. My mum requires 24/7 care in a nursing home. Thursday they messaged to say they are in lockdown and all visitors have been banned for the foreseeable. One one hand that has saddened me, I’m fear she’ll be lonely, scared and I can’t be there. On the other hand at least I won’t pass on any germs.

Janemarpling · 14/03/2020 12:46

That must be so hard Mother. But you are right as long as she is safe and we hope it will get better

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 14/03/2020 13:03

I thought the mass gatherings were to minimise the risk of contact. Scotland has banned gatherings of more than 500 l think?

My school has over 2000 pupils and staff. Kids spread germs everywhere.

Sunshine1239 · 14/03/2020 13:23

The mass gathering isn’t proven to affect transmission
They’re only now considering banning events to ease pressure on emergency services

Janemarpling · 14/03/2020 13:36

The mass gathering isn’t proven to affect transmission

Can you show me the 'Science' of this!

Sunshine1239 · 14/03/2020 13:47

I don’t need to provide proof

The proof simply isn’t there that it does cause transmission which is why government haven’t cancelled so far. Not saying I agree with it but that’s the reasons they’ve now given for cancelling next week / to free up emergency services

noblegiraffe · 14/03/2020 14:03

The mass gathering isn’t proven to affect transmission

From the previous contact tracing that has been done? For a long time, the cases in this country were all found to be people who had been to affected regions or their close contacts?

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 14/03/2020 15:54

....aaaannnd that's us closed for 2 weeks in Egypt

noblegiraffe · 14/03/2020 15:56

You’ll have to keep us updated Purple - do you have a school holiday coming up that it’s being tacked onto? Two weeks seems quite short.

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 14/03/2020 15:59

Yeah - suspect we won't be going back any time soon.

Easter hols in 3 weeks, then it's Ramadan.

We've just had a closure for extreme weather & all been without power/internet/water, so at least we were able to practice distance learning by smart phone!

noblegiraffe · 14/03/2020 16:09

2020 has been amazing so far, hasn’t it?

Oblomov20 · 14/03/2020 16:19

Ds1 is due to do GCSE's.
Ds2 is due to do SAT's.

Both are hacked off that their schools aren't closing! Hmm

SamSeabornforPresident · 14/03/2020 16:58

The mass gatherings ban in Scotland is tied to use of the emergency services, so gigs and sporting events take up the time of ambulances etc.

Devlesko · 14/03/2020 18:41

well given the choice dd and friends have all voted to be in school on Monday, they are Y11.

I'm not sure what day students in other years will decide.
Most international are going when advised.
Some haven't been home since December, some are only very little and without their parents Sad
One went for a funeral and will be isolated after easter on return.
I think they'll close before Easter, but maybe Y11 in for coursework, not sure yet.

Whatsername177 · 14/03/2020 19:20

I'm recording my lessons for my Yr11's. I'll upload them to the google classroom (virtual classroom) then sit and use google chat during our lesson time. They can submit the work to me via the virtual classroom and I will mark it. My worry is how many of them log on and watch.

NCTDN · 14/03/2020 20:41

My concern is that if all children are expected to log on at home and there's more than one or house, can they all access a computer at the same time? Will home Internet cope?

neveradullmoment99 · 14/03/2020 20:43

Just read this.

NCTDN · 16/03/2020 06:50

If schools do close, are all children expected to self isolate? Is that what other countries are doing?

halcyondays · 16/03/2020 07:43

The flu spread more quickly after the Armistice celebrations during the 1918 pandemic. So “cancelling mass gatherings doesn’t stop the spread as much as you think” is a load of old crap imo.

The excuse not to close schools yet is also, doesn’t have as much effect as you think. But doing all the things together has a strong effect which is what the WHO advise and what nearly every other bloody country is doing except the UK.

tiedy · 16/03/2020 07:49

I think they'll close for the Easter break and stay closed.
