To ask when you think all schools will shut

Due to the corona virus.

Have been talking to a relative and am more worried than I was. Have three dc, one of whom gets ill at the drop of a hat.

Facts emerging from Italy are not great, so why aren’t we in complete shut down now? What is the government waiting for?

I know of 2 colleges and a big hospital who have it and have not being deep cleaned or shut. What is going on seriously?!

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 16:22

Easter is late this year anyway. Just bring it forward!!!

lilgreen · 11/03/2020 16:27

Apart from Nadine D there are also others in Westminster who have tested positive, just not made public.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 16:28

Of course. They need to stop hiding stuff as it will all come out in the wash and look worse for them in the long run.

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 16:30

Purple

I think it's let it spread for a peak at Easter, the gov said they expected 80% to get it, so they're the ones running the show.
Anybody expecting the government to act in their interest are greatly mistaken.
We need to make our own decisions on the info available, and not wait to be told what to do.

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 16:42

Well, officially a pandemic now, will this change anything?

I have had letter re smear test.

Went to go online to book and surgery isn't accepting online.

Rang up and said can I book due to current situation. Told right now they aren't taking any nurse appointments due to triage however could book for 4 weeks time. Receptionist was lovely and I said to check I was registered for texts/emails in case of cancellation.

Whole point of my long text was to point out I was surprised they'd not book for immediate but future they don't seem to be so concerned about?!

lilgreen · 11/03/2020 16:57

Smear tests go ahead as gp surgeries are not dealing with cv. Mine has big signs saying go away and call 111. I had my smear last week as normal.

PanicAndRun · 11/03/2020 17:00

Tbh I doubt schools will actually shut, but if they do it will be a week(two at most) attached to the Easter break (before or after).

Janemarpling · 11/03/2020 17:09

WHO chief Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the number of cases outside China had increased 13-fold over the past two weeks.
He said he was "deeply concerned" by "alarming levels of inaction" over the virus.

lilgreen · 11/03/2020 17:12

It’s really strange how the WHO are speaking in very strong terms but our government is very laid back. People are still flying all over and with Easter hols approaching this will increase just as Feb half term saw those cases brought in from Italy.

Teachers have been preparing online work for students. I think they may close

Michaelbaubles · 11/03/2020 18:28

This isn’t because teachers have inside knowledge though. It’s just because we’ve seen it happen in other countries. Many teachers have been given no indication of what will happen at all and have been told to carry on completely as normal.

noblegiraffe · 11/03/2020 18:29

Teachers have been preparing online work for students.

Some have. Some haven’t. Proof that no one has a bloody clue what will happen.

Whatsername177 · 11/03/2020 19:39

I'm a teacher. We haven't been given any information beyond 'wash your hands, self isolate if you have been to Wuhan or Italy and you are ill.' That's it.

MissEliza · 11/03/2020 19:57

Teachers in our school have been told to prepare work to be done at home not because they have any inside knowledge but planning ahead and being prepared is an essential part of being a teacher!

PurpleCrowbarWhereIsLangCleg · 11/03/2020 19:58

ME teacher here.

Colleague from Dubai has been unofficially told to expect no return to work this school year - teachers setting online work etc.

We aren't shut, & our Min of Ed person has been loudly saying we won't be.

Unofficially, we expect to keep on buggering on until Easter (unless an acknowledged spike in cases before then).

After which we are into Ramadan. My gut feeling is that's when we will close.

Flatwhite32 · 11/03/2020 19:59

I'm a teacher and we've had no information. beyond increased hand washing and hand gel etc.

millie101 · 11/03/2020 20:45

I’d put money on it being within the next week, now that it’s categorised as a Pandemic and lazy Boris has yet to figure out his as$ from his elbow.

millie101 · 11/03/2020 20:48

To be fair, teachers have kids too and families to look after so don’t expect them to be able to give lots of work online either. They are only human. As parents we’ll have to keep the educational lights burning too, all hands on deck etc. We’re all in it together, hope for the best.

lljkk · 11/03/2020 20:56

DH says (I haven't checked any of this) that Austria is closing schools except schools are actually staying open to be childcare (are you with me so far?)...

because govt don't want elderly people looking after grandchildren. So schools open for babysitting if you need childcare after all.

How IS that actually reducing risk? Asked DH.

lilgreen · 11/03/2020 21:08

Denmark has too and they have less cases than uk.

lljkk · 11/03/2020 21:12

Denmark has population of 5.6 miln (Google claims).
Compared to 66 mln in UK.
Denmark's situation of (I think?) cumulative 270 cases would be like having 3180 cumulative total cases in UK.
UK are well behind DK, still.

APheasantPluckersSon · 11/03/2020 21:12

Denmark have 514 cases
