To ask when you think all schools will shut

Due to the corona virus.

Have been talking to a relative and am more worried than I was. Have three dc, one of whom gets ill at the drop of a hat.

Facts emerging from Italy are not great, so why aren’t we in complete shut down now? What is the government waiting for?

its a deprived area, so quite a few free school meals and kids limited/ no accsess to technology for apps potentially

Yes this is being lost in the talk of school closures. The middle class and private school kids with their laptops and iPads will be able to study from home if remote lessons are offered but fuck the poor kids who don’t have one or rely on free school meals for a hot dinner.

middleager · 11/03/2020 11:43

Christ can’t people even joke now? I’ve been coughing and taking trains for weeks. I’ve been joking about it with my colleagues. There is no suggestion whatsoever I have Coronavirus, I’ve had a persistent cough for absolutely months. It’s po faced in the extreme to get all up in arms about someone making a joke about coughing on a train.

I don't think it's appropriate for a senior education official to post that on Twitter right now, no. (Sorry, not sure if my OP mentioned this was on Twitter)

53 year old diabetic just died of it teachers should be worried for themselves.

HelpFlattenTheCurve · 11/03/2020 12:03

Even without knowing the actual death rate, we know this thing can kill, and we also know that there are things every one of us can do in order to slow it down and make it kill fewer people by giving the healthcare system more time to cope.

PhoneTwattery · 11/03/2020 12:07

I work in a school. My guess is never...UNLESS there is a huge spike in confirmed cases.

notangelinajolie · 11/03/2020 12:12

There is no point in shutting down schools, public places etc until the general population take it seriously. It is clear from these boards that many people still think this is all some kind of media fuelled unnecessary mass panic. The moment to close schools will come but not until the shit really hits the fan.

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 13:07

What are the percentage of deaths from corona compared to flu?
I know it's not flu, but when you are dead, you can't be more dead.

Jerseygaly · 11/03/2020 13:11

It's not just the death rate but that 20% might need hospitalization

mac12 · 11/03/2020 13:22

@notangelinajolie
I know what you mean. But I think shutting schools and mass events would send the signal that this is something to take seriously. At the moment, the carry on as normal message compounds the general feeling that this is "just the flu" and Italy/China have somehow overreacted...If the govt took a lead and announced social distancing measures, how bloody quickly would many people change their behaviour and decide actually it's probably not a good idea to book a cruise right now? You'll always get a proportion that will be dumb or selfish but I think in the absence of govt measures it's a civic duty for the rest of us to try and behave responsibly, minimise social contacts where we can and help flatten the curve for the NHS.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 13:25

Current death rate across is 3.4%. Italy is going at 18% at the moment. 20% of patients need hospital care. Mostly older patients but Italy is finding one in 5 patients are 19-50.

Google it all.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 13:27

Normal flu for UK and US is 0.1%.

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 14:07

Jersey

No, I just meant death rate, as people scaremongering about death, not catching it.
As awful as it is and as much as I don't want to die from coronavirus, I also don't want to die from flu.
I'm not comparing the two apart from death figures.

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 14:08

These are the death figures as you can see it’s a lot more worse than normal flu.

NotGenerationAlpha · 11/03/2020 14:20

I don't know the exact statistics of Italian patients profile. But what @Purplewhitelie quoted isn't that far from the Chinese rate, except the death. Which is most likely because the rate of detection is lower in Italy. This junior doctor blog twitter.com/juniordrblog/status/1235127363341553667 has stats from China and it's similar to the ones I see in South China Morning Post (newspaper from Hong Kong). That is 20% needed hospital care (14% serious, 4% severe and 1% death). And that 8% are 20-29, 87% age 30-79. A lot of those in hospital are just middle age. We won't all die but we need breathing help to fight the pneumonia.

I really like this explanation of why this is needed

If it's all hysteria, why is WHO so serious about this.

NotGenerationAlpha · 11/03/2020 14:21

The only age group that seems unaffected by this are the under 20.

MarshaBradyo · 11/03/2020 14:22

Easter break

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 14:29

Yeh WHO and all viral experts, the chief medical officer and 3 countries with photos to prove are all wrong Hmm

Purplewhitelie · 11/03/2020 14:30

Worldometer that breaks down all the stats from different governments is also wrong Confused

tinytemper66 · 11/03/2020 14:42

Perhaps by the end of the week things maybe clearer as the govt is too busy with the Budget.

Mine finishes next week and then just in for GCSE's. They have study leave, which will be quite productive as won't want to go out and about.

oldwhyno · 11/03/2020 16:08

I suspect schools will close by the end of next week at the latest.

"Closed" will probably mean most children are required to stay at home unless a single parent, or both parents, are required to work in various necessary services. Schools will maintain a skeleton service on premise for those children, and others will be given work to do at home. For many schools that will be a huge headache as they're not used to setting homework.

No large gatherings etc and we'll see where we are at the end of the Easter hols.

Poppydaisies · 11/03/2020 16:13

I think schools should shut early for Easter, maybe end of next week.

pastthepointofnoreturn · 11/03/2020 16:14

I'm in the UAE. We've just been told our schools are closed until June.

noblegiraffe · 11/03/2020 16:15

June?! Bloody hell. Does that hit exams?
