Time to close the schools

PaddyF0dder · 08/03/2020 06:49

I can’t believe I’m saying this. I’m a dad to 3 very young boys. Our eldest is nearly 6 and is on the spectrum. Our twins are nearly 3. They’re hard work when they’re stuck in the house. I also work as a doctor in the NHS. Closing the schools would be a nightmare for us.

I think we need to do it, and do it early.

Watching how this virus is spreading, seeing how harmful it’s been in other countries, reading the stats on transmission, burned on healthcare etc... closing schools and nurseries really seems to be the most logical step.

The UK is at a turning point. We’re entering the stage of sustained transmission. We may already be too late. But we might still have time to enact draconian measures early as opposed to late. Closing school and nurseries. Limiting travel around the country. It seems inevitable that these things will happen, but doing it early might save the lives of the sick and vulnerable.

I honestly don’t know how my family will cope with it. We have absolutely no family support re childcare. We both work hard jobs in the NHS. I wish there was a better option. But the more I look at the facts of this outbreak, the more obvious it gets.

We need to reduce viral transmission. There are many ways, and all must be done. One such way is to close schools and nurseries. We need to do it now.

@SoupDragon some MNetters read the start and end of a thread so I was sharing the information. You can choose to ignore it or throw your sarcasm about a bit more as it is entertaining Grin

Spamming is against talk guidelines. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Devlesko · 11/03/2020 16:40

The retired medical staff are refusing, and I don't blame them.
Friend came for coffee yesterday and we know several who have refused.
Why should they put their own life in danger?

Piggywaspushed · 11/03/2020 16:46

My understanding all is that if schools shut they are shut : therefore, teachers will be working from home. Many with their own children at home with them. Telling teachers to go into an empty building to 'teach' creates yet another childcare problem for the nation, clearly.

Sunshine1239 · 11/03/2020 17:44

What’s the point in closing schools when large scale events are still taking place? The aintree grand national is still on despite Liverpool having 6 cases inc one in aintree

It’s all or nothing

Even if lockdown- people still have to work

Most work still expect their staff in during a lockdown

Davincitoad · 11/03/2020 17:48

To the person stating teachers get a ‘free Holiday’ -teachers are people. They have children and families too. We are not robots. We could get sick. Believe or not we actually give a sh*t about the kids results too! And we would be expected to work from home. So no it’s not a ‘free holiday’. How patronising. Some people’s posts sound like teachers are worthless so doesn’t matter if they catch the virus at work as they are ‘just teachers’

Piggywaspushed · 11/03/2020 17:56

Yes, but sunshine if a business closes (and there have been lots of cases already in the UK and abroad) either for a short or long time, the staff don't go in! That plainly makes no sense.

Sunshine1239 · 11/03/2020 17:59

Businesses won’t close

Nhs won’t

Most shops wont

Even in Italy bars and restaurants etc are still open so what’s the point?

Amongst all my friends all their work pls ea are expected ted to stay open in lockdown just as they did in italy

Sunshine1239 · 11/03/2020 18:01

In italy during the lockdown they classed work as a reason to cross borders so obviously most still open

So really all theyve restricted is the social side

noblegiraffe · 11/03/2020 18:01

More and more office workers are being told to work from home where possible, so expecting teachers to go into a school with no kids to do work they could do from home would be silly.

Evenquieterlife33 · 11/03/2020 18:01

BBC says WHO declared this a pandemic today.

tinytemper66 · 11/03/2020 18:10

If I am asked to go into school where it is closed I will. I would prefer it to working at home as all the IT equipment is there. Plus if I was asked to deep clean my room I would. In fact until recently I cleaned my desks in my room. Now the cleaners do it as part of a new routine.
If given the correct equipment I would also clean toilets if asked.

Piggywaspushed · 11/03/2020 18:11

Lots and lots of businesses have closed sunshine. especially those with a large number of people.

Piggywaspushed · 11/03/2020 18:12

And whom will you sue if you pick up an infection tiny??

Sunshine1239 · 11/03/2020 18:18

It must be regional piggy

I’m Liverpool and I don’t know of a single business that’s closed or even thinking about it

I actually don’t think many people are worrying!

Seventyone72seventy3 · 11/03/2020 18:18

Even in Italy bars and restaurants etc are still open so what’s the point?

But hardly anyone is going and if you do go you have to keep at least a metre, preferably two metres, from others.

Sunshine1239 · 11/03/2020 18:19

I’ve just watched tv and there markets in the street etc and all still on

People going to work etc

It’s not going to work! They’ve cancelled the Madrid marathon this month yet all the Madrid fans are over here tonight in Liverpool for the game! What’s the point 🤷‍♀️

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 11/03/2020 18:21

A teachers holiday😡we will be working.

And I’ve spent hours already preparing online work got pupils if we do close. Over and above what l normally do. Holiday😡😡😡

Evenquieterlife33 · 11/03/2020 18:24

Question at what point if your school remains open would you consider it too risky to keep sending your kids?

Sunshine1239 · 11/03/2020 18:24

I’m not sure you should have to do any planning given you’ll have your own children to find care for

Piggywaspushed · 11/03/2020 18:27

sunshine it's not regional ; it's just a bit buried. I can't remember any cases at the mo but a few were in London. Everyone sent home to deep clean etc for several days. No one expected workers to be getting under their feet!

tinytemper66 · 11/03/2020 18:30

Why would I sue?

Sunshine1239 · 11/03/2020 18:32

I just can’t get over Madrid

Half of the 1600 cases in Spain are in Madrid and 3000 fans arrived today 🙈

Piggywaspushed · 11/03/2020 18:35

It was obviously an ironic statement but deep cleaning should be done by specialised staff with specialised materials and protective gear. No teachers with some Marigolds and a cloth.
